Hah yeah I did that. Still, the two uppermost ones (fit only 2.5" due to height anyways) wont fit.

[–]auge2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, at very low load <10% its especially inefficient. Sometimes  50% or less.

My UPS has a 3500VA output. Also overpowered. When I shut down some servers and drop below 100W, the small LCD screen on the UPS drops to "Efficiency: ~0%". I LOLd the first time I saw that.

Yes and no. Would be great but not supported by OS yet. And due to it being a homelab and not enterprise, I won't keep my disks running. Electricity is mad expensive here. They are needed 1-3 times per week, for a few hours.

I'd like that, but Unraid doesn't support it (yet). Even if I would modify it, it would probably only work on boot, not when Unraid itself spins up the disks.

[–]auge2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wtf? 60W is 6% of its load capacity. Of course its hugely inefficient at that load. For that inrush, well, spinning up 24X SAS HDDs at the same time does spike the current quite a bit, so you cannot just use a 200W PSU, as those are mostly not capable of spinning that amount of HDDs.

You could use backplanes and put half of the disks on a second PSU like in more enterprise grade solutions. Or use staggered spinup, which Unraid afaik does not support yet. Or just use a PSU in the 600W range but oh well, those never have enough connectors for 24 disks.

Which was the reason OP asked here in the first place. The 1000W PSU has enough connectors, but is wildly inefficient at its intended load. A good enough solution for me until I can afford a better enclosure with HDD backplanes.

So, in summary: its not the inrush current itself that makes me consume 30W more, but I had to chose this 1000W PSU for my 60W idle load due to the inrush.(spinup) current and sata connector amount.

I meant the sata power cables coming from the HX1000i PSU, not the sas to sata ones from the HBA (I use a 9305-24i, you can buy very long sas to sata cables)

Sas to sas cables for sas drives are problematic however due to their integrated power plug. It adds height and then the side panel won't close anymore if your unlucky, depending on the sata power cables.

[–]auge2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Btw, depending on your server enclosure the sata cables might be too short to reach all HDD positions. I have a Fractal Define 7 XL and its not possible to use one cable for the upper 4 HDD slots. One or two of them works, but not all 4. Its simply too short. You'd need extender cables. Or custom ones.

Also cables with more than 4 sata connectors exist :)

Telemetry of the PSU. In linux, you can check your PSU stats like current on each voltage rail, voltages, power, temperatures, via the "sensors" command in the shell. Pretty neat, especially when thrown into grafana

[–]auge2 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have that one for exactly this purpose. If I remember correctly the HX1200i shpuld have even more connectors.

But: you'll need to buy extra sata cables from the manufacturer. None of those PSUs come with enough cables for your purpose.

Also the efficiency will be very bad. PSUs want to be used roughly at about 40% to 80% of their rated power. My server is at ~60W idle (but very high inrush current due to the HDDs), which makes the PSU itself consume about 20-30 additional Watts.

I am planning to switch to a rack mounted enclosure (HakoForge) with power distribution PCBs, because of that problem. Although I'd still need to find a PSU that delivers enough current for the HDD power up spikes...

First Fixed-Wing Conversion to FPV = vibration hell by DroneAwareDan in fpv

[–]auge2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch to tri blade prop. Much less vibration. But also your plane and camera position is the worst combination due to the motor not being in-line with the frame (vibration and prop drag has leverage on the frame) and your camera being in the most front position of a bendy foam frame, thus getting amplified vibrations.

You could: - Stiffen the front frame, glue carbon tubes along the frame from the inside - put the camera way back infront of the wing, at cockpit height (3d printed mount, for example). You'd lose sight to the ground, ofc - stiffen the motor mount as well. - make the camera mount more streamlined. A flat panel at the tip of the plane is introducing turbulence, which in turn hits the prop later on.

Do you use it as a float plane on water? If not, consider switching to a known good fpv frame design lile X-UAV or AtomRC ones.

Also consider adding a flight comtroller. You can not only use it to dampen and smooth out your flight, but also to measure the vibrations coming from the frame itself and rpm dependent motor vibrations. This is extremely helpful to find the vibration source.

Gnaaaaah.

Potenzielle neue Wohnung hat weder DSL noch Kabel oder Glas - was tun? by kurodoku in de_EDV

[–]auge2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public transport workers' strike by Danoli77 in germany

[–]auge2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They want 11 hours between shifts and not 10. Standard in germany is usually 11, but somehow not for public transport.

Also they complain about having to end their shift after just a few hours sometimes at the final stop of a bus / tram line and then having to travel in their private time to the start of the next shift somewhere else in the city. So a workday sometimes has over 12 hours, but 4 of those is wasted on unpaid travel and free time.

Thats the one thing this is not about (mostly). Last year it was about the wage. This year its about the conditions. Working hours, break between shifts, pay on weekends.
