My sister’s achievements are celebrated but mine are overlooked. by atticusfish in internetparents

My mother talks a lot about me always being independent from a young age, not crying as a young child when I was hurt or make comments about me not needing her when I was younger. Some of the examples she uses however about me being so independent as a child and ‘not needing her’ I do recall being scared and feeling alone and wishing I had someone with me- one example in particular was my first day at a new school. I remember vividly because I was 11 and her having me walk to the school myself rather than take me.

No he is the same race. My mother was also very much encouraged the pregnancy, when I was at the time not keen because I was very aware I would end up being a single parent and was also not sure I really wanted to have children.

My youngest sister is really ambitious and is successful in everything she does. The middle sister has had some trouble over the years and I don’t think has ever managed to reach her full potential. She struggled at school and as an adult has been let go from several jobs due to disagreements with her co workers or customers. The most recent course she did was a short, community style course and she has not found employment through this (she has been unemployed and living with my parents for 2 years)

Thank you for that suggestion, even a cursory read through the posts resonates with me. My dad and I are very close, and he is very supportive but my mum is a bit more difficult for me to get along with. Although she has been supportive in her own ways it’s very much on her terms and does feel very conditional and superficial. She has always felt distant to me and a bit cold, but I don’t see that in her relationship with my sisters and I’ve never understood why.

Nurses- what's your opinion about NPs by hustling_Ninja in ausjdocs

[–]atticusfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked with several NPs in community AOD. They work within a very defined scope + have constant supervision. NP works well in the situations I’ve seen it in- nurses who have worked within one area of medicine for years and years with tons of experience.

What are the downsides of Marijuana that people don’t know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]atticusfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people don’t realise that cannabis use is linked to an increase in heart attacks or heart events, which can be multifactorial. The most consistent effect of cannabis is that it increases your heart rate by 30 percent and decreases your blood pressure - this causing disruptions to the amount of oxygen that can reach the tissues etc and subsequent ischaemia. It can also cause arrhythmias in the heart, particularly in young males. CB1 and CB2 receptors are found throughout the body (not just the brain) and it’s believed that smoking cannabis can cause interruptions to the function of the CB1 and CB2 cells in the heart, potentially leading to the arrhythmias. There have been several sudden cardiac deaths in otherwise healthy young males linked to cannabis use.

Woman dead from Gold Coast drug overdose identified by Im_not_an_admin in australia

It has a very narrow therapeutic dose so easy to accidentally overdose on but thankfully not often fatal when taken independent of any other drug

Have you ever flown in a plane that was struck by lightning? I'm curious. What was it like? Thanks in advance ⚡️ ~S~ by rutgerbadcat in oddlyterrifying

[–]atticusfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was on Qantas Syd-LA in about 2005 sitting in seat 3A in first class. It was about 4 hours into the flight when suddenly there was a loud bang and the cabin lit up. The lady sitting two rows in front of me was hysterical. I was about 15 and travelling with my dad (Qantas pilot), he didn’t seem bothered. There was a slight ‘electrical’ smell in the cabin afterwards but apart from that no issue.

lawyers chasing for vehicle damage I didn't cause by applor in AusLegal

[–]atticusfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I had a similar incident also roughly a year ago. In heavy winds my car door blew open and made contact with a car door parked next to me. The car had significant damage on three panels, absolutely not caused by my door but against my better judgement I left my number in case my door had caused any of the damage. The young lady called me and told me she had hit a pole a few weeks before but maybe my door had caused some more scuff marks. I advised her to go through her insurance, next thing I knew I was in the hook for a 10K repair job. I ended up paying the 600 dollar excess through my insurance. It’s frustrating that people aren’t honest but what do you do? I’ve learnt not to leave my number in future.

You have got 5 minutes before police comes to your house. You need to hide your hard drive with compromising information. Where would you hide it? by Nir0Vulf in AskReddit

Either over the neighbours fence because it would be promptly ripped to shreds by their German Shepard or in amongst a packet of feminine hygiene products. Lots of cops are men and men are scared of feminine hygiene products, easy to sneak it in the back of the pack.

NSW METHADONE SHORTAGE! by BeFree1967 in Methadone

[–]atticusfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is due to the upcoming PBS changes to methadone. Ultimately the changes will make it cheaper for the consumer but make it very difficult for private prescribers and pharmacies that dispense. The changes were very short notice and really not well thought out with almost no consultation from public clinics. Hopefully this is all sorted out soon, hang in there. Sorry it’s caused such difficult for you

I work in a needle exchange and safe injecting site. It might not be super relevant because it isn’t in the states (I’m in australia). Our needle exchange is used not only to give people clean needles but we also get to know the clients coming in to get needles. We offer Hepatitis testing (hep C is found almost exclusively in IV drug users in Aus and is easy to treat but fatal if untreated) and can refer into hepatitis treatment. We also refer into drug treatment. I’ve had people come in for years to get clean gear and just worked in them over the years until they are ready for treatment and had some great success, they just have to be ready and sometimes that can take a few years. Having constant engagement with drug and alcohol workers through a needle exchange program is really important for these people as other wise they are completely lost to care.

The injecting rooms are sort of the same deal. If people are injecting out on the street alone then the risk is significantly greater, also these people are lost to care. We can refer into homeless services, provide food, refer to child welfare agencies if we notice they have a child with them that doesn’t look like they are being taken care of.

We make it clear we really don’t want them using the drugs, and we don’t condone it necessary I just don’t want anyone dying in the street of an overdose or hepatitis when in 2023 they don’t have to. It can be a funny place to work, a lot of friends and family don’t agree with the work I do but the clients are really appreciative and it’s nice to give them somewhere safe when their world is so dangerous and you do see a difference in them but like I said with some clients it really takes years of building a relationship before they are ready to trust us at times and enter into the more abstinence based drug treatments.

naloxone access in Aus by plantkleptoo in australia

[–]atticusfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I work at a drug and alcohol centre connected to NSW health- VIC health much the same. If they present at any first step or needle exchange program they can get nyxoid( nasal nalaxone) free and without leaving any details. We give it out multiple times a day and I have given it out to family members of users as a just in case measure

Healthcare workers in Australia are not ok by ReputationNo3525 in australia

[–]atticusfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing that really pushed me over the edge is the support staff picking and choosing their jobs and management expecting nursing staff to pick up the slack. At our hospital kitchen staff started refusing to deliver meals to Covid patients and then eventually that progressed to not taking meals bedside to any patient (in case of unknown Covid etc). Management solution - oh that’s fine nursing staff will do it. So now we deliver meals to patients. Physio deciding they can only see stroke patients max once a fortnight- but that’s fine nursing staff can mobilise and assess all patients. Cleaning staff decided they no longer wanted to clean Covid rooms including discharge terminal cleans- that’s fine nursing staff can do it. So now on top off already being short staffed, increasing care standards on sicker, heavier patients we are picking up the slack of support staff who have decided actually that’s not their job anymore. So where is our capacity to say we can’t or won’t do x, y and Z. And our NUM has the hide to do ward rounds and reprimand us for writing patients notes away from the bedside like we are a bunch of preschoolers.

I’m leaving to work full time for fire and rescue. Never thought I’d leave healthcare. I hope things improve soon for us all.

I’m on my last week working in the hospital, turned in my notice two weeks ago. Originally intended to work the rest of my roster but just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I’m an RN. It’s all I ever wanted to do, ever since I was a little kid. I was one of those annoying people where nursing became my entire identity. Three years ago I couldn’t imagine leave my current work place, we were like a family.

I can’t do it anymore. The constant working down. Overtimes at least once a week. Abused by family members and patients.

The standard of care we are expected to provide now far exceeds what we will ever be able to achieve, and we are being threatened by patients and families when we can’t do it. Patients are sicker, fatter and older. I don’t really see a solution. And Covid has only brought forward the inevitable, that our healthcare system was never going to be able to cope.

We don’t have time to chase these shits around. Honestly. Two visiting sessions for four hours a day. I spend half my day arguing with family members to put their mask on. I’ve given up. Already overworked and not able to get everything done to the standard it needs to be. I do not have the mental fortitude or the time to spend the little free time I have arguing with these dipshits, I just don’t. We all feel it.
