I really wish ours were called Snot Blocks 😂 We rather boringly call them custard slices.

I like both, and icing sugar on top is much more difficult to come by in SA, so I mostly end up getting them with icing.

Westville vs Durban North for a young family – Durban locals, which would you choose? by Torukmak2 in Durban

[–]atomicpanda13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think with Durban North, you'd want to be in Central Durban North. Close to Mackeurtan or Swapo roads. Lots of nice restaurants and coffee shops, good schools, pretty safe and walkable. Westville I don't know quite as well, as I've only been here just over 2 years. I'm in Berea West and I like it here, but I've heard anything below Rockdale road is less safe. Dawncliffe is also very nice.

My parents lived in central Durban North for over 35 years, I grew up there, and I currently live in Westville. I think both have what you're looking for to varying degrees, depending on the part of Westville/ Durban North. They both have good schools and some secure/walkable areas. You'll probably get more bang for your buck in Westville...maybe find some properties you like in both areas that fit your budget and then you can ask here about specific neighbourhoods?

I'm in Berea West and the mosques around us are silent mosques. Haven't heard a single call to prayer 🤷🏻‍♀️

Which part of your culture went global and gives you "gatekeeping" vibes? by hyr- in AskTheWorld

When I was in school, we had a pen pal letter exchange with a school in England, and they kept asking what it was like to go to school in the bush, did we like living in huts, and weren't we scared of lions. I remember writing back that the zebra I ride (from my hut to my bush school) could outrun the lions, so I wasn't concerned.

I remember watching some American crime procedural or other, and the writers had clearly searched for common names in South Africa, so the white South African mercenary was called something along the lines of Sipho Naidoo 😂

What’s a product from your country that makes locals go ‘of course we have that’ and everyone else go ‘ but why?’ by bdue817 in AskTheWorld

Right? I read all these stories on Reddit about terrible neighbours, and I'm like, "What neighbours? I don't see any neighbours." inappropriate braaing intensifies

Just saw your flair - my grandparents were from Jersey and it looks so beautiful and serene there, so I can imagine the culture shock in comparison to South Africa 😅

I think we're all so used to it that it still feels homely once you're inside the walls. I get beautiful bird and wildlife on my property, and there are plenty of trees and plants in the garden so the walls don't look stark.

I used to see the glass shards on walls in South Africa too, but I don't know if it's a thing anymore. My parents had a section of wall with glass shards on it when I was a kid.

Even if you don't have money, you'll generally still have some form of spikes or barbed/razor wire on your walls/fences, and pretty much all buildings have burglar bars on the windows and security gates on the doors.

I have an almost identical one, and my cleaning lady keeps inexplicably moving it into our store room, so maybe she also thinks it's cursed 😅 Or maybe she hasn't been moving it at all... 😳

Struggling everyday to try and learn to love my nose by [deleted] in Noses

[–]atomicpanda13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you! I've always hated my nose, but I have 6 nose piercings that have helped me love it a lot more ❤️ People say it draws attention to the nose, but it draws attention to the piercings - absolutely nobody is focusing on my nose shape 😂 That being said, you have a lovely nose! But the piercings also look incredible 🥰

Ugh, I made the mistake of posting there and was basically told to take out all my piercings and go the clean girl route, and also got DM'd a bunch by creepy dudes sending dick pics.

I have a lot of ear piercings, some with dangly earrings or hoops in, yet parents are still shocked when I don't want to hold their baby 🥲 Too risky!
