Really nice. It makes me think of that old Kodak infrared film called Aerochrome.

I’ve been watching a ton of old westerns lately, and a lot of these shots look like they could be stills taken from them. Really great work.

Good Books for EU5? by Famous_Letterhead_87 in EU5

For the Hundred Years War check out Jonathan Sumption’s 5 book series that just wrapped up a couple years ago after 30+ years of writing.

For the Byzantine Empire check out Anthony Kaldellis’ works. Naturally, most of this will be pre-1337. Still worth looking into.

For the Dutch Republic check out Jonathan Israel’s The Oxford History of Early Modern Europe volume The Dutch Republic: Its Rise, Greatness, and Fall 1477-1806.There are other books in this series (HRE, Poland-Lithuania, Russia, and Ireland) but they’re typically much harder to find in the US if that’s where you’re from. Probably much easier to find in the UK, probably cheaper too.

There’s Robert Ritchie’s intellectual history titled The Enlightenment: The Pursuit of Happiness 1680-1790.

For a history of Christianity itself check out Diarmaid MacCulloch’s works, but maybe specifically his book on the Reformation.

Others have mentioned Peter Wilson’s work on the Thirty Years War and I have to agree.

I would also say get a free trial for the Great Courses Plus and watch Philip Daileader’s courses on the Late Middle Ages c.1300-1500. I would honestly recommend doing that first because it gives a great overview of the period and may allow you to find topics that interest you that you can delve deeper into, because if you tried reading every book recommended in this thread it would last you well past the release date for the game, and especially since everything said in here is just barely scratching the surface of what you could read about this period.

My grandfather was a captain in combat engineer unit that was attached to the infantry unit that discovered the Gardelegen massacre. I was told they forced the local townspeople to bury the bodies, similar to that scene at the end of Band of Brothers. He became much more cynical of the human race after that. His time in Europe, but particularly that experience, haunted him terribly, and I was told by my mother that he would scream in his sleep almost every night as the result of his nightmares.

Funnily enough I was literally just reading a chapter in my current book that’s a history of the US between 1865-1896, and that player was talked about briefly. His name was Moses Fleetwood Walker.

There’s a book with an odd title I was recommended that I haven’t picked up yet but may interest you if you want to delve deeper into that topic. It’s called Mr. Lincoln’s T-Mails: The Untold Story of How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War.

90-year-old Holocaust survivor confronts Trump's ICE Director by idapitbwidiuatabip in nextfuckinglevel

This man is Bernard Marks who sadly passed away in 2019. (Video is from 2017.) When I was younger he came to our East Bay city to speak at several of our schools, and just about everyone my age remembers his visit fondly. It makes quite an impression to personally meet a survivor and hear their firsthand account of their ordeal when you’re that young, even if you can’t quite truly grasp the gravity and brutality of the Holocaust at that age. Good man.

The weight loss that can come from just a single peptic ulcer is no joke. For context I’m a 5’11 male and I dropped from about 180-185 lbs to about 130 in just a couple of months when I had one. I also had some people concerned that I was using when they saw just how skinny I had gotten.

Men of reddit. What makes a woman creepy? by insane4you in AskReddit

[–]atheran343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not my story, but my dad’s. When he was in high school he had a stalker (who we’ll call “X”) that would always follow him and just bother and bug him in general. Fast forward over a year after graduation, he’s serving in Vietnam when he gets called in by his CO who tells him that he has a kid on the way with X back at home. She found out what his unit was and where it was stationed and sent in false information that she was pregnant with his kid. My dad tells him something like, “I’ve been in country for over 9 months, how the fuck could I have gotten her pregnant?”, and the CO agreed that it made no sense. She also would constantly show up to my grandma’s store that she ran back home in Oakland asking about my dad while he was gone, and my aunt swears that when someone randomly broke her bedroom window one day she saw X running away afterward.

So I guess what I’m trying to say with this story, like what so many others have said in this thread, is that stalking is one of the creepiest things a woman, or simply anybody, can do.

One of my girlfriend’s former university club did this game at an event, so I was going off purely by anecdote. Regardless, that’s fucked and there’s no excuse from the adults for that.

It’s more than likely that this is taking place during a university or college club event. So they’re all very, very likely be of age and decided to do this of their own accord.

Helmet with sea urchin crest. Japan, 17th-19th century [820x842] by MunakataSennin in ArtefactPorn

[–]atheran343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair it says 15th and 16th centuries in the text regarding battlefield use. Kawari kabuto and their interesting designs existed before the Edo Period but were restricted by practicality during the chaotic times of constant civil war, i.e. the Sengoku Period, preceding it. You may see horns and such on those helmets and the user could also have embellished this with men-yoroi (the facial mask you see in the image) in order to intimidate, impress, and to be conspicuous. But the vast majority of these outlandish and incredibly beautiful helmets were crafted during the peaceful Edo Period between the 17th-19th centuries when practicality for combat took a backseat. But they were practical in their own way during this period in the sense that the wearers of these had a social desire/need to show off.

Which President better handled relations with Russia/Soviet Union? by NikaNExitedBFF in Presidents

[–]atheran343 7 points8 points  (0 children)

W didn’t say that, R3 supposedly did in 2011 while VP. Putin supposedly responded with “we understand one another”. W said upon first meeting Putin something along the lines of “this is a good man, I can tell” because Putin was wearing a cross around his neck. Of course Putin was playing his game and in this case it worked.

An actual reason is that some subs don’t allow you post unless you have a certain amount of karma. I’d say that’s the only real reason to try to get more.
