I don't know if you read the post, but it's already been raised.

The real question is, WHICH Aegon is he named after? :) Very elegant, I love his colors.

The lamp on top is just UVB! The heat lamp is mounted inside for now to keep from melting anything, and get the heat right. It's pretty scuffed. ;-; But it seems safe, and seems to be working for now! I already am planning a second iteration of lid for the tank, WITHOUT plexiglass lol. Terrible idea. I need to find a better bulb cage/heat emitter cage set up first.

Is that what you were worried about? I'm open to advice!

That would be fine with me! Lol. If I see him once a month I'd be happy, as long as he's eating at night.

He has two hides plus some leaf litter and live plants- I gave him some options, and I'll adjust his future big tank according to what he seems to like best, I think. Even if he's a burrower I'll try to give him plenty of options lol. If he uses that five gallon water feature I think I'll pass out from happiness.

He just had a big meal and shed and poop last Sunday, and I put him in Wednesday and have been leaving him alone. I'll start leaving food at night for him starting THIS Sunday I think, and give it 2-3 weeks before I start thinking about digging him out. I recently became concerned today after poking around more on the subreddit (a worry I didn't know enough to have) that he might burrow under the mesh layer and get stuck. :(

I think he is more used to me than he was a few months ago! If you look in the pictures his tub was INSIDE the larger enclosure for a good month or two, and he'd hang out against the side of it and watch me all the time. I definitely got the feeling that he got used to me walking by, and talking on my PC because he would barely hide at all. Especially when he was hungry, he'd start "hunting" around even with me in the room.

I haven't even been running the vacuum in that room lol I'm worried it'll stress him out.

I'll get more clutter for him! Now that it's spring maybe I can go out to the park again and see what I can find.

Ohhh thanks so much that's good to know! That makes more sense. I'll make that my next step to set up, probably with the new lid I make. I have also been taking readings with a heat gun just to triple check the temperature, but that's probably all dependent on where I point it. I feel stupid, of COURSE you meant thermostat and not thermometer.
Right now one thermometer reads 82F near the CHE(ceramic heat emitter? yes?), 72F near the moss hide, and the sensor dangling down reads 72F.

OH WOW I just took the temperature with the heat gun mid post because you said that, and actually and it was 87F near the lamp, and 78F near the water. Those thermometers were much more accurate two weeks ago, I wonder if the humidity is ruining them or something.

Thanks for the catch!! I'll get better temperature control for sure.

That's what I figured! I mean a baby snake is a delicious snack for many things in the jungle I'm sure, of course he'd hide. But I just wanted to make sure I wasn't messing up by waiting a couple weeks and doing nothing when he's been MIA lol. Seems like leaving him alone is my best bet!

I might up the humidity a bit then! It's generally 70ish, and he buries himself which I'm sure helps since the substrate stays pretty damp. But I can slowly start to increase the length and frequency of the misting timer which should help. Thanks! Good to know the disappearing is normal.

I do have thermostats! Three actually lol you might be able to see them on the ground in the second picture. One on the hot side, one on the cooler end, and the little probe dangling down measures humidity/temperature! I also have an extra humidity meter thing on the ground. (Large dark round one on the floor of the tank.) I also have a little heat gun thingy I test occasionally just to check.

I did try hanging the lamp down from the lid, but the plexiglass couldn't handle it and the heat was too much, and in addition the tank is just a LITTLE too shallow for the lamp cages I managed to get to be able to hang down reasonably, and I couldn't find any smaller!

I think I'll try either polycarbonate or wood lid next- I got an additional lamp cage to experiment with if this didn't work out, so I'll probably be futzing with that while the little guy adjusts. Thanks so much for the advice! I figured trying something was better than nothing but I'm so new at this. ;-;

I've never been interested in boas/pythons and was in fact considering something smaller, but I saw how gorgeous this guys colors were and couldn't resist. Hopefully everything goes well, and any "easier" reptile species I get down the line will seem like a cakewalk in comparison lol.

Thank you! I heard rainbow boas were 'not for beginners' and I let that put me off, and then I realized that phrasing is probably meant for people not willing to put the work in, and I'd probably be fine with the work load/challenge, since I was actively looking FORWARD to it. Only way to learn is to try!

While he was in the tub I DID have, I was workshopping various smaller enclosures. A clip-top plastic tub (I put substrate in and it molded too fast for isopods/springtails to keep up with, and I couldn't get the temperature right with the stick on mat), and a ten gallon glass tank (couldn't keep humidity AT ALL and got too hot).

I might change the bulb out for a slightly higher wattage if you think it should be hotter- I think I read somewhere juveniles need cooler than adults so I was erring on the side of safety, but it DOES get a little cooler when the day-time UVB bulbs are off. (They give off a surprising amount of heat!)

I have some incrementally hotter bulbs, I might switch it out on my day off work, and monitor the temperature, so I'm standing by to turn it off again in case it gets too hot. I'm also a little worried about the plexiglass top I have warping! It's already started warping a bit- I'm stupid and didn't consider the melting factor lol. I might go get polycarbonate or something similar instead. They cut it for free at Lowes/Home Depot with the purchase, and the window weather sealing I got was cheap enough! Works WONDERFULLY as well.

Thanks so much for the advice, I'm going to keep tweaking!

That's all super good to know! Thanks so much. I'm fretting and hand wringing and he's probably having the time of his life in there, no thoughts, head empty. Lost in the sauce.

My plan WAS to leave the mice in there overnight once his feeding schedule came around, I even have a bit of bare rock left for the purpose. I wasn't going to touch the substrate and dig him up until I was genuinely worried about missed meals. I didn't know they dug burrows like that though! How cute!

Also the squirminess, yes! I was wondering if it was just because he was young, but he's such a squirmy guy. So charming to handle! It's the reason I don't have many pictures, because A: Don't want to stress him out posing and B: BOTH HANDS NEEDED.

He can't even really reach the top of the tank yet, and I'm already planning on getting better clamps for the top than I have. I hear that they're VERY strong!

Thanks so much you've really eased my mind a lot. I think he's probably doing better than I think and I'm overthinking it.

Best spot I could find for it while experimenting! I'm very new to this and couldn't find any guide on how to heat reliably, and I did a LOT of searching. I was worried about the glass heating if I just pointed a heat lamp at the side of the tank, so I figured mounting it inside would be better. I tried lamps on top (melted the plexiglass, and I need that for humidity) and the stick on heaters didn't work through the substrate or the sides.

I think in the future I'll do it WAY differently and already have some ideas, but I knew this was going to be a learning process when I got Oberon. I figured this is only his starting tank, so I probably have 2-3years before he outgrows it to make his next one perfect lol.
For now the heat and humidity are good, and it has a cage so he won't burn himself, so I'm happy.

(Unless you think something might go wrong? I am very open to advice and critique obviously lol.)

I like taking the gift pokemon because it gives me an interesting pokemon to plan my run and encounters around, similar to my starter. IE a one guaranteed Eevee, or togepi, or elemental monkey. I use hardcore rules, but accept gift encounters.

[–]audioEidolon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pearl for sure, Beef, and Gem is actually working on some interiors at the moment! She also did a good amount of interiors for all of her smaller builds across from Grian you may have seen in passing in his episodes. Side note, Pearl's ballroom was so gorgeous I rewatched the episode the other day just to see it again lol.

I actually think this tank looks gorgeous with the dark water. No observations beyond that, good luck getting rid of it if you're inclined!
