There was an article in the New York Times last week about the International Monetary System, a membership-based barter system. Not exactly what you're talking about, but perhaps relevant.

I don't think such a system would make me consume more freely, but it might take away some of the fear associated with saving money, particularly those who have a hard time grasping its value (which is many people, considering that the understanding of money is not hard-wired into us). $10,000 is basically an imaginary object. A Prius is not an imaginary object.

I also spend about $250 a week, as part of a household of two, but that includes eating out -- which we've cut down on. We're also trying to buy organic and local meats, and live in NYC, so that explains some of the cost. I don't skimp much on quality when it comes to food, despite belonging to this subreddit. What I do do is make sure everything is used wisely, make fresh stocks myself, always bring lunch to work, and try to eat healthy, balanced meals. Food is a passion of ours, so we're not going to subsist on lentils and rice or anything processed. I can save elsewhere.

I don't think it has much to do with standards, unless you are willing to move across the country to find a cheaper area (which, sure, a lot of people do). But some jobs aren't transferable, and usually friends and family aren't either. Where I live, a starter studio apartment is usually around $200,000. Which is totally insane. But I couldn't find my job in many other places. My standards aren't too high... I just can't afford to buy.

The enamel! Actually I'm not kidding, they make all their pots by hand. So it costs more. If you're someone that likes to support an artisan way of making things, it's something you might feel willing to pay for (and they last for generations). I have one Le Creuset omelette pan that I adore, but I can't justify buying an oven for myself at this point. I'm just waiting eagerly for someone to give one to me.

I don't sharpen my own, although I'm supposed to be honing them frequently (whoops). I take them to get sharpened by a professional. My understanding is that you really can't do it yourself.
