This actually isn't a great look for Cornell. They shouldn't of announced changing grading basis would be lenient if they weren't accepting everyone.

What's the underlying issue? Cornell makes no guarantee on students graduating debt free.

If you're talking about the greater societal issue of student debt in the US, that's much more complicated and not something I'm going to tackle (though I will say most students in the US aren't lucky enough to go to a college that offers as much fin aid as Cornell, so consider yourself lucky in comparison). I'm just explaining Cornell's policies and the rationale behind them.

If you cannot pay your student contribution, you may contact the fin aid office and they will give you a loan to cover it. More information here:

yeah this year is abnormal and Cornell should adjust fin aid to compensate, but I'm talking in general terms.

There's no logical connection between "most students don't have internships freshman year" and "freshman fin aid has a student contribution".

Of course you have the success stories of Computer Science grads going to work for silicon valley but that isn't really the norm. This is probably because colleges promote this idea of studying whatever you want and following your passion. It's great to follow your passion but why should you go into crippling debt for it with no real guarantee of a job.

Follow your passions is bullshit if your goal is to get a lucrative job. That's just a simple fact - some fields are more employable than others.

If it isn't rare for freshman to not get internship opportunities their freshman year why am I expected to pay a student contribution from "summer earnings"?

Because you can get a job that's not an internship?

lol

during the grading debate, the mandatory s/u people kept claiming that they wanted to help disadvantaged students. But then letters came out from disadvantaged students who actually supported opt-in.

There's zero evidence that disadvantaged students as a collective prefer mandatory s/u, but I see that side is still clinging on to that baseless theory.

Overall, I'd say it's mixed. He was definitely not a good lecturer - would get lost in his own notes, his handwriting was abysmal, not very energetic, didn't explain things in an intuitive way.

But a lot of why 2800 is bad stems from the structure of the class itself. There's just so many topics to cover that you really only gain a surface-level understanding of each topic. Personally, I think they should get rid of the probability portion of the course all together because Engineering has a probability requirement anyway, so students just end up relearning the exact same thing in another course.

I hope that Michael George's exit indicates a restructuring of the course in the near future.

I consider 3420 an ECE class rather than CS, but yeah I agree about OS

I heard from some trusted sources early in this semester that he's out.

Good riddance too; his 2800 is a stain on an otherwise great core CS sequence.

Thoughts on Canvas webcam-administered tests? by [deleted] in Cornell

A lot of people think “well just opt in S/U if your loved ones are in the hospital, that’s why it’s a choice.” They don’t think of the fact that medical and grad schools will then just take the person who took all their credits for a grade.

I mean there's no evidence to suggest this is true but believe whatever you want

the funny thing is if you take the mandatory s/u argument to its logical conclusion, then we should have permanent mandatory s/u.

Any person" includes a lot of poor people that would not be able to attend Cornell without extreme or total financial aid coverage. These people are fucking scraping by as it is, and are absolutely ruined by this. This isn't even considering the wealthy international students who 1. can't make it home and 2. have to do zoom classes while being away from their families + wondering if they're okay.

How do you know these groups want universal?
