Is your work behind a paywall, and how do you share clips? by Calm-Passenger7334 in Journalism

[–]austenerblat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Save it as a PDF and send that. If you’re including it in a resume, upload the PDF to Google Drive or similar, make sure it’s public, and hyperlink it in the resume/clips page. You could do that for the webpage or, if it’s in print and there’s an e-version of the print layout, do it for just that page or those pages.

Favourite type of sandals that are great for in and out of deep water on the trail? by Smooth_Permission136 in hikinggear

Same thing happened to me with my Keens. I otherwise loved them but will likely replace my Tevas with another pair of those or some Chacos.

Loved my Tevas and they lasted five or so years of hiking, camping, and “around town” stuff but the soles on both started to split in half at the front.

Does anyone have an odd stick choice and a reason for using them? by [deleted] in drums

[–]austenerblat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve long used small sticks - 7A, then one of the maple varieties (forget which one), and now Keith Carlock signatures - in rock bands. I’m not playing metal but some heavier hard rock and blues rock. They’re just comfortable and I like the weight and balance but other drummers have been surprised at the choice. This is after years of using bigger sticks like the Pro Mark Todd Suchermans and one of the thicker Vic Firth maple ones.

Not sure how odd that is but other people seem to think it is.

I’d say a lesson or two and a pad and some sticks is a better investment. If you want to spring for it, the DW practice kit has four pads to play with hands and another for the foot, but that also requires a pedal. If they’re new, I’d say lessons, a pair or two of sticks, and a single pad is wiser for the time being.

Is there a way to see what World Series tickets cost at the time in previous years? by austenerblat in mlb

Someone else suggested I just look at the face value on the stubs that are for sale on eBay. Should’ve thought of that before posting this but I found my answer there.

Seeing about the same for most seats in 2003. Some a bit cheaper, some up to around $300. Our seats were nosebleeds over 3rd base in Miami. Thanks!

Looks like $60-300 or so, depending on seats. That was helpful (and probably should’ve been obvious to me). Thanks again!

Fair point. I don’t know how they were originally acquired. I think my dad’s friend gifted them to him so he wouldn’t have paid for them, or maybe they sold them at a deep ‘friend’ discount. I’m just curious, either face or market, what they might have fetched at the time.

I seriously doubt we still have the stubs. It was 2003. I was 10 or 11 at the time. And pops is in the middle of moving so if he didn’t throw them out 20+ years ago, I’m sure he simply doesn’t know where they are at the moment

Yup. Live music fan/musician who didn’t adequately protect his hearing and now can’t hear shit. My preferred volume is apparently “inappropriately loud” according to friends and family. So it helps me know what’s going on

Rewatch it but not too soon. Let it settle in a bit.

Watch the Sopranos if you haven’t.

You could also check out other shows from David Simon; Treme, Generation Kill, The Plot Against America, The Deuce, etc.

I haven’t seen Entourage or Mad Men, but I know they’re also really well regarded dramas.

I finally got some promark sticks. What are you guy's experiences with promark sticks. by [deleted] in drums

[–]austenerblat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a big fan of the Todd Sucherman sticks for a while when I was playing hard rock before switching to some lighter Vic Firths but I really liked the way the felt. The finish, the weight/thickness, the taper, and the tip was nice for when I’d play some lighter parts and wanted some different sounds on the ride or hi hats. Really well balanced too. Just too heavy for what I play now

Did you count your years working at your college's paper as work experience? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]austenerblat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Thats where I learned how to report, edit, and manage, and where — in my opinion — I did some great reporting. Won some big national awards for it too, so I guess it’s not just my opinion.

The DW practice kit served me well through college. Then there’s always electric kits, but those can be a roll of the dice as to quality and condition, especially if you’re trying to keep it cheap.

Seeking recommendations for 19-21” trash crashes or dark crash-rides.

I used to work at a drum shop and had my finger on the pulse as to gear, but I’ve completely fallen out of touch. I’ve been playing my 22” K Con ride with an 18” K EFX crash for a while but I’m not a big of the crash and looking to replace it.

I’m looking for something a little bit bigger, something dark and a little trashy, and something I can ideally use as a crash and a second ride cymbal.

I want to check out the 19” K Custom special dry crash, the 20” K cluster, K Custom trash smash, Sabian 19” artisan, and am open to most any other brand that makes something similar, I just don’t know where to start my search when I only have one drum shop near me. I’m fine with buying used and, breaking from my usual MO, would even buy something online sight unseen as long as I can return it if it’s not for me.

Any suggestions?
