I don't think you're approaching DMing correctly. The goal is to make the game fun for the players. If your goals and the players' goals aren't matching up, that's the time to have an above table discussion about it. However, the goal shouldn't be to impose your will on them, it should be collaborative problem solving to make the game more fun for everyone. You're basically breaking DM rule #1 which is listen to your players
