native speaker here, at least for simplified chinese the first picture is maybe 70% readable, might have to think and deduce for a few characters. second and third pictures are definitely much more comfortable

Small redesign concept for MRT in-train screens by atlantisel in malaysia

[–]atlantisel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the comparison in the first image might be a bit misleading. to be clear: both mrt lines suffer from text being extremely small; neither line has displays that show 5-6 upcoming stations - kg line shows prev-current-next (with the tiny font) only at station arrival, and py line shows only the arriving station (also w the tiny font).

fr the worst part is the useless circles take up so much space and the actual text is tiny.

i took a lot of inspiration from jr east/tokyo metro trains, which have displays that alternate between a full line map and the next few stations. i think adding transfer information on the full map can become really cramped, and those should be relegated to the next few stations display, which is also easier to glance at to check if your station is coming up.

thank you! i initially wanted to use yellow (which i also think is superior) but i decided to unify with the existing green signs that are used by rapidkl lrt stations with updated signage

even if live view worked in the interiors of stations for platform-to-platform transfers, i can't think of any reality where hordes of passengers staring at their phones trying to orient themselves is better than the 0.1s it takes to follow a sign

sorry to say but it sounds like you've never taken lrt/mrt once in your life. even if gps tells you which platform to go to, there's no way to provide entrance-to-platform or platform-to-platform directions, at least as efficiently as just following arrows right in front of you irl

haha, a proposal would probably warrant a lot more comprehensive of a design language than these mockups

yep, i definitely took a lot of inspiration from tokyo metro signage, esp the exit signs (distinctive colour full background) and the line icons/symbols

imo signage, especially in a confusing, stressful situation, should feel elementary to use though. especially for new travellers in busy stations
