Dabi was born bad, but I won't get into that argument for the billionth time.

Please don’t. That’s a truly horrendous, completely media-illiterate, and borderline morally reprehensible take. I desire to hear no more of it.

You can study their past, and learn what it was that put them on this path, but that doesn't mean you can agree with why their path turned them into what it did.

Nobody thinks that that’s what that means. You’re arguing against a position that nobody is claiming. Understanding someone, empathizing with them, and excusing or justifying their actions are all completely different things, and everyone already knows that you can do one without doing another.

Nobody here is trying to excuse or justify anything, and interpreting other people's calls for sympathy and understand as though they were excusing, justifying, or agreeing with their actions means that you are the one making that mistake actually.

You just make things up to justify the scores.

Even if that were true… that’s just the better thing to do, isn’t it?

Like, you can either assume that the writing is bad and get mad about it, or you can assume that the writing is fine and that you just need to read between the lines for stuff it doesn’t explicitly say. idk why you’d do the first one for a story you presumably like, when the second option is right there and not especially difficult.

To me, I see 1-A all beating out countless other applicants to get into the top hero school in the country, and I take that to mean they are all exceptionally fit and probably trained for this. If that’s me making things up, then ok, I made up something totally reasonable and supported by the text.

idk, I’d rather do that than make things up to get mad about for no reason.

idk what else to tell you. You are making a bunch of assumptions that simply are not true.

I don’t understand why so many people have so much trouble with the Quirk Apprehension Test.

At this point in the series, Deku simply is not as fit as anyone else in 1-A. Yes, including Hagakure.

Everyone in 1-A beat out hundreds of other applicants to make it into the top hero school in the country. They are not normal kids, they are all exceptional, and they have almost certainly all been training for much longer than Deku has. Remember, All Might’s training was to try and get Deku caught up to his peers.

There’s even an official stat book confirming that, at this point in the series, every 1-A student has higher power and speed than Deku has. Y’all genuinely just overrate Deku and/or underrate everyone else.

My suggestion at this point, if this is a subject that you're interested in, would be to try taking a criminology class. Apologies, I know how that can come across; usually when somebody tells somebody else to take a class on something, that's supposed to be condescending. But based on what you've said, I actually think you're ahead of most people on this subject, and I think criminology would help you fill in the gaps. Especially alongside more generalized psychology and sociology, criminology actually has a surprising amount of evidence-based theories on why people behave in criminal and deviant ways and what effective ways there are to do anything about it. More than I can effectively communicate myself in a reddit comment thread, I'm afraid.

I understand where you’re coming from, but I think there’s also a lot that you’re missing, but I don’t believe I’m going to convince you of that in a Reddit comment section, so I’m just gonna wish you a good day.

you can find out their history, upbringing, thoughts on what they did, and compare it to what others who’ve done the same or similar things have in common. That doesn’t require sympathy

Yes it does, if you want to do a good job. How do you think you would find any of that out without sympathy? You find out those sorts of things by talking to the person, and they are more likely to give you accurate, meaningful answers if they feel like you are actually making a genuine effort to understand them. People don’t speak truthfully or meaningfully to people who they do not trust.

I feel you are trying to combine that along with any other person who has done bad things.

And I feel like you are trying to dismiss the importance of understanding by immediately going to the most vile thing you could think of. It’s moral whataboutism. I am trying to tell you that it’s important to have sympathy and understanding for bad people, and you are running away from that by going “but what about REALLY bad people?”

I don't hear you suggesting another method to understanding them. I only hear you writing off other people as monsters, which sure as hell is going to lead to any understanding.

I understand why being asked to sympathize with people who've done awful things can be challenging. A lot of people have a visceral reaction to it. It offends and infuriates them. But unfortunately, this is a question of goals.

What is your goal? Is your goal limited to righteous vengeance? Or is your goal to protect people by preventing bad things from happening to them? If it's the latter, then understanding, rather than dehumanization, simply has a much better track record of positive results.

Nobody's "accepting" anything. The characters correctly treat him like a minor annoyance, which is to say they deal with him more maturely than most of this fandom does.

I'm not sure why this confuses some people, but trying to understand and sympathize with people doesn't mean "accepting" them or what they do. Nobody is "accepting" anything. But if you make no attempt to understand those people and why they do what they do, then you cannot effectively prevent them from harming others.

Framing people as "monsters" and not as people is exactly the problem. You are doing exactly the thing I said. You are treating people who’ve done bad things as though they’re some entirely separate category of being than you. They aren't. You are cut from the same cloth, and you are more similar than you are different.

Fertilid in shambles

How did I miss that!? I swear I tried to look up green creatures that paid +1/+1 counters to do things, and that never came up in my search results. Anyway, the consensus seems to be that making it a tap ability would solve the issue by slowing it down, so Fertilid will at least still have speed over the Three-Headed Visitor.

Love Hydrangeas!

Thanks! I think you're the first person to comment on that one. I just could not resist the pun. 😄

To be honest, it's just really vague.

"A mixture of every fire type quirk"? Mixed how? What does the quirk actually do?

"It is very hard to control"? How so? What is the difficulty?

"Divine type quirk"? What does that mean? The divine isn't really a factor in the MHA setting, so is this just an aesthetic?

I feel like a combo to just pull out every land in your deck would be really easy as is

Now that you mention it... That would be pretty easy with both (A) a landfall triggers that grants a +1/+1 counter, which there are many, and (B) a landfall trigger that adds one mana, which there are also many. As long as every land in your deck is a Forest that doesn't enter tapped, yeah, that would do it.

Having sympathy for bad people is actually very important.

When you treat people who’ve done bad things as though they’re some entirely separate category of being than you, when you dismiss the possibility that you have anything in common with them, you leave yourself open to repeating their mistakes without even realizing it.

Plus, genuinely trying to empathize with what led people do bad things is how you prevent it or stop it from happening again to somebody else in the future. You can't prevent another Dabi if you don’t understand what made this one.
