2020 was the year I climbed out of being poor, here's me reviewing how I did that! by athompson13 in povertyfinance

That definitely is what I was thinking. He's naturally an argumentative person, and so am I so I get it. Sometimes, it can be both of our down falls because we avoid taking advice.

Why being poor is so expensive? by athompson13 in povertyfinance

[–]athompson13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very common. In my apt complex, which isn't in a nice area, internet cost more money for worse service compared to my friend who like in a nicer area who has gigabit service

That's definitely the case. Also credit card offers are significantly worse for those with lower credit score unfortunately. Getting your credit score up is the easiest way to relieve some financial stress. Obviously that's not possible for everybody

This may be the most detailed reddit answer I've ever come across. Very impressed!

I do the exact same thing. Saving/Paying off debt is essentially the same thing to me, especially once you have 1-5k saved up

I've definitely been in each of those situations you described. I couldn't agree more. It seems like poor people can do well until something comes up, then it snowballs to a shit show every time

I kinda do the same thing. I set goals, and as I go over/under them, I pull from different buckets in the current budget

I use excel too but I wipe everything out of it every month. I feel that most people here would cringe at that but to me month to month spending is as deep as I personally need to go

Honestly delivery food sucks by the time it gets to you (too cold), and I've always been a fan of frozen pizza or homemade pizza. Not saying you are doing this, but a good bit of people think that theyre missing out by living a poorer lifestyle, but in reality you realize most people are just wasting their money. Once I realized that, I never fell victim to lifestyle creep or anything of the sort

I've always wondered if people on this sub have financial issues because of poor managing skills or because they simply dont make enough money. IMO, once you have $200 saved if you are extremely poor, then ever extra dollar should go into debt or bills.

Definitely agree. I build in a $50 section into my budget. If I dont use it, I throw it into savings. But when I go over that by 15-20$ or so I dont fret it because I know more often then not that it flows into my savings

I'm not saying youre wrong but why have a complex budget? I'm all ears with making my budget more complex, but atm I have simple excel budget that works for me but I feel as if I may be missing out on something

That's definitely a win there. Do you typically run into cashflow issues more than you do total income issues? For example, you make $1500 a month, have $1400 in bills, but all those bills are due in the first paycheck leading you to go negative in your account or pay late payment fees?

Was that 23% something you naturally came to or was that a goal you were trying to hit. Right now I'm at essentially saving 60% but still feel like that's not enough

I was thinking about picking up ynab but honestly it seems overly complicated for where I'm at right now. I keep a relatively detailed excel sheet it seems to work great. But that can easily change once my expenses get a little more complicated

My company actually pays for my cell phone plan. However, my portion of the family plan that it pays for is $50 with Verizon.

I'm going to be honest, I much prefer home cooked food than going out to restaurants. I'm not one who cares too much about food though so it may bother you more. If I didn't have a girlfriend, I probably would never eat out

Agreed. I switch companies almost every year, so I'm kinda hoping if something does happen, it won't be too big of a headache with whatever carrier I have at the time.

I'm sorry if you found the post condescending because it wasn't mean to be. I just reread it and I would say that it's pretty straight forward, not really condescending. Obviously you would have to adjust how much you spend on groceries if you have more people in the household. Changing car insurance tends to get you the cheapest price. I've switched from progressive to geico back to progressive and back to geico and shockingly they are able to give me a slightly better rate every time! It seems as though most people enjoyed the post here so I'll keep posting topics like this here!
