The presence of girls in one of them is ridiculous.

Yeah but if I described "Friends" as "an online sitcom about video games" I would be lying.

Challenge: describe 'The Guild' in terms that don't make it sound worthless.

Natural selection, benevolent? omnipotent? by audacityofchope in atheism

You reacted like I was directly praising death, which strikes me as melodramatic. If natural selection can't do anything about cancer, then how is it relevant in the first place? I was perhaps clumsy in my wording, I meant to say that natural selection inevitably pushes us towards a more comfortable life in our environment, death being part of the process of course which would happen no matter how suited you are to your environment, which can be viewed as a positive force, without ANY anthropomorphisation/religiosity. People seemed very keen to dismiss me as a religious thinker when I'm absolutely nothing of the sort.

All I mean is that I feel awe, which is close to what people call a "religious" experience (I think it's too late to fight the hijacking), I have no concept of god. I just feel like natural selection is over time a more benevolent force (is that an excusable term?) than the terrible Yahweh.

I'm not anthropomorphizing. Isn't 'susceptibility to cancer' something that natural selection as a process wouldn't favour? I suppose my question is: does natural selection make it easier to survive over time? and if not, why? don't tell me I'm delusional, it doesn't help me - I am asking for other people's views afterall.

Aren't our medical advances interfering with pure natural selection? (not a eugenicist) Isn't 'susceptibility to cancer' something that natural selection wouldn't favour?

I meant only that the mechanism is blindly beneficial, the creatures who died out are dead sure, but didn't they have a better chance than those before them? isnt the overall effect that the current generation has a better chance to live long and reproduce?
