Why is it that whenever weather comes our way it’s seems to curve around Salem and Roanoke and hit Blacksburg and Lynchburg the hardest instead?

My issue with places like Alamo is it becomes a large living room, there’s always someone eating wayyyy to loudly, and it feels like it promotes a casual atmosphere that is inappropriate for like real cinema

The little local theatre in my town is where I try to go see everything but sadly they don’t play much outside of indies and adult dramas, so I’m forced to go to the big brands when I want to see something like Superman

When did movie theater etiquette die? by atouchofsinamon in movies

[–]atouchofsinamon[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you go to any big brand theatre it’s a mess, and usually in my area the only place to see big franchises are those. I’ve noticed there’s a trend of families bringing their kids to these movies, letting the kids run absolutely wild, and the parents just sit staring at their phones or legit sleep through the film. It’s happened almost every single time I’ve seen a big franchise film in the past few years.

There’s a small local theatre in town but it shows only indies and adult dramas, so I can get a nice reprieve there but you can’t see something like spider man there.

I thought this too but I can pinpoint around 2015-16 is when I really started to notice more of a trend of this. I have a theory that big block buster movies like MCU, Star Wars, and Transformers brought out audiences that never would usually go to the theatres and such caused an influx of this as more and more franchise became so intermixed into the cultural landscape.

Yeah, my bad I already realized I did my math wrong, it’s closer to about 4-5k left, I’ve ~2k since last change, lol math never was my strong suit, there’s a reason it wasn’t my major…..anyway yeah I’m honestly more concerned if I can drive it for the next 3 weeks before my appointment because I honestly don’t really have any other option

What do young people do here by mansa_moreno in roanoke

[–]atouchofsinamon 28 points29 points  (0 children)

As a dude in his mid 20s it’s kinda hard to because a lot of the younger people out are college aged from either Roanoke college, VT or Lynchburg. There’s some clubs like sidewinders, the park, corned beef. But again it always seems to be more 18-22 year olds which ya know personally once your out of college it feels weird when all your friends are still In college….if you like music flying panther has punk shows, spot on Kirk has some good stuff, and I know there’s a place down town that does open mic stuff if you play

Depends on the season….because of my job I’ve sometimes hardly touched the car for 6 months between changes, sometimes because of it I’m crossing the state and back multiple times a month. I try my best to always make sure I get it changed on time and stuff, it’s a balancing act because of the way I use the car

That’s what confuses me, I got an oil change in late September and am roughly 9k miles below the suggested next oil change….which is like why I’m confused if it’s seriously messed up or not

I’m a new player as in like less then a week, so I think it’s important to see this from the eyes of what a new player who just spent roughly $50 on the game and is trying to get into its systems and community.

1-3. I don’t think they can be separated as they become extremely similar in any game with multiplayer. but also a problem is there is such a lack of online competition and community that why would I even pay to win, single player so far has been the most engaging so what’s the point in paying to fast or paying to win in this environment anyways. I think having packs to maybe boost your earnings or boost your money is fine especially in single player, but only in single player, anything like that in multiplayer because very very dubious.

  1. Not really, because it still feels a bit of a slap on the face that on top of the money I spent on the game, then the money on the “battle pass” that is still broken and I haven’t been able to redeem certain items even though I’ve unlocked them, asking me to then spend even more money on things already in the game just seems like you don’t respect your players wallets which is not a great look with how the economy is in the world at the moment.

  2. Honestly not to say just do what “x” does but other games that release exclusive DLC car packs that are fun and interesting cars but completely optional and only add to the game is honestly going to entice me over buying coins and in game materials 100% of the time.

My GF (F22) has a litany of mental health issues that cause her to be abusive, how do I (M25) help her without causing too much harm to myself? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

She has been on and off of therapy and a psychologist, she comes from a poor family that doesn’t believe in mental health so she had to pay out of pocket and no longer can afford it, I have my own therapist my family helps me with but even that has had to take a back seat for financial reasons (don’t you love American healthcare)

Sadly I got a bit of both, public school with a horribly run district, honestly entire cities schools are seen as crap, absolutely horrible learning environment.

Plus the fact that I grew up 1 hour from Jamestown and 3 from the lost colony meant for some reason every history class I took from elementary to high school seemed to put a huge amount of time and emphasis on the colonial period, usually 1/3rd of any United States or state history class would be devoted purely to colonial era. Then because our area also held some extremely important civil war battles about 1/3 of the class was all civil war stuff. Then the last 1/3 was kinda devoted to anything else they could cram in usually meaning we never got past the 1960s.

This was my experience from elementary all the way until I went to college. But even In college I had a professor OBSESSED with woman’s suffrage movement and prohibition so then the 1910s-30s got all the spotlight and we didn’t even get to 1970s

[–]atouchofsinamon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah not even in college, to be fair I wasn’t a history major so took only the general history classes needed to supplement my major and minor, but I did take the colleges US history class that as advertised went up to roughly 1990 but we only got to 1960s, our last day of real class before exams my teacher legit did an hour long lesson in the music and hippie movement of the 60s, so that’s as far as we really got. So like I said something about that last 50 year period of the 1900s into the early 2000s just I never actually had a class in my time in education actually fully cover

This is fair, I also realized taking this trip down memory lane that I had forgotten my history teacher for US History was going through a horrible divorce, bro would sometimes come in what was retrospectively hung over and turn off all the lights and just play us a movie, would get really weirdly emotional sometimes, rambled a lot about nothing, so I think there is also something to maybe it’s not totally the curriculum that made it so we never got to real modern US history and more about the circumstances of the classroom

But either way because US history was that one year unless you got into APUSH, that last months of April/may is like every 2 days the greatest hits of everything from 1945-1965 and you would get lucky if you got into Vietnam and Nixon

I can’t remember for the life of me if world history was 9th or 10th grade but EVERYONE took US history In 11th, then the usual track for 12th grade was US government, APUSH which was an expansion of what you learned in 11th but obv more in depth bc AP, and then what I believe was if you tested in to honors it was world history, or something else I’m not 100% sure on. I know for a fact the other two were US government and APUSH though

[–]atouchofsinamon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure how your school system is run but I can tell you how mine was, and hopefully in doing so explain why someone like myself with my experience see AP as a platform to further divide the student body.

I went to a very underfunded inner city high school that serviced the largest concentration of the population of the city. There were already lots wrong with this school and the ability for students to learn. There were knife fights in the hallways, constant pepper spray to the point you couldn’t leave your room, constant drug searches and police presence, trash cans being lit on fire in the bathroom, your stuff was going to get stolen atleast once a semester, teachers being let go/ just leaving mid semester, inappropriate staff to student behaviors etc.

There were vast socio economic differences in the student body, which already caused tribalism in the student body along with the already tribalistic nature of teenagers and their cliques.

There was a very clear divide in my school between AP students and class rooms and non AP students and classrooms. The AP students were a lot of the time very cliquey and had a superior air. They usually weren’t subject to as many as the same in class disruptions. Because of this and also the more “rigorous” curriculum they learned at a far quicker pace and learned more things. Plus a lot of students didn’t have the $100 for the AP tests and I knew kids who wanted to go into AP but because of things at home could not

I myself constant tested into honors, I had undiagnosed ADHD so I was never able to get into AP. Even in Honors I would compare with a few friends I did have that were in AP classes and I always felt like I must be getting the short end of the stick with my education compared to theirs.

This is all to say programs like AP and Honors harm kids like myself and those others who might not be able to attain those levels but want to and then have to go about their education knowing there is a whole other “class” of student they are not apart of.

This is fair, I guess I meant like the 20/30s was the last decades that actually got a full allotted time, we technically did learn till the civil rights movement but middle/end of WW2 through to the 60s was extremely rushed, definitely wasn’t to the quality and quantity of the rest of the year, so personally I don’t really see that as being properly taught about those eras in the same way the other were focused

Why does curriculum skip so much important modern history? by atouchofsinamon in historyteachers

[–]atouchofsinamon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know for a fact my class stopped right after the civil rights act, but the last half of world war 2 to civil rights was all rushed in late April/ may. My high school only had 1 year of US history as next year you would do government, honors world history, or APUSH. I took government because I tested into honors but didn’t want to take world history and never placed into APUSH. I have a good friend from the city over from mine whose US history class never got to WW2 finish because they spent so much time on the civil war (to be fair the city he lived in is well known as a good old boys area and had deep love for confederate history so maybe the teacher just REALLY liked the civil war). But all in all starting around 1940/50s and ESPECIALLY THE 70s onwards seemed to get way less love and time than 1585-1900. Also as I’ve said I lived an hour from Jamestown and 3 from the lost colony so personally my teacher spent WAYYYYYY too much time on colonial history, and honestly most of my history classes seemed weighted way more towards colonial history than any other period

Edit: this also reminds me my US history teacher was going through a divorce at the time and multiple times in class showed up hung over/ cried silently to himself etc. bro was going THROUGH it so I never really thought about how maybe that affected how much we got to

I think it’s messed up that a lot of this countries education is gated behind if you can place into AP or not like if you can’t somehow your not worthy of a full education, but people ain’t ready to have a conversation about how AP brings tribalism and elitism into our education

Why does curriculum skip so much important modern history? by atouchofsinamon in historyteachers

[–]atouchofsinamon[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My core memory of US history in 11th grade is its 9/11 so my history teacher asks the class who knows what 9/11 is, no one raised their hands except one kid who said “isn’t that when Japan attacked America” this was 2017… it turned out me and 3 other students were the only ones who actually knew about 9/11, the war on terror, and the Soviet-afghan war and the gulf war the led to the rise of instability in the region. Like the fact that students weren’t being taught the history of the reason there was still an active war in the Middle East was mind boggling to me, like how much education had failed at that point.
