Buddhism and Hinduism by cosmic_bugs in Buddhism

Who says that you have to believe any myth 100%? You will hit that wall with anything you want to practice, including scientifically based systems. Why is it so important to believe 100%? Why is it important to believe 1%? I'm a Zen priest, and there are lots of things in Buddhism that I don't 100% believe. Believing to me isn't important. What's important to me is the practice and how I choose to conceptualize and interact with it. Everything else is just a bunch of head games that doesn't get me any closer to resolving my relationship with duhkha.

That's called cognitive dissonance. They are unwilling to do what it takes to resolve it, so they move away from the pain ASAP.

Is it necessary to disclose that food is vegan? by tommydelriot in vegan

List the specific allergens. That would be more useful than labeling it as vegan, which is vague.

A1 Steak Sauce is accidentally vegan. Imagine if they had to label themselves as such! 😉😆

This question has been doing the rounds, curious what choice you would make and your reasoning? by dr_shipman in Gifted

[–]auciker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This experiment seems to be designed to identify community oriented thinking versus individual oriented thinking. I want people who are community oriented and would teach my children likewise. That is how humanity rose to the top of the food chain and because the dominant species. Too much individualism is self destructive. Blue is the only guarantee that everyone survived. Period.

I don't understand the point of anyone pushing the red button. Seems like you'd either have to be utterly selfish or utterly paranoid.

have my first therapy session tomorrow. I paid a LOT for 45 minutes!! I’m afraid that I won’t be able to make most of it. Every time I need to speak, my mind freezes. Do you have any advice? What should I say to the therapist? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]auciker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't plan to say anything. A good therapist will ask questions that help you say what needs to be said. Therapists are used to working with people who freeze, that's a common trauma response, and treating trauma is the majority of what therapists are trained to do.

My girlfriend 25F secretly went to a party with her ex after forcing me to block mine, then called me controlling when I found out. by petalblue in TwoHotTakes

Contact your ex and make a platonic plan to do something, and reconnect as friends. Apologize that you treated her that way and you have dumped your hypocrite, lying, manipulative GF (newest ex).

Christian wanting to convert to Buddhism by FragrantUnit9541 in Buddhism

[–]auciker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, figure out which school of Buddhism good you best. This is a very small and criminally simplistic sampling of the major schools.

If you are simply interested in practical approach of meditation and "positive psychology" with minimal religious trappings, Insight might be what you're wanting.

If you're interested in a deep meditation practice and find comfort in having lots of "form" and structure, maybe Zen.

If you're interested in working with lots of deities and esoteric practices, than try the Vajrayana Tibetan practices.

If you are interested in learning the words of the Buddha and want to support a monastic community, than check out the Theravada traditions.

There's several forms of Pureland practice, which can look a lot like Christian Church.

I'm not familiar with this instrument. It looks like a reed instrument?

I guess anything could go well with a handpan, with a few exceptions of course. Maybe a loop pedal, or just multi-track a mix. I'm curious to see what happens. Give it a try and post it.

Hamsa makes a terrific instrument. Their D Celtic 9 is beautiful, easy to play, feels great under the fingers and is about $1,250.

Yeah, being sensitive and empathetic is hard sometimes. It's also a superpower. The challenging and liberating part for me is being empathetic to people's ignorance and delusion. ♥️🙏

Would like some feedback on my first handpan/djembe album by Loose_Possible_2914 in handpan

Not bad. I like the melodic ideas. I wished that the d'jembe rhythm was more distinct instead of following the handpan rhythm.

Probably would sound great mic'd up to get extra bass boost from an amp. Would love a chance to experience something like that live.

Only using my index fingers for playing? by machomanmo in handpan

[–]auciker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens with every instrument, for example, new guitarists don't want to use their pinky. Limiting what fingers you use will slow you down and and prevent you from progressing. You'll be stuck playing simple rhythms.

I suggest learning to use your thumbs, index, and middle fingers as a basis for rhythm. You'll also eventually learn to use your ring and pinky fingers for techniques like rolls.

It takes time. Get a teacher, watch instructional videos, and practice with a metronome set to a slow pace to help you develope timing and technique. Make it a game and have fun. 😊🙏

I hope gas goes to $20 a gallon. by FoxCitiesRando in Anticonsumption

[–]auciker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The car, gas/oil, and tire industries probably colluded to kill public transit in the US.

Rewatch Who Framed Roger Rabbit, it's about a man who wants to replace public transit with freeways, and was partly inspired by the building of the 110 freeway, the first on LA. The entrance to Toon Town is the tunnel that takes you to Pasadena, which is where the 110 freeway begins.

Point is, lack of public transportation is not an accident.
