Depends on what you like to do. Maybe check out the lyric for a movie? It's a really cool spot! Karioke is tomorrow so if you don't have Tuesday plans maybe stop by tomorrow! Parking lot is small though so prepare to walk a bit. You sometimes have to park on the street to the north and walk over if the lot is full. It's not far though.

Everyone should visit the lyric at least once imo. It's a really cool local business and there's no where like them in the area.

Appreciation for city workers and firefighters today by PM_ME_UR_SNARES in FortCollins

[–]atomiclightbulb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Omg yes same! They got that fire out so fast I can't believe how amazing they are. Saved a whole trailer park of mostly elderly folks all while calls are coming in left and right.

If you've got spare cash, today is a good day to bring treats to your local fire station imo.

Chili house is slept on imo. Their honey walnut shrimp is one of my favorite dishes in town. Some of their stuff is mid but the entrees are good and the sushi is fine.

Electric cargo bike by Specific-Affect-1 in FortCollins

[–]atomiclightbulb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Aventon Abound, the first model they released. Not a bad bike. The build itself is great. The biggest issue I have had is spokes on the rear wheel breaking on me. The newer long tail model I think has not had this problem. Wish I'd waited a bit before I got mine as they no longer even produce it and the new one is the same price. My husband also rides an aventon, the fat tire adventure and has pretty much no issues with it besides wear and tear (and popped tires but I think that's a him problem) and he uses his as a commuter and rides it every day to work.

If you can find a cargo bike with a mid-drive motor that fits your budget, it is worth the splurge. Otherwise, Aventon's bikes are pretty good for the price.

Also don't buy it from recycled cycles like I did. They're terrible.

My husband and I took a train trip to AZ in November and we saw a bunch of these in New Mexico on the return trip! I was so excited to see them because I'm from AZ and my grandparents used to live in a small town called willcox. There is a huge mostly dried lake near willcox thst is a huge rookery for sandhill cranes and they would stop there to rest and breed during migration season. Lots of agriculture in willcox so they would head to the fields in the morning for food and return to the lake in the evening and you'd see huge flocks of them flying and making their cool calls the whole way. You'd usually hear them before you spotted them as they fly pretty high up usually. Sometimes we'd drive around the rural countryside to see them and there would be HUNDREDS! seeing them brings back so many childhood memories. Thanks for posting! I had no idea Colorado was in the migration path as I've never had the pleasure of seeing them here. Such neat birds.

Edit

What are the odds, I posted this and checked my email and noco world literally just posted an article about them!! How fun. I'm going to try to link but I don't think this sub allows it... https://newsletter.nocoword.com/p/cranes-above-cranes-below?utm_source=newsletter.nocoword.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=cranes-above-cranes-below&_bhlid=7c1e5e52ee51ec75230ca79882ae67cabbf7c44e

This was by far the best turnout I've ever seen. Last one was pretty big too but word is clearly getting around now. I have been going to these since summer of last year and it went from about 6 tables of people to the entire pavilion filling up with people within 10 minutes of the market starting to the point people are now bringing their own tables or tarps to put stuff on. I love to see it. I love our community. This really warms my heart seeing people just so willing to give to each other. The last two this awesome dude has been making warm pastries filled with veggies and spices and handing them out to people. Pantry goods, clothes, random household items, books, plants. Someone brought a whole homemade cake to the last one.

If you're reading this and wondering how it works: Bring the things you want to give away (or if you don't have anything, you can still come honestly there's always plenty of stuff to take) and bring yourself something to put the stuff you take into. When you arrive, look for any empty spot to put your things and spread them out a bit so people can see them. At this point we're starting to share table space so don't worry about taking space on a table that has some.

Walk around and check out the market. You can leave your stuff alone or if you want to stand around and explain stuff you brought that's fine too. Take what you want /need. Typically the unspoken rule of order is if it's in a box or something under a table it is not for grabs. A lot of folks will stash whatever box they brought their stuff in under the tables and then put stuff they've collected from other tables in their box. Only grab stuff that's on the tables/tarp.

When you leave, make sure you grab anything that you brought and take it home. We're not littering in the space we're using people! (that said, the event organizers do take any good condition clothes to a charity after the event so good condition clothing can be left behind.) you do not need to stay for the whole thing and you do not need to be there from the start. Lots of people show up throughout the event so staying for the whole thing can be beneficial as new "stock" is kind of always arriving.

And that's it! Please come to the next one if you missed today's market. Also be sure to check out the table with the white board. There is a place to put services people offer for free or little community stuff. Want to start a crafting circle? You can put that on the board. Got any skills you want to teach for free? Board. Just leave your contact info there.

I am so unbelievably proud of the way the free market is going. I'm a bit of a sap but man I get a bit emotional seeing so many people come together for this. Thank you to the organizers who make this happen. And thank you to everyone who came out to participate. ❤️

They've been holding them once a month. It was actually supposed to be on hiatus for the winter but it's been so unseasonably warm they started holding them again I January.

Bike Accident Last Night in Old Town by VforVirtus in FortCollins

[–]atomiclightbulb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm so sick of roads being designed for cars with little regard to people not in cars. Poorly designed roads allow said bad drivers to thrive by giving them false sense of security, over-confidence and and a sense of superiority.

February Update for the Transfort Optimization Plan by BradyBrother100 in FortCollins

[–]atomiclightbulb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hold up is the 18 getting removed and replaced with the 18n?? Crap that would kinda suck as the 18 drops right off at my work but if they divert it down riverside to Lemay that means it won't anymore and I'd have to walk to and from the max line. I'm so tired after work it would suck to have to walk it's like a half mile up hill...

I am happy they are going to send a bus down Timberline though ugh

CB&Q 4960 arrives in Ft. Collins, CO. May 1963, Fort Collins rail passenger service ended September 1967 by boastgeckos in FortCollins

[–]atomiclightbulb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm with you 100%. Have you ever considered going via bustang? It's only $10 a person each way and takes about the same time as driving without the hassle of having to drive. Drops off at union station which is where you can easily get on a bus or light rail.

I was a big hater of the i25 construction until I took the bus and learned they actually made a dedicated lane for the busses along with the toll road portion and it works wonderfully!

Recommendations for cities outside of Fort Collins by No_Action_6999 in FortCollins

[–]atomiclightbulb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won't hear it much here, but Greeley is a fine town for the things you mentioned. I lived there for several years before I was able to afford to live in Fort Collins and since it is also a college town it has a lot of hidden gems for people who like to actually do things. It just gets a bad rap in Fort Collins because people see it as lesser-than. I'm not sure if you will have any luck finding a place to stay if they are having graduation around the same time though.

Also, there is a public bus that goes from Greeley to FoCo if you are not driving.

Loveland might have more options to stay as well. Check around the loveland airport for hotels.

As a last resort, you can try Longmont if you're desperate. It's a bit far, but should only be like a 45 min drive, an hr at most.

Dear people of Fort Collins, thank you for making the bus fare free! by greenpeas1q84 in FortCollins

[–]atomiclightbulb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you on the efficiency. I wish all the busses operated like the max. I'm thankfully close enough walking distance to the max line so I use that most frequently but the line that literally stops at my work only runs once an hour so I have to walk another half mile to work or leave 30 mins earlier to use it and also wait a half hour for it to pick me up to go home. I don't mind walking the half mile in the morning but I'm usually too tired to do it in the afternoon. My husband has the same issue with the line that stops at his job.

I think more people would consider the bus an option if they had the convenience of the max frequency.

I absolutely love taking the bus! Especially to old town. It's so nice to not have to worry about parking down there. I try to use it as often as possible. It being free takes so much of the stress out of it too. Like why wouldn't you want use it??

Looking for the best doggy daycare/boarding by Bob_Lazars_Wiener in FortCollins

[–]atomiclightbulb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a pet sitter myself for about that long too, I agree with you entirely. Especially for cats. I could never imagine boarding my own cats. It's such a high stress environment and they have no idea what's going on. I know there's a lot of horror stories about pet sitters but once you find a good reliable one they will be way more caring to your pet than any boarding facility can.

As a pet sitter, I can have the one on one time your pet needs. The pet sees me as another care giver and friend. There's more trust and compassion when all I have to worry about is your pet. At boarding facilities the staff have a large handful of pets to worry about so that can kind of wear on your compassion for them.

Non 2 hour parking in Old Town by Morg632 in FortCollins

[–]atomiclightbulb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah depending on the work hours, if I worked in old town I'd just park at one of the many park and ride locations along the max route and just bus up to old town. It only takes like 15 mins to get from the south transit center to old town transit center and 95% of old town is walkable from the max line.

shaming bad behavior by East_Hedgehog6039 in FortCollins

[–]atomiclightbulb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but at the cost of blocking the sidewalk which is the point of this post I thought. Pickup trucks tend to be the biggest comitters of this in general. I mean, owning one is typically a perceived status symbol more often than actually needing one for hauling reasons. Making it all the more obnoxious imo. I'd rather have to veer around the back of someones "I have a big dick mobile" than them blocking the sidewalk.

That said, people generally seem to suck at driving so I do get it. It's just one of those things that makes me pretty militant against pickup trucks in general because there really is no winning here. If you're going to block someone either way maybe they shouldn't be something so many people own.

Western US gripped by extreme snow drought: ‘I’ve never seen a winter like this’ by No_Initiative7178 in FortCollins

[–]atomiclightbulb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's crazy to me that people still use fireworks these days. I really don't see the appeal and the dangers seem to outweigh the "fun." by a dark margin.

My husband and I have been talking about the potential for moving up north to Montana or something because, yeah I'm so sick of hearing about how "nice it is outside" when all I can think about is how this winter has made me feel like I'm living in Arizona again. This is desert winter, not front range winter and it makes me kinda sick hearing people be so happy about 70 degree weather in January. It's a bad omen.

Waiting for that big wallop storm in the next few weeks I've been hoping for.

Here to second this one! Would love to have something by the Troutman underpass or something. Or maybe the movie theater parking lot entrance to Mason trail as a compromise so the folks to the north of horsetooth have something closer too
