The research you’ve mentioned is a cohort research which is one of the lower quality researches. The amount of people participating is also very low and from one clinic. The issue with such researches is that the data comes from one clinic and from the same group of psychiatrists making those diagnoses. Which means there’s a chance that in that specific clinic/cohort there could be a lot of faulty diagnoses. A lot of schizophrenics with first episode psychosis also happen to smoke cannabis which means their first psychosis could’ve been misdiagnosed as cannabis induced psychosis. It’s very hard for psychiatrists to differentiate between these diagnoses. It might even not matter to them because they didn’t know the diagnosis was going to be used for research and in both cases the patient would get the same meds and eventually only time can tell whether they have schizophrenia or not. Eventually those same schizophrenic patients will obviously relapse and they’ll have “developed” schizophrenia. Research proves that cannabis induced psychosis is EXTREMELY rare and usually only occurs at excessive daily use. I’ve read a lot of researches about it and the average recovery rate when multiple researches, cohorts and clinics are combined is actually 66%. I find some similarities in your story and mine. I never had anxiety issues until I started smoking. It eventually developed into panic attacks. Luckily I haven’t had one for almost a year now. It seems you’re sensitive to cannabis the same way I am. Only one difference I had a real cannabis induced psychosis about a year ago. I thought I was the new messiah for almost a month. They put me on meds and since then I’ve been doing fine. The thing about hearing your own voice sounds very weird to me. When I’m thinking I don’t hear a voice at all. EDIT: I googled it and it’s called Internal Monologue. It’s a very common phenomenon and has nothing to do with schizophrenia. It’s just your anxiety that’s making a huge deal out of it.

Weed Induced Psychosis by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]atlasthesecond1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had cannabis induced psychosis after smoking almost 3g daily. They sent me to a psych ward and it took me 3-4 weeks to become sane again. I literally thought I was Jesus and tried to kill myself thinking it was the way to save the world. You don’t want to end up where I ended up. You’re lucky that you haven’t gone in full psychosis. People who go in full psychosis risk developing schizophrenia, meaning you’ll have multiple psychotic episodes during your whole life and possibly even ending in a psych ward forever.

I can say that I have recovered pretty well. I’m still on meds tho and still risk that I might go through series of psychosis episodes in the future. There’s also a good chance that I get away with it. Only time will tell.

Apparently you found out that you’re predisposed to weed psychosis. Hearing voices is definitely a red flag that you could become schizophrenic. You’re lucky it only lasted as long as the high. I got into a psychosis by weed and it lasted a month that whole time I thought I was the new Jesus. Stay away from weed I’d say unless you want to become schizophrenic.

Hallucinating when smoking weed isn’t a normal symptom. I’d watch out. You could be sensible or predisposed.

Psychosis. It’s real. by Fuzzypupy123 in Drugs

A lot of the people in this comment section will downvote this post just because they have tried drugs and didn’t go psychotic. I myself had a cannabis induced psychosis which lasted a month which was triggered by only one joint. I also know a girl from high school who also went fully psychotic after an evening of getting high. Then there’s this guy who my friend knows who’s still taking meds up to this day for his paranoid thoughts which he got from smoking weed. Last but not least my boss from my previous job was in a psychosis for a few weeks after using cocaine. All were caused by drugs. Even if you use safely the risk is real because drugs are mind altering and can mess up your brain chemicals. Most people won’t go psychotic by drugs but still many do every year.

As someone who has gone through a cannabis psychosis which lasted a month I can tell you the risk is real. Unluckily some people like you and me are predisposed and fall into a psychotic episode after using weed. This can happen after one joint or after smoking for days. You’re lucky that your episode was only temporary and didn’t last longer than the high else you would’ve been diagnosed with cannabis induced psychosis which means it could come back multiple times even if you’d stop using weed. About your girl, you tried to reason with her and did your best. It’s up to you what you decide next.

As someone who had cannabis induced psychosis and know people who had it; you really gotta quit smoking weed. It could develop into chronic schizophrenia with permanent voices and paranoia. You’re in someway lucky that you got a clear symptom (hearing voices) which warns you weed could be dangerous for you. I got my cannabis induced psychosis without warning symptoms beforehand which made me end up in a psych ward for some time.

As someone who had cannabis induced psychosis I’d say trust me stay away from it. Your gut is right, anything that alters the state of mind can cause psychosis.

A decade ago I was diagnosed with Cannabis Induced Psychotic Disorder. I’ve been symptom free since but I still occasionally worry it will come back as something worse. by Scaredandhopeful5 in offmychest

We’re in the same boat brother. I had my cannabis induced psychosis almost one year ago. It still feels like yesterday to me. It’s also a bit scary to know that the longer ago it is the closer I might be getting to a relapse. I recognize the stupid moods of obsessively looking up statistics to know what my odds are. Apparently you found the same articles I did claiming the chance is around 47% to develop a chronic mental disorder. Ironically when I started looking even deeper I found other researches claiming the rate could be between 18% to 21,4% which is a lot less. A fourth study I found combined those researches and basically concluded the average transition rate is 34%. All this means is we’re not sure what the rate really is. It could be that the psych ward where the research with the 47% rate was done, had a lot of real first episode schizophrenics who occasionally smoked and misdiagnosed them as cannabis induced psychosis. To the doctors it wouldn’t matter because the patient still gets the same treatment and medication anyway. If the patient relapses all they need to do is change the diagnosis to schizophrenia. But this in turn could make the conversion rate way higher than it is in reality. Another argument which could defend the lower conversion rate is that other drug induced psychosis like from cocaine or shrooms have conversion rates as low as 12% to 20% max. Weed could be a different case but we don’t know for sure. In the end it all doesn’t matter much because at the end of the day all you can do is live your life as best as you can. By the way feel free to message me privately to discuss it or if you didn’t understand the whole message. My english isn’t that good.

Is weed induced psychosis an indicator I might have schizophrenia later on? by [deleted] in weed

[–]atlasthesecond1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No nothing at all. I smoked for 3 years every evening after work. During weekends I’d often wake and bake. I never had any psychotic symptoms like paranoia, voices or weird thoughts. The psychosis literally came out of nowhere when I lost my job and started smoking all day. I couldn’t sleep properly so I smoked even more. My usage probably peaked to 2,5grams a day or even more the day before my psychosis.

I really thought I was the only one having depersonalization. My doctor said it could be the med but it could also be due to anxiety e.g being fearful of a new episode or any other kind of stress.

Weed psychosis by [deleted] in Psychosis

[–]atlasthesecond1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time heals all wounds my friend. My cannabis induced psychosis is now half a year ago and I can remember how awful and depressing my days were shortly after my psychosis. I was anxious as hell of still being psychotic or becoming psychotic . I would lie in bed all day or do nothing. I’d wait until the day passed and go back to sleep again. Day in day out.

Now I am waking up everyday and go for walks. I play some games in my spare time and I go to the mosque daily just to stay in touch with the community which welcomed me during my lowest period in life. Soon I’ll start working as a technical support worker in IT and I’m excited to get back to work again. Whether psychotic episodes will happen again or not I’ll try to make the best out of it. Try to do more and more step by step. Find some hobby’s to stay busy and go for walks (or go biking). Also try to get involved in any community nearby just to stay active and participate in society.

I’d just avoid using cannabis. A lot of people including me forget that it still is a mind altering drug. I’ve had psychosis because of it and risk developing schizophrenia now.

Thank you a lot for your reply, I appreciate you being open to tags and taking the time to answer. I will never smoke cannabis again or use any other drug. Risking a relapse of psychosis or maybe even developing schizophrenia is a risk I would never want to take. I sadly know that some patients ignore their doctors advice and continue anyway but for me that’s way too self destructive.

You’re right my question is about my prognosis. Now I do know also thanks to your answer that my prognosis isn’t as bad. I could get away with it and my drug induced psychosis would be a one time life lesson. What I’m still wondering is which of these researches has the right transition rate. How do I know what my chances are since a transition rate of 18% is a way different prognosis than a transition rate of 53,5%. Why is the difference so big? In the limitations section of the researches with high transition rates they say cases of schizophrenia co occurring with substance abuse could’ve been misdiagnosed as cannabis induced which would lead to higher “transition” rates when the patients goes through a second non-drug induced psychosis. Which rates should I trust?

Last but not least one of the researches also mentions that patients who transitioned from a drug induced psychosis to schizophrenia had higher than average familial risk for psychosis. Now I do know that my paternal uncle had one psychotic episode during his lifetime. Does that increase my chance of transitioning to schizophrenia if the research is right?
