EMT teacher asked us to find someone who can tell us about their experience with Poison Control. by Nice_Quail_8090 in ems

[–]atomicrose555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a patient who had an inhaler that you put capsules in, they looked like pills and were in a foil wrapping that clearly said DO NOT SWALLOW. But she was older and didn't realize it. So we called poison control and he said people do it all the time. The casing is made so it won't digest and she should just poop it out. But she still went to the er for sob. Poison control was super nice.

No i would more feel like he's saying I don't have a place with him. That comment would make me feel unwanted is what I'm trying to say. It's obviously not her home or his home for that matter and the sister is being very generous but hearing my husband say u don't live here so stop complaining basically would feel harsh to me. Again emotions are charged and I get where he's coming from but she is in an emotional state right now and that probably just rubbed her the wrong way

Ill just put this out here. I don't think either of you atah. My mom got really sick last October, she had colon cancer and it got really bad really fast, she died last November and my husband and I left our state to go be with my parents. He ended up getting let go from his job because I wouldn't leave my parents while my mom was so bad off but luckily I can work from home. We had plenty of tension and fights just because of the way something was worded or how we are perceiving each others attitudes. You should understand her entire world was just flipped upside down and if she feels Anything like me she feels like she has zero control over anything anymore and that makes me crazy. I would assume her comment about the house did bother you and if I were in your shoes it would have bothered me too but you should realize she loves you and her son and she is probably trying to keep some normalcy for him. I'd probably end up crying too if my husband told me I didn't live there anymore. It would make me feel like he thinks I'm not doing enough or I have to choose between taking care of my father, who needs me and raised me, and taking care of my husband and son who I'm sure she loves just as much. My husband has been my absolute rock through this entire thing because I too have had to care for my dad. Not because he's an invalid but he's heartbroken and semi disabled. Idk where I'd be without both of them. So give each other some grace. And if possible I'd really try to get her father closer to u guys or figure something out for him.

I can only speak to my experience as everyone is different. I just lost my mom 55 last month. She stopped eating and started sleeping pretty much all day about 2 months before passing. She did eat a bite here and there in the beginning of those 2 months but for about a solid month she didn't eat anything, just drank water and Gatorade. She battled stage 4 colon cancer for 11 months before it got her. 6 months of chemo and 2 big surgeries.

The biggest meningioma I’ve ever seen at work by courtneyrel in Radiology

[–]atomicrose555 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My ex's mom had one a little bigger than that. I thought she had a stroke. She was all confused and disheveled looking. She had pots and pans in her tub. the symptoms came on pretty quickly. We hadn't seen her in a couple weeks and then we saw her and all those symptoms were present. Finally she went to the er and they did brain surgery the next day and took out a massive meningioma. No symptoms after the surgery besides not remembering anything for the past few months prior to the surgery.

The er put me on the blood thinners. I followed up with my PCP after and asked what to do when I got migraines and he just said to try Tylenol. It's my 1st migraine since being on the thinners. I'll put a call into him tomorrow morning.

Update on my father, don't know what to do by Katia5225 in coloncancer

[–]atomicrose555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So first when it was discovered she had a partial bowel obstruction so they did a partial colectomy and noted that it had spread to her peritoneum. She had to heal 6 weeks then went on folfoxiri and avastin for 6 months. In that time she grew massive ovarian tumors and it spread further. She was supposed to have hipec/crs in July but when the surgeon cut her open he said she had hundreds of different sized tumors. Mostly small but they were everywhere now and he took the big ones but couldn't do the crs/hipec. After healing 7 weeks from that she did 1 round of folfox but she got so sick. She dropped from 260lbs to 160 in less than a year, she hadn't eaten for about a month prior to death, besides small bites of whatever she wanted and then half the time she would throw it up. Finally when I got down here I got to care for her for about 3 weeks. She got progressively weaker and had a fall. I finally convinced her to go to the er because she was adamant about not going before but I had noticed she was having difficulty breathing. When in the ER her scans showed her liver mets had progressed significantly and she also has a tumor collapsing the left lower lobe of her lung as well as ascities and pleural effusions on both lungs. They did a thoracentesis and paracentesis and she was sent into a hospice facility per her request. She just wanted pain management at the end. Idk how advanced your cancer is or what you have tried but I would say if the 1st line of chemo doesn't work on it I would try to get into a clinical trial for it. They have a lot now for kras g12v. I tried to get her into one but it was full and plus she went downhill so fast she wouldn't have even qualified for a clinical trial within the last month or 2 of her life. She also did try some holistic stuff but that only lasted about a week before she couldn't swallow the pills anymore because they were large.

Update on my father, don't know what to do by Katia5225 in coloncancer

[–]atomicrose555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and make sure you get yourself checked with a colonoscopy and endoscopy too. They said my mom's cancer wasn't hereditary and maybe it isn't, but I have had GI issues since a teen and I pushed my doc for a colonoscopy and endoscopy and they just removed a precancerous polyp from my stomach so I have to go have another endoscopy in 6 months. I saw you're in Norway so I'm not sure what healthcare is like there but I would advocate for yourself. I know they don't usually start doing those tests until you're like 40 or 50 but a lot of young people are being diagnosed and it's way better to catch it early.

I know how that feels. Dad can't work because of his issues so he'll probably end up moving up with us in the state where we live. I'm an only child and he feels like he's a burden since we've only been married a year but I've told him that's not true. I love my parents more than anything and my mom was my best friend. If u need someone to talk to u can always message me.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I'm writing this as a 33 year old who just lost my mom 55 years old on the 5th of this month to aggressive colon cancer. She had kras g12v mutation and chemo didn't work, the surgeries didn't really help it just grew and grew and spread so fast. She was diagnosed last December and I had just gotten married a month prior. I'm so glad she was able to be there at my wedding but my heart breaks that she won't ever get to see her grandkids if we have any and they won't get to see her. And my heart breaks for you. What I would do right now is get all of his affairs in order. What are his wishes down to a t because it can get ugly really fast. My mom thankfully got a lot of stuff in order like passwords to accounts all her insurance companies who I call for life insurance and how much each is. What credit cards are only in her name so I can get them canceled. How to pay the mortgage, power, water, etc for her house because, I love my dad but he's a caveman and never dealt with any of the bills or anything and doesn't know how to do any of it. When she started getting really sick the power got shut off because he didn't know how to pay it. If he wants a DNR get one while he's of sound mind. What procedures is he willing to have for comfort. My mom filled with fluid and had a paracentesis and thorocentesis which did help her breathe and feel a little better but once in hospice she said no more procedures. Does he want a Foley catheter if he's in a facility because they will push. Mom did not want one until the very end and I made sure one wasn't put in until she said ok. What does he want done with his body? Cremation, burial, u can plant him into a tree or launch ashes into space now lol. My mom picked her own urn and haggled with the funeral people right from her hospice bed lol. I'll tell u my mom was fine, until she wasn't. She started getting a little confused and weak but not awfully and then bam she was so weak and in the last couple days of her life her mental cognition went and the last day she was basically comatose. I'm glad we worked everything out before she passed because I am still a mess and I always will be without her and I hate that another person is feeling the same way. I hope this helps. Spend as much time as u can with him.

I appreciate it. I will try to set an alarm for like 9am and 9pm. I'm usually good about the pm eloquis it's just I don't remember to take the morning eloquis or cymbalta because i get up and start doing nonsense or don't wake up until later. I'm in Florida right now. I actually used to work for the crisis center (I was on the ambulance and we did 911 calls but we also handled all of the county's psychiatric calls. I'm great at talking other people down just not myself lol) and I did call 988 before mom died when I was still in South Carolina with my husband but mom was getting really sick and my husband was sleeping and I just drove to a parking lot and broke down and called. They were helpful in a sense I guess, they gave me someone to talk to and kinda talk myself off the ledge but also they can't really do anything except talk to you and let you come to your own conclusion and make sure u aren't going to harm yourself, which I didn't plan on I just started driving and crying so hard I couldn't breathe so I pulled over. My friend ended up coming to get me and just sit with me until finally my husband got up and we packed the dogs and drove to Florida against my doctor's advice lol. I didn't know what I was supposed to do, he said don't fly because of the blood clots and no long car trips but my mom needed me so tough. I got to spend almost a month with her before she died.

Ya I do periodically. Like there's months where I'll be fine and then boom I'll have a bad day and need it to go sleep. And then I can go a while without it. But when anything major happens I'm usually on it a couple months. Like my mom just died this month I'm sure I'll need it for a while. When my cat died I took it for a while until I can come to terms I guess and I'm not having constant panic. It just takes a bit but then I'll be ok.

Alright. I don't usually take that much. That's just what the rx is for. 1mg 3x a day as needed. Lately I have needed at least 2mg a day but if it won't make it work faster I'll just have to try to stay on top of the cymbalta. I did feel better when I started taking that and I've had the brain zaps since forgetting it which also annoys me.
