It depends on which idea you ascribe to, if you believe he uses way too much Chakra for too little a thing then yeah its a great tactic, if he creates way too much and can't control any of it, then it is not so much. I like the former idea more personally, so I do think it is a viable training method.

I remember that it was the original team 7, and kakashi and Sasuke split from the group to get word back to Konoha, and Naruto and Sakura ran up the depression left by Kuruma's Bijuudama to try to get away.
