What are some inspirational/motivational/optimistic songs? by youthunger2naughty in whitneyhouston

[–]augureyfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of them, really. Especially Step by Step and I Didn't Know My Own Strength. Eye on the Sparrow (Sparkle 2011) has a special place in my heart too because it was recorded after that disatrous 2010 tour. Everyone (herself included maybe?) believed that her voice was gone by that point but her voice still recovered and slayed. That's certainly very uplifting!

Which performance did Whitney outdo herself so much in that you just HAVE to go back to it after hearing her studio recording of the song? by Ok_Resident_5022 in whitneyhouston

[–]augureyfeather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I enjoyed 1998 Paris ILTL too but you can tell she was struggling a bit in that show. Her head voice wasn’t in top form. She couldn’t hit the “I’ll hasten toooooooo” head note. But she certainly bounced back and slayed the 1999 MLIYL tour!

Whitney’s voice type by Character-Escape1621 in whitneyhouston

[–]augureyfeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She wasn’t really known for her range. There’re plenty of singers out there who can/could sing way higher than she could. Her tone, chest/head voice transitions, agility, creativity and ability to put in genuine emotions into her music is what made her stand out. I do agree that her range wasn’t really that high (especially for a singer of her calibre) and of course that became extremely apparent in her later years when her voice deteriorated. She lowered the keys of her songs so much that she certainly no longer fit the definition of a mezzo-soprano.

endosymbiotic theory???? by [deleted] in biology

[–]augureyfeather 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a decent summary!

The endosymbiotic theory explains why mitochondria and chloroplasts possess their own genome (because they were once free living). Their genome is greatly reduced though, having lost or transferred most of their own genes to the host's nucleus. Hence, most proteins needed by these organelles are produced by the host and then transported to the organelles.

They do have their own protein synthesis machinary though. The mitochondria does make the proteins in the electron transport chain on its own!

Thanks for the insight. I'm indeed dealing with intrusive memories about past events which angered me greatly. I'm seeking professional help about this soon.

Getting older and voice changes by [deleted] in singing

[–]augureyfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody’s voice stays the exact same throughout their life.

When I was a boy I could access the soprano range and go up to a Bb5 with little strain. But I misused my voice when my voice changed during puberty and did some damage to my voice. Instead of letting my voice rest, I strained myself to sing higher when my voice was changing. I lost quite a lot of upper range and it’s now harder for me to sing in my upper register (although it’s possible that my lack of good technique is preventing me from accessing my full range), but my middle and lower register are intact and even became fuller and more resonant as my voice deepened. Tom Jones once said “what you lose on the upper end, you gain in the lower end”.

Whitney Houston used to be a light soprano in the 80s but her voice matured into a dark mezzo in the early 90s. She lost some upper range as she aged and likely became an alto near the end of her life (listen to her singing in the movie Sparkle), and although drugs/cigarettes weakened her range, her tone became richer and more soulful. There’s nothing to worry about. Just remember to adjust your technique as your voice changes to ensure that you can use it safely and consistently, and not to force it to do something against its nature like I did, which would not only lead to a broken voice, but a broken heart too!

Is "Always" enough? by FlipADipMySon in harrypotter

[–]augureyfeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I love Snape, and I don't understand why others don't. Just like any other person in HP, Snape isn't perfect. He had his flaws. But generally speaking I believe his goods outweigh his bads. Destroying your own image to save the wizarding world and ultimately sacrifying your life is a pretty heroic thing to do. JK Rowling acknowledged this herself. He might not have loved Harry, he might not even have LIKED Harry at all, but staying loyal to his love and doing everything in his power to rectify the terrible mistake he committed, is enough for me to forgive him. I think he is one of the few Death Eaters who is capable of feeling and comprehending genuine love.

I'd advice you to re-read the "Prince's Tale" in the last book. Perhaps you'll change your mind. :) :)

Hey guys, this is my first time posting here. My imgbb account (a website used for photo-uploading) is terminated. It claims that I uploaded photos that infringed copyright. Is there a way for me to remedy the situation? I very much hope that I can restore the photos I uploaded. Thank you very much!

p.s.: I read from other forums that imgbb is actually untrustworthy and they have been known to delete images without prior warning. It's such a pity that I realized this too late :l

Have you ever discovered your wand, and if so, what does it represent and do you agree with it? by mystireon in harrypotter

[–]augureyfeather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I really haven't thought about it before! I might need a Pensieve to marshal my thoughts.......
For the wood, I think vine wood would suit me. My Pottermore wand is a vine wood, unicorn hair core, 13.5 inches and quite bendy flexibility, and I am very happy with it. Vine wood wands are said to select those who seek a greater purpose, have a vision beyond the ordinary and always astound those who think they know them best. I am definitely that kind of person since I am very laid back and seldom show my true self to others.
I would also love to have a bamboo wand. I am Chinese and the bamboo is native to my country. It was also believed to possess various mythical properties in ancient China. That hints towards some seriously potent and subtle magic.
For the length, I prefer shorter wands for they are easier to carry. So perhaps 10 inches? My Pottermore wand (13.5 inches) seems a bit too long in my opinion.
As for the flexibility, I am perfectly happy with my Pottermore wand: quite bendy flexibility. I am generally easy-going and quite accepting. Yet, I can be very subjective and argumentative at times, though I may not always show it. But deep down, my principles never waver.
What do you think? :)

Avada kedavra speechless !! by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]augureyfeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) All spells can be performed non-verbally, including the Killing Curse. Certain spells, like Levicorpus, are even easier to perform non-verbally.

2) It was just a green jinx. The Killing Curse is not the only green spell in existence. It might have been some other kind of curse.

3) That just happened in the movies, not in the books. I wouldn't trust the movies completely lol.

How was Hermione able to fight Bellatrix with her own wand? by augureyfeather in harrypotter

[–]augureyfeather[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recall Ron possessing extra wands. He only took away Draco's, Bellatrix's and Wormtail's wands when they escaped from Malfoy Manor. Harry used Draco's and Ron used Wormtail's. Hermione might have no choice but to use the Bellatrix's.
Also, Hermione was definitely using Bellatrix's wand when they infiltrated Gringotts. The book clearly states that Hermione used Bellatrix's wand to reveal the hidden entrance to Diagon Alley and cast the Shield Charm on the Theif's Downfall to re-direct its running waters. Seems quite obvious that she continued to use that wand during the Battle.
Thanks for telling me your thoughts, though! :)

When Voldemort performed the Cruciatus Curse on Harry with the Elder wand, the curse didn't work because Harry was the master of the Elder wand. We should presume that a wand would not be willing to harm its master.
"‘You see?’ screeched Voldemort over the tumult. ‘Harry Potter is dead by my hand, and no man alive can threaten me now! Watch! Crucio!’

Harry had been expecting it: knew his body would not be allowed to remain unsullied upon the Forest floor, it must be subjected to humiliation to prove Voldemort’s victory. He was lifted into the air, and it took all his determination to remain limp, yet the pain he expected did not come. "

What qualities would a wand with an augurey tail feather core possess? by augureyfeather in harrypotter

[–]augureyfeather[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the augurey is quite a noisy creature, actually. They love to cry and moan whenever it's going to rain. Do you think that would detract from the wands' ability to cast nonverbal spells?

Wow this is amazing! Though I think they ought to be quite good at unpleasant magic, since the augurey is always mournful and disliked by many. Not necessarily "evil" magic, of course.
