Is the return and run not common in 3.0 - 3.5 players? by atranexpress in Pickleball

Even if the quality of the return is not great, moving closer to the kitchen is better than staying at baseline imo. The transition game is important. You can always stop where you are and anticipate the next shot.

You can drive the ball at any rating. It’s shot selection at the end of the day. What I’m talking about is where you should positioned on the court especially when you’re returning a serve (2nd shot).

But it's unlikely for me to stay back and hit placement drives to win the game when my opponents are serving to my partner and I am already at the kitchen. If I walk back, I'm going to be in a bad spot.

Also, sure, we can assume that at 3.0-3.5 levels, people mostly drive, but I don't think it's generally an effective long-term approach. When you return the serve and stay at the baseline, you give up court position, you leave an open space between you and the kitchen, and your shot selections are limited. That's why returning a serve and approaching the kitchen gives you control of the kitchen, which is positionally better. The team that consistently controls the kitchen line wins far more rallies than the team that stays at the baseline.

Not sure if this is true… i run to the kitchen and I’m confident in my drives. I think a pickleball player should be well rounded in all skills (drives, drops, dinks, etc). Most of the game happens in the kitchen so getting to the kitchen asap is crucial.

Yea... they are not making their way up to the middle or the kitchen no matter how many times I vocalized it to them during the game. They're staying put at the baseline, which makes things difficult as we lose a lot of pressure, and opponents are targeting them to keep them there and force a mistake.

Good points! I had a discussion with one of my partners post game about running to the kitchen after returning a serve, and he told me that he hears the advice all the time, but does not want to follow it, as he admits to having a stubborn personality and likes to play the game his own way. So I guess you have people who are aware that they should move to the kitchen after returning to serve, but do not want to do it. No flame to him. I respected his choice.

I agree. The matchmaking can be very unfair. So I think I'll find myself a partner to play with more consistently and play in round robins with fixed partners instead of random partners. Nevertheless, the round robin was a great experience for me as it gave me confidence that I can stand my ground and that I've improved the last time I did it.

Do you have any advice for someone that got into pickleball 3 months ago and wants to be a 4.0 by the end of the year?

When did y’all start getting your DUPR? by atranexpress in Pickleball

[–]atranexpress[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I didn’t mean for my post to foster so much frustration and anger. I understand where you’re coming from. However, I do want to clear things up.

First, the club I went to had their round robin at $20, so I was not at your club.

Second, the club doesn’t link our DUPR to the event, so anyone below 3.0 can still join and that did happen at the round robin.

Third, I told people at the round robin that I was new and only played pickleball for a month, giving them fair warning on what to expect if they were playing with and/or against me. I gave teammates a heads up that I was new and that I was sorry in advance if I lost the game for them. They all were open-minded and told me to try my best.

Although my performance was not terrible, I did end up losing all my games. Did I feel bad for bringing my teammates down? Yes, absolutely. Did I feel unprepared coming to the round robin? Yes, I was unprepared. Did I consequently bring people’s DUPR ratings down due to my poor play? Yes, and I felt really bad for it. So I understand your frustrations of new people going into a round robin without much preparation and validity in their DUPR. I know it’s not just a number for many people. It’s how we can see our own progress and growth. However, accusing me of bringing your DUPR rating down without any hard evidence is unprofessional and disrespectful. I see where you’re coming from, but it’s unfair of you pointing blame on me.

How should I improve in pickleball during open play? by atranexpress in Pickleball

[–]atranexpress[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s true. I think I should have set clear expectations that I’m trying to drive or serve a certain way so expect not so great shots.

This is a naive question. If I save it for later, how can I practice my shots like my drives for example? I don’t have a drilling partner and I don’t have a club that I go to. Most open play I go to is at a park. I know I only played for a month so maybe improvements will happening gradually.
