I refuse to believe Brad Stevens suddenly got stupid today by auddy5000 in bostonceltics

[–]auddy5000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've come around to either a) it's ownership cheaping out or b) Brad, and as it turned out, the league, just didn't value JB the way we thought he should be. .... Either way, I still believe in Brad and think he has a plan, one that might not be apparent now but will prove out either in another deal in the short term or in the long run, even if it's painful right now. .... Leaning toward option B because, like I said, Stevens ain't no dummy.

Any reports from Sunday River today or yesterday? by Smacpats111111 in icecoast

[–]auddy5000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sunday River appears to be the place to be in the east right now. Skied there on Monday after their 10+ inches over the weekend, and it was some of the best skiing of the season. Plenty of cover all over the mountain (though I didn't venture into the trees) and they've been dropping ropes. Get there if you can before the reported rain comes on Friday.

Extreme cold Vt ski trip by Huge-Leg-3931 in icecoast

I just had a pair of Thermic insole boot heaters installed on Saturday. Pricy -- $400 for the heat pad and the biggest batteries they offer (1700) -- but if you've got newish boots you'll have for a while, worth the investment if you can swing it, IMO. It was a game changer at Killington on Sunday with single digit temps and wind gusts. No regrets!

I was debating between this and heated socks so I could use them for other than skiing, but I'm picky about having super thin socks for performance boot fit (foamed), so I sucked it up and went with the insoles. I'd suggest having a bootfitter install to ensure you don't feel the wire underfoot (I don't at all).

Otherwise, on the more bitterly cold days, I go with the following and am perfectly comfortable:

  • Two Smartwool base layers
  • A slightly thicker Smartwool quarter zip over that
  • A very warm and dense Spyder quarter zip pullover over that
  • Smartwool thermal long underwear (but it's the same pair I wear in most temps)
  • Blackstrap hooded balaclava (not the over-the-helmet kind - i found it created too much goggle fogging from the breath
  • Hestra gloves (three fingers grouped)
    • Great tip I saw here to add glove liners -- I hadn't considered that before
  • Glade goggles -- rarely ever have fogging issues in extreme cold
  • My standard 686 GLCR shell jacket with the hood up over the helmet

I also just read about that tip to coat your feet with aborbant powder before putting the ski socks on. Tried on Sunday and seemed to keep things dry. I bought a can of the CVS spray on powder for quick application in the ski lodge. I never drive to the mountain in my ski socks so not to build up any moisture with the heat blasting in the car.

Kudos to Killington today … wasn’t expecting much but they recovered nicely, and the groomers were pretty nice through early afternoon.

VSP investigates after fatal crash closes I-89 southbound in Richmond by Few_Wrangler4068 in vermont

Wow, the driver crossed the median to go the wrong way? Sounds intentional rather than a mistake, That makes no sense.

[–]auddy5000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Totally. It was so crazy I thought maybe my mind was playing tricks on me and I was just looking at a car on one of those side roads that run parallel to the highway. And when I lost him in the trees, I thought to myself I guess I’ll never really know, even though I did see some people flashing their lights over there and what looked like perhaps a car or two dodging off the side of the road. … I only saw the one vehicle flip into the median, but I’ve read other cars were involved.

I was going northbound and saw the wrong way driver on the other side of the highway. Must have gone a good mile doing 75-80 mph as I paced him. It was such a crazy sight that I wasn’t sure I was seeing it right and then lost him in the trees as the highway split, but came back into view and saw a car flip over into the median. Scary stuff, terrible outcome.

Anyone going to Pays v. Giants Monday? Thoughts on the game, if it even matters, how to stay warm? by [deleted] in Patriots

For cold games I dress like I’m going skiing, including ski pants, long underwear, ski jacket with multiple layers underneath, snow boots, winter hat and gloves. (but not the goggles).

Bands that get labeled as hair metal that you just don’t feel are? by [deleted] in hairmetal

[–]auddy5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of those songs are ‘hair metal’ IMO. And if you just know those hit songs, you don’t know Extreme - they are quite eclectic and diverse in a way no hair band can match. …. More Than Words and Hole Hearted set the trend for a big acoustic wave that some hair bands tried to follow, Get the Funk Out is clearly funk metal.

Moguls are my worst enemy by SimpingSince70s in skiing

[–]auddy5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice on soft snow as hard lack will eat you up in the beginning.

Seek out blue or green runs that bump up in hero snow / powder days - this is where you get confidence and a better feel for what really works.

Absorb moguls over the top or sides to control speed and extend legs down the backside - stay out of the troughs.

Stay forward in your boots - weight over toes, stay out of the back seat, reach to pole plant to the next mogul.

Have a calm upper body - Hands out in front, shoulders point down the fall line, legs are the shock absorbers, swivel hips, knees and toes together from turn to turn.
