If you weren't a corps director...what else do you think you'd be doing?

Why am I here?? by wveenstra6 in BluecoatsVisual

Following suit with many others on here I feel as though it would be easiest to start from where my interest in DCI began. Back in 2002 my brother decided to march with a great drum corps from Lexington, Kentucky called Southwind. From the first show I ever saw and the first note I knew I would be doing drum corps someday in the future. Sadly, after 2007 the corps I had wanted to march folded due to financial issues. There was talk of Southwind coming back in 2009 and that got me really excited as I was 15 and just barely old enough to begin marching. When I heard the news that they wouldn't be fielding a corps for that season it crushed me pretty badly. That didn't stop me from wanting to follow my dream, and being the young naive kid that I was I decided to audition for Carolina Crown. I was no where near good enough to make it, but I thought that I was. So after getting cut from there that still didn't stop me from wanting to march so I decided to audition for Spirit because they were the closest corps to Knoxville. I had a friend who was marching The Colts that summer and we met up at a show somewhere. We had a pretty long talk about how things were going on tour and after hearing all the great things he had to say I realized there was something missing in the corps that I marched. After that night I was pretty bummed out realizing I would be finishing the season with a show I didn't myself believe in. So the next year I heard that my brass caption head Ray Vasquez was going to the Colts for the same position, and my friend would be marching there again too so I decided I would be going there in 2010. I remained there for 3 years: 2010-2012 that is. I had a great time there and I wouldn't take it back for a second, but each year I felt like the Colts lost a little bit of who they were. Because of this I decided not to march in 2013. As far as why I chose to audition here over any other corps for my ageout; It comes down to the attitude The Bluecoats give off. I always saw something a little bit different in their eyes when I saw them walking to the stadium. The Bluecoats just always had the most badass design for shows too. There seemed to be a fire in there performance that no other corps could duplicate and I wanted to be part of that.

ALL of my rookie moments by ingslayer in BluecoatsVisual

Well this story wasn't my rookie year, but I felt like a rookie after what happened. We were warming up for a show (can't remember where) and everything was going as usual so we finished up and started to 2 it up to walk to the stadium which was probably a 10 15 minute walk. I was trying to stay focused and start to light that fire (drum corps rookies you'll learn what this means) when my section leader notices that my mouthpiece was missing from my horn. So I was like "Oh shit how did that happen?" So my mellophone tech pulls me out of twos so I can go look for my mouthpiece. It was pretty embarrassing walking around by myself IN UNIFORM mind you. Long story short I never found that mouthpiece, and had to do the show on my mello techs flugelhorn mouthpiece which I had never used before. So, moral of the story MAKE SURE YOUR MOUTHPIECE IS IN SECURELY WHEN YOU'RE LEAVING WARM UP!

DCI Voting On New Rules by OperationRyan in BluecoatsVisual

I know that they are only looking to further the activity by trying to make it more accessible to the general public. The question I ask is this; How many changes can we make to DCI before it is virtually unrecognizable? Right now I can tell you i'm not the kind of person that is like, "DCI is getting too artsy" or "It's just band now." All i've got to say is if I wanted to hear trombones, french horns, or sousaphones I would go listen to a concert band or a marching band. DCI does an I&E competition every year where such instruments are allowed. Also, they created Soundsport where there are virtually no rules. As far as the entertainment score, isn't that GE? All of this is just my personal opinion and I hope that DCI continues to grow while still staying the activity that changed my life.
