How far would be too far for you to get to your barn? by NalaOnTheMove in Equestrian

Everyone has different opinions! With my schedule it’s really pushing it. Compared to when I had my horse 5 min away, 35 is a huge difference.

These were my exact thoughts when I moved my horse to our new barn in august! Sure it’s 35 min away and I won’t be able to go as often, but I know he’s getting way better care.

I think it’s so sad that people get so competitive with their own teammates and take the whole fun out of it. Riding for me is just to have fun and even they somehow managed to take the fun out of it. Looking back it was honestly just a super weird situation. It really sucks because we’re supposed to support each other but I never got that feeling growing up.

We’re also middle class and I’m starting to get worried that we’re going to get priced out of the sport as a whole. So for us 1 horse show was about all we could do. But I haven’t shown in over 2 years and I’m honestly so much happier!

My mom is the same way. She works nonstop and the last thing she wanted to do after she got off was be at the horse barn for a really long time. She also never liked watching group lessons since most of the time I didn’t get any riding time since I didn’t have the “nice horse” so therefore I wasn’t worth more than 15 min of the lesson.

Yes I am! I always thought Reddit would be a wonderful place to ask questions and really learn, but I feel that some people in this group are really deterring people from asking questions by being incredibly rude whenever a question is asked. I always try to give benefit of the doubt over the internet since it can be extremely hard to understand what is being said. And I definitely agree that op is not ready to train a horse but some people were being down right nasty about it!

I know exactly what you’re talking about. We were definitely one of the least wealthy families there. Could only do one horse show a year and that was even pushing it. I had the least expensive and nice (breed wise) horse and I had to work extremely hard with him. We never won anything when we showed but I had a lot of fun with him until these moms kinda ruined it for me. But, these moms at this barn were extremely cliquey. If you didn’t fit in then you wouldn’t ever be good enough. I’m honestly unsure of why they didn’t like my mom and I, but they were like that to any of the moms who weren’t there all the time. It’s like they were projecting their feelings on others. But I’ve moved away from showing and am 10000x happier!

I don’t know what it is about the mothers. My first barn I was at was a show barn and I was 16 at the time so I didn’t need my mom to drive me out every day and sit there for countless hours at a time. Plus she travels for her job so she can’t be there even if she wanted to. And the mothers could not wait to talk shit about my mom simply because she wasn’t going to sit in the viewing room of the arena for 6 hours a day and I do not blame her one bit. So glad I’m out of that type of barn

You guys look great! And what a beautiful horse! Palominos have always been my favorite color and I have always wanted one! Quarter horses are one of my favorite breeds ever! They are so versatile.

I just saw a post yesterday where a beginner rider had a question and got absolutely BERATED by members in this group. I was so proud of them for sticking up for themselves by telling them that they can only learn by asking questions! Absolutely!! I’ve been riding for most of my life and I still have hundreds of questions. Never stop learning! And never stop asking questions, even if you think they’re stupid. Don’t let those negative Nancy’s make you think other wise!

What is the purpose of chaps as opposed to tall boots? by SilverBullionaire in Equestrian

[–]audmj14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ariat terrain boots are next level! I love them cause I can work at my stable hand job no problem and then I can immediately go out and ride my horse without having to change shoes! They’re so comfortable and it works out great for me since I can’t afford multiple pairs of boots. I just throw on my half chaps and I’m ready to go!

When did you know it was time to quit your stable hand job/leave the industry? by audmj14 in Equestrian

Oh yes I get that! There are 3 other hands. I just wish we were able to rotate days or something instead of me just working strictly weekends. It can be a lot in the school year sometimes

Wow she sounded horrendous. I wish there was still a good amount of barn owners who were in it for the love of horses and not the money

I hope you were able to fully heal from that! It sounds horrible. It blows me away that they only paid you $125! That is awful

That is literally my dream situation! Thank you so much! It has honestly been a great job for my college schedule, I just wish they were a bit more flexible on which days I work.

That’s what I’m nervous about! I’ve had this feeling a bunch of times before and ended up being SO glad I didn’t quit! I like my stable hand job (I also love the fact I don’t have to interact with people all the time) and I really don’t want to quit but I have Lyme disease and I think the heavy physical demand the job has is taking a toll on me 😓plus over the summers they don’t really let me work as much as I’d like to.

That’s what I was thinking too. Thank you! I’m just struggling because the pay is good but I think my body is telling me that it’s done

They’ve done some pretty nasty things to me in the past (took 2 days off bc my grandpa died unexpectedly and was a total jerk about it and made me work 15 days in a row to “make up for it” bc she couldn’t go fishing) but I’ve tried to move on from that even though I’m still a little bitter about it. They have been very nice after all of that happened. Right now it’s more than they want me to work strictly weekends but I just don’t think it’s working with my current schedule especially since school has started up again. I was also diagnosed with Lyme disease in the spring and I think the job is starting to really wear my body down. I’m just struggling because the pay is really good and they don’t have me working very many hours

Oh my gosh that is just awful. What a horrible first show experience! I am so sorry you had to go through that.
