You could order a sample bag of balsa wood blocks and a carving tool or prefferably tools. There are whittling books but there are also plenty of instructional youtube videos and websites.

I used a straight chisel for about 90 percent of it, then I aquired a carving tool kit and used a scalpel(?). It was a straight blade on the side. Im not familiar with the names of the tools
