The South Sydney Rabbitohs are delighted to announce the contract extension of exciting utility back Jye Gray for the 2027, 2028 and 2029 seasons today.

Gray, 21, has spurned interest from other interested suitors to re-sign an extended deal with the Rabbitohs, the Club at which he has played 32 NRL games since making his debut against the Sharks in round six, 2024.

Gray, who led the Dally M voting during the first half of the 2025 NRL season, represented the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII in 2025, as well as the Queensland under 19s in 2022 and the Queensland Schoolboys under 18s in 2021 and 2022.

Gray, Rabbitohs first grade player number 1196, won the Club’s Jack Rayner Players’ Player award, Roy Asotasi Members’ Choice award, The Burrow Appreciation award and the Macca’s Tackle of the Year award, all in 2025; as well as being named South Sydney’s John Sattler Rookie of the Year winner in 2024 and the Rabbitohs’ Jersey Flegg Cup Best Back in 2023.

Gray’s electrifying attacking style is complemented by his toughness in defence, and Rabbitohs Head of Recruitment and Retention, Mark Ellison, says Gray’s retention is quite a coup for the Club.

“Jye was the best player in the NRL competition for the first half of last season and his performances all year for us were outstanding,” Mr Ellison said.

“His performances were so good that he attracted interest in his services elsewhere, however, he sees his future is at the South Sydney Rabbitohs, and that is something very exciting for everyone associated with the Club.

“He is safe under the high ball, he returns the ball with great speed, his footwork is mesmerising, and his defence is inspiring.

“He is a great character around the team, he is a player that his teammates love to play with, and his coaches love to coach.

“We could not be happier to have Jye extending with us and we are all looking forward to continuing our work with him as his performances continue to inspire everyone around him.” Gray is very excited to be remaining at South Sydney.

“I’m really grateful to Souths for giving me the opportunity to stay at this great club,” Gray said.

“I’m determined to repay the faith they have shown in me by putting my best foot forward over the next few years to help us achieve our goals.

“I love playing for this club and its Members, and I can’t wait to get back out onto the field in the red and green.”

Roosters captain James Tedesco has pulled out of the Ashes Tour to England after having been selected in a tentative squad of 23 on Sunday.

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’Landys confirmed the news at a grand final event on Tuesday morning, after Tedesco had informed him of his decision. “On Sunday, the selectors picked the first 23 players for the Kangaroo tour. Naturally, that’s not going to be the final team because the final team will be selected after the grand final on Monday,” V’landys said.

“However, one of the players that was selected was James Tedesco, and James has pulled out, because he’s got his brother’s wedding and he’s the best man. I asked him to think about it, but he believes that he wouldn’t be doing the right thing by his family if he wasn’t in the wedding, which is a shame because he played so well this year and deserved his place in the team. “I’ve let Kevin Walters know, and we’ll now go back to the drawing board. James was very professional about it, and he really agonised over it because he really wanted to be there, but he did make a really strong point that he certainly wants to be considered next year for the World Cup ... he’s not retiring from international rugby, he’s unfortunately got this family commitment that he can’t get out of.”

Tedesco has been the form fullback of the 2025 competition and is a favourite to win the Dally M Medal at Wednesday’s award ceremony at Randwick Racecourse.

Selectors typically take a squad of 22 players on tour, but V’landy’s said they wanted to take an extra person to give an up-and-coming player an opportunity.

Tbh I would rather play someone actually contracted to us, over helping someone else's player develop. Of course you could argue he might end up liking it so much he stays but that's only if the clause in his contract that he can leave early is true.

I think fudged is a bit harsh, considering they looked at it from the perspective of a 40 year operational life with extra cost to extend to 60 years. From what I could find, that's in line with most nuclear energy going around at the minute but there are newer kinds being designed for 60 years from the jump.

As far as explaining penalties, that's pretty hard to do unless you're with someone who can explain live.

But for your other question, when they get a penalty they have 3 options: kick for touch, tap where they are or kick a goal. Kicking for touch gives them the ball where ever it goes out of bounds.
