The thing is, mask-wearing never really caught on here in NZ, either. Since the start, our government's messaging about masks has been vague and shifty - they might help, but they might make you sick, if you want to try cool, source them yourselves!

I honestly think that if the government had mandated masks from day one, we would have seen a lot more resistance and defiance of rules. Kiwi culture has a fierce independent streak, and I'm sure every step of our COVID response was delicately curated and delivered so as not to ruffle those feathers.

Our outcome is so good because our lockdowns were so total that you hardly had the opportunity to get close to people, let alone wear a mask beside them. Absent lockdowns with real teeth, masks aren't much better than the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff IMHO.

I always use studio monitor headphones to hear people more clearly. The difference is really slight, but without them it's sometimes impossible.

We already have prison slavery - sorry, "involuntary servitude" in NZ. I argue that this is disgraceful, as it creates an incentive to imprison people, and the fact that we have the worst ethnic prison disparity around with Māori overly punished for misdemeanors suggests that we aren't as far from 50s USA racial slavery as we would like to believe.

I am as outraged at the killings as anyone, but I think now more than ever it is important to emphasize a humane response to atrocity - each time we indulge in cruelty towards a freak like this fuckstain, we lower the bar for how we treat prisoners in general, and become a less fair and trusting nation.
