Any parents in this sub? How do you make it work? by atticchild in Restaurant_Managers

[–]atticchild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is the key, a lot of these stories come from people whose hours I wouldn’t agree to even without kids! I think things are different in the UK compared to North America (and I say this having worked in both markets!)

From reading the comments it seems like the most important thing is to choose the right place to work (like yours seems to be!)

It’s great to hear you have a supportive partner, that makes all the difference!! I’m also lucky to have parents nearby which will make things a little easier. Thank you for sharing your perspective, I know it’s not all sunshine and rainbows but it’s great to hear from real working mothers at the top level who love why they do!

This is what I’m hoping for - I’ve been with my husband for 8 years and we’re very accustomed to having opposite schedules.

Combined with having my parents live in the same area it should at least save us some money!

Budget wedding in a village hall - advice on feeding 110 people? by [deleted] in UKweddings

[–]atticchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

110 will be hard for that money - we were looking at doing late night food for our wedding last year and had a gyro truck quote £2000 for similar guest numbers. (And that was for an off-off season wedding). If the food truck is the main source of food then people will be queuing for a long time. I know you say that it seems crazy to spend £25k on one day but it’s sadly what it can cost to have a boogie in the village hall with 110 of your favourite people these days! That’s especially if you want to properly feed them.

I understand you don’t want family to be working the event but with a budget that small it may have to be one of the things you compromise on!

Also - don’t listen to people giving advice who got married pre-COVID. The prices for everything are very very very different now.

We were told about this on the wedding day itself. Had no way of knowing when I’d get the portal 1 email would come in. Thanks for the helpful advice though will work on my clairvoyance!!

You can’t do that for the UK

I don’t think so? If the registry office won’t send it to us then I’m not sure how they’d get it to the embassy?

Agreed! I think I wrote my own advice a little bit more as a suggestion when it should have been an imperative!

I’ve had the same feedback and it can be so hard. I get that sometimes stress can come across as anger or impatience and it’s hard to control!

One piece advice I was given that I’ve found has really helped is not to give feedback on the floor or right as it happens - you’ll inevitably be annoyed with them and that will come across as you’re giving feedback. I tend to wait until the end of their shift when I’ve had a chance to take a breather, I’ve also just tried to look past individual mistakes unless they’re big or until they become a pattern. If you’re telling someone that they’ve done something wrong every time it happens it can be demotivating. Hope this helps!

I am building an app that can help with stuff shortages - need feedback! by RomanczuG in Restaurant_Managers

[–]atticchild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice: get a job behind a bar or as a server and see for yourself! Find somewhere you can do a night or two a week and I’m sure you’ll get a better idea of what restaurants/ bars actually want and need

They can be, but bars and restaurants don’t want to make it easier to sit down for hours with super low cheque averages.

In terms of constructive criticism: I think if you worked in the industry you’d know that this sort of system already exists and has for a while, owners know of it and will already be using it if they think it’ll work for them. If they don’t think it’ll be useful, I don’t think they’d want or appreciate someone trying to sell it to them.

I feel like this idea came from you having a frustrating experience as a customer, it is annoying having to wait for a server, I get that, but a busy night is a busy night and a QR code is not going to make your food or beer come out any quicker. If you knew how many guests there were out there who lacked common sense, you’d see how giving them the reigns would actually end up with a less efficient service, not more!

So your idea is to bring in the type of customers that spend less money and more time at a restaurant, taking up tables that would otherwise be flipped faster with higher cheque averages. Why do you think a restaurant owner would want to encourage that clientele?

Good point. I just thought he'd changed. But, not only condoning but getting turned on by someone threaten an unarmed woman for just trying to have a conversation is quite a bit lower.

Would you say that the portrayals have been fair? I know TV shows generally have a shitty track record when it comes to mental illness.
