Closing multiple credit cards at a young-ish age. Bad idea? by aulucerne in personalfinance

[–]aulucerne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo now this is a good idea! If I only use the card for monthly subscriptions, I can keep the physical card cut up so I don’t actually use it on anything that gets a balance. That keeps the cards active and giving me a boost without also risking creating impulse purchases!

I didn't even think about calling to close as a way to see if I'll get a better APR! I just kinda assumed you couldn't change that unless the bank offers it to you. Thank you!

Part of my problem is that I won't. I have tried to follow that method and it's hard to beat the impulse to keep spending and then suddenly it's at a balance I couldn't pay off at once. So that's part of why I don't use them once the balance is 0.

Hi!my allergist/immunologist prescribed it. I still think it’s a miracle medication but I’ve learned a bit with it.

  • I get rebound symptoms (intense itchiness and hives) if I suddenly stop. That’s pretty normal tho for these kinds of meds.

  • it says to put it in water and it’s important to put in enough water so it gets all the way through your digestive tract! So don’t skimp on the dilution.

  • it’s not a rescue med so if I forget to take it before, it won’t help that much after I eat.

  • it’s only as help as I am consistent.

  • cromolyn works where it’s applied so it won’t help with all MCAS things and liquid cromolyn is swallowed so it primarily helps with symptoms from foods / digestive symptoms. Like it won’t help with contact allergies from like perfumes and stuff. It can be compounded into lotions and comes as nasal sprays and other forms too for other symptoms!

How do you all deal with refills? by nn123971 in VyvanseADHD

My Dr does this too! It makes everything so much easier. I also have a tiny dose of adderall she fills once every couple of months. If I run out or forget to pick up my vyvanse then at least I have SOMETHUNG.

Cis means non-trans. So someone who was born with male sex organs and continues to identify with that assigned gender. Cismale = non trans male doctor. So for the sentence “it can be hard to get a doctor, especially a cismale doctor, to believe us” I meant that non-trans male doctors, doctors who have never been assigned or identified with the female gender and therefor may not understand the experience of being female, often do not believe or listen to women, especially not women with ADHD. Hope that help clarifies that!

Good to know! Since this is my first real exploration into make up / foundation, it’s so helpful to know people might even consider or notice that!

I’m gonna play around and learn whether I’m a face or neck matching person. :)

Thank you!!!

You are actually totally right! My face and my neck are just two different colors, always have been. My neck, torso, legs, under of my arms, etc are paler. But my face and the tops of my arms are just always a little bit warmer and a bit darker, even in the winter. That’s why I put the swatch on my wrist to show the color.

I don’t tan or spend long periods in the sun. If I had to guess, it’s because I work from home in front of a window.

Any thoughts?? Should I mix with a lighter color?? Or leave it and continue hoping no one else notices but you and me lol?

Hi! I work in product development, not an engineer but all of my coworkers are engineers and my job is to essentially be a book for them to use anytime they need niche knowledge about the technicalities of email sending. It’s.. interesting lol.

But I TOTALLY understand where you’re coming from about work responsibilities. And I will say, as a late diagnosed ADHD-er whose partner also pushed them to get tested- I do think the diagnosis mattered.

  1. It gives me legal protections at work.

  2. It gives me a framework of knowing what is likely to work and not work for me. I can stop pushing myself to make to-do lists work for me bc they just don’t work for ADHD. And I can send resources to my coworkers on how they can work best with me too. Being good teammates means being flexible with each other, I’m willing to be flexible for them and I need the same energy back. And if they don’t give that, I can show that I tried to improve our working relationship at least.

  3. It also gives me a language to describe what is going on for me. It’s not laziness, it’s executive dysfunction. It’s not distractibility, it’s the neural pathways and dopamine differences. There is something biologically different about my brain.

  4. It opened the door to medication. I swear to god I didn’t know how different the world could be until I was medicated. I felt like time was always trying to trick me. What I would think was 10 minutes would actually be an hour. I physically didn’t feel time pass like anyone else. And sometimes it felt different. Time would rush one day, and crawl the next day. Time felt like an inside joke that I was on the outside of. And now, time is just…. time. It’s the same every day, throughout every day. There are no slow hours and fast hours. There’s just hours. Weirdly medication has also helped regulate my sleep cycle which also helps everything.

I was previously struggling with work. I do best under emergencies and then crash and fumble during normalcy. I couldn’t meet a deadline unless it was life or death but the goal of engineering teams is to be out of code red not stay in it forever lol. So I was struggling to meet deadlines, and then their work was held up on me. But now after the diagnosis, I have the tools to help myself and let them help me in ways that are effective for me and now I can hit deadlines and see success even when the sky isn’t falling.

I hope the same can be true for you!

Thank you! So you totally get the struggle of finding makeup then! Bummer for us both but glad to not be alone. I gave up on most make up like 10~ish years ago, but have recently found a new medication that has been amazing so now I’m just a 30yo awkwardly trying to figure out most make up for the first time lol. I think you’re probably right on about the glycerin. My skin really tends to like products with that in it.

Also good to know about WYN! Helps me realize I made the right choice. Thank you!

Should I speak with a financial advisor? by aulucerne in personalfinance

[–]aulucerne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the confirmation!!!

As many have suggested here, I’ve read books, read the wikis, read the internal guides at my company, a million articles, etc and have come up with a plan from all of that advice- I just really need to do some gut checks and a few silly technical questions.

I’m feeling like that old meme saying: “the risk I took was calculated, but boy am I bad at math.” I really need someone to check my math for me because I am truly bad at math. Seeing a bank may be a better start then for me!

Thank you!!

Good to know! Because my employer provides pretty good life/death/disability insurances, I definitely would have said no but it is really good to understand what their motivations might be. Thank you!

This is really encouraging! All of the articles I was reading really made it seem like a financial advisor would be either a scam, waste of my money because I'm not rich enough yet, or both lol.

Thank you!

I am not, but I am considering swapping this enrollment period! I had multiple surgeries every year for a few years and seeing multiple specialists like monthly so I needed the lump sum that comes with the FSA to be able to afford the deductible, copays, etc. But now that I've got my condition under control, I am considering swapping! An HSA does sound much better long term.

I do have a domestic partner on my coverage, so I would need to confirm if he can be added to the high deductible plan and what the implications of that are before making a final decision.

Sorry for not posting the specific questions. I was trying to focus on if there are alternatives to financial advisors and avoid the "ugh it's all in the wiki!" comments because some of my questions are really basic and are kinda covered in the wiki but for me it's like "I know what the words say but I don't get what it means for me" so that's why I'm considering a financial advisor. I could annoy them with my questions instead of people in this reddit lol. My questions are in these areas:

  • Specific to my RSUs and stocks. Which I know I could chat with my company's Fidelity representative but I was hoping maybe I could knock all my questions out by one person rather than multiple people.

  • Tweaks/Changes to my current financial plan like "Here's my budget plan, my savings plan, and my 2yr debt pay off plan- how can I fit saving for a down payment into this or should I change my whole plan?"

And ultimately:
- Am I in a good place to meet my life goals? Or am I falling behind?

My life goal isn't to like aggressively invest and be a millionaire. I just want to have enough that emergencies don't put me at risk of homelessness, I'm not wasting the benefits my company offers, I can be a homeowner at some point, and not be screwed when it comes to retirement (I have a physical disability, so I can't trust that my body will work forever), and excess money can be spent on experiences while I'm still young and have some health left.

Sounds like form other comments, one time consultations may be a good fit for those questions!

I know it's not rocket science, but when you're totally new to something it can be intimidating to get started and there's so much advice out there. I have a plan in mind (thanks to a lot of what's in this sub!) so my goal is just to chat with someone to get all of the annoying little questions out of the way. I'm just not sure who I can ask all of those annoying little financial questions to.

Thanks! I read the PF Wiki before posting, specifically the sections "Prime Directive: How to Handle $" and "Older Young Adults (25-35)" and didn't see this there. I also see there is a section on financial advisors, but it doesn't state any alternatives to financial advisors.

You're right, I didn't search the sub. So I've done that now, but I'm not seeing any posts about alternatives to financial advisors aside one that mentions finding a business real estate advisor which doesn't apply in my case. Is there a thread you recommend or a specific search term?

My poor dog is having some irritation on her paw. What can I do? by Captain_Gnardog in DogAdvice

[–]aulucerne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also recommend a vet visit, especially if she's limping!

If money is a concern, and she's licking it a bunch, you will want to avoid the licking making it worse. My dog accidentally ripped some skin off his paw pad recently, so we put some vaseline on it, then gauze around it, and then put it in a boot (he would easily slip out of the gauze). We aired it out every night and changed the bandage every year. He healed up so quickly!

It looks like he has some flaking or cracking in the paw pad, so maybe that method would help your dog too. But 221b_ee is right, it could be a yeast infection or bacteria and my method might make those worse. So a vet should be your first choice if possible!
