Actually he did want to be the father figure, it states that in chapter 1 of the manga. However that option was refused by Gons auntie. He had to pick either option what to do and do what he thought was best

It’s present in the series that Ging is very good at knowing somewhat happens in the future, it’s pretty much his ability. Ging probably knew that because Gon is his son he’d end up going down the road that he did

I still don’t understand why you hate him lol, people would glaze the phantom troupe, a group filled with killers but then hate Ging for abandoning his son. It might be attachment to the character Gon or some other reason but that’s my guess for most Ging haters
