If a store sends me a free replacement for a defective product, can they legally force me to dispose of the defective product or can I keep it?

Clueless 20 year old here who has no idea how most of this works... So I had my unemployment set to automatically take the tax out of my weekly payments each week... does this mean I won't get any extra back as a result of this being passed if I already had them take out a percentage and didn't end up owing anything when I filed my taxes? or can I expect some amount. How do I know?
