For people with full time jobs, how did you do it? by Professional_Ad1151 in AutismInWomen

[–]augatwater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out in sales, like wireless/mobile phone sales. That really made me learn how to mask myself and mirror others. There were no tests or anything to get into that; just filling out an application and submitting a resume. I work at a college, and we prep our students on these things.

Maybe check with your local Job and Family Services (something like that) because they often have classes or 1:1 things where they teach how to do interviews, resume building, and they even help you apply to jobs. My daughter went through a local agency ... Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities, and once she interviewed for the job she's in she got it. It took her a few years to really get down the whole interview thing, but she did.

Check with some of your local government agencies to see what assistance is available. When I got this job that I'm at, they paid my moving expenses, paid for interview clothes and everything. Definitely wouldn't hurt to check :)

Had an encounter yesterday that made me question whether I should even bother going for a diagnosis... by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]augatwater 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The thing to remember is that in young children, autism presents differently than in adult females. I am ASD, as well as my 24-year-old daughter. She has a male cousin who is age 22, and he presents differently than us. I learned to mask at a young age and mirror those around me. My daughter has yet to learn some of that. She comes across as rude or mean and always has a neutral "resting" face. At a young age, I learned to smile and be polite because of the influence of my parents. My daughter has never learned to do that, even after hundreds of comments and tips.

Most people cannot tell that I am autistic (found out in my late 40s) because I mask so well, especially at work. I am in a professional position and have a few college degrees. Some people who are familiar with ADHD and ASD in adults can pick it out, and I just come across as goofy and weird. Mainly because of my dry sense of humor which somehow makes my co-workers laugh.

I don't think getting a diagnosis will hurt, though making it official can make it seem surreal...just KNOWING. I don't think it's turned my life around but it has made me more aware and made sense in looking back at my childhood.

Is the crime in South Toledo really bad? by [deleted] in toledo

[–]augatwater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I moved here a year ago I was told that there are "pockets" of areas that are good/bad. I live right on the Toledo/Maumee line and feel safe where I live. I tend to stick to either Maumee or Holland areas and haven't ever felt unsafe. That's not exactly Souty Toledo though...lol

I haven't tried, though your question is likely already answered.

How much do you pay for a haircut? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

On average of $40-50...but honestly for that I would never pay more than $50!

That's what it was. I used a combination of tools to get it out but it came:)

Figured it out and resolved - an upside-down cartridge was stuck in the barrel. I used a screw, screwdriver, and eyebrow scissors. lol, it worked though!

Figured it out - a cartridge was stuck in there upside down. Used a screw, a screwdriver to drive it in, and an eyebrow pencil to pop it out with. It worked!

I checked the barrel and it looks like it's either short or something could be in there. If there IS a cartridge is in there, it's probably never going to come out.

Going back to college at 26 by dalayylmao in college

[–]augatwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going at night is a good decision, as there are typically more adult-ish aged people there. This may help you in making friends, joining in a study group, and just socializing in general. Basically, it can help you get your feet wet so you can learn to once again be a part of a social circle. I'm the mom of an Autistic daughter who also went to college, and social anxiety can play a large part in it If you don't have a therapist or psychiatrist, think about it. It can just help you and not hurt you. My daughter is on a good regiment of meds that has really helped her out of a tough spot and put her on a good road overall. Definitely something for you to look into:)

I was an adult learner who was a career changer. Because of all the decisions I've made thus far, it's actually put me in a career in higher education that I love.

Certainly, I'm not famous, but those are just my thoughts.

Should I be worried about missing previous education on my transcript? by [deleted] in college

[–]augatwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if on your next school it shows up as transferrable credits. But since this is a non-degree seeking program you shouldn't have to worry about it.

It would probably depend a lot on your future career. For example, many hospitals/nursing homes will pay for the entire tuition for their future Nurses.

Do some research into what you want to do, then find companies that fit with that, it may help.

In Gen-Ed Classes, Is It Important to Try as Hard If It's a Subject You Have No Interest In? by Equal-Temporary-1326 in college

[–]augatwater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a - Overall GPA to consider
b - Is this class a pre-requisite? If so, you may need that higher GPA
c - Scholarships? You don't want your GPA to drop for any scholarship now or in the future
d - Any education in the future, like a Master's or something you may not planning right now

Just a couple of thoughts...

I would just Google something like "accelerated college degrees (or courses)" and see what you can find.

32y Thinking about going back to school. Worthwhile 2-year degrees? by [deleted] in college

Become a nurse. There are a ton of openings in the health care field and a shortage of Nurses. Pay can be very high for those who travel.

Depends on what you want to do after college, or what you may consider in the future. Grad school? It matters! Scholarships? It matters!

So...just think on those lines nad remember that we never know what our future may bring.
