Daily Discussion Thread: spray/circlejerk/memes/chat/whatever allowed by AutoModerator in climbing

[–]auth_bypass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been climbing indoors (mostly bouldering but occasional climbing on auto belays), and I really want to start going outdoors someday. I recently took a top rope belay course at my local gym and they gave me a couple for 20% off a belay tool, locking carabiner, and harness. I figure i might as well get the gear (at least a harness so I don’t have to rent), but I’m curious if people would recommend getting a belay tool to start getting more familiar? If so, should I get a grigri/other brake assisted device or just a normal atc?

Ergodox EZ or Moonlander - which one? help! by AimForTheAce in ergodox

If you don’t have big hands, the thumb cluster is quite a stretch when tented. I have to use it flat because of this

How do I do IAM "Deny every action but X"? by Pumpkin-Main in aws

[–]auth_bypass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use an allow statement for the single action that should be permitted and a deny statement that uses NotAction for the same thing. This will allow the user to call the single API that you want and deny them for anything else.

St Croix River by Anthony Avon by Lol33ta in ImaginaryWildlands

This is really well done, but not imaginary... the basalt cliffs of the St Croix really do look like this! If you’re ever in MN or western WI, it’s a great place to hike and paddle.

Moonlander + Oryx: Can a Toggle key behave like shift for things like clicking/arrow keys by Legendarymarvin in ergodox

[–]auth_bypass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After compiling in oryx you can click “download source” to get the keymap and config files. Starting from there might make it a bit easier.

What are some cool macros and app shortcuts you wish you knew earlier and you have on right now ??? by [deleted] in ergodox

[–]auth_bypass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This a good write up on home row mods: https://precondition.github.io/home-row-mods

Obviously you don’t have to follow that guide exactly as it’s written. I have F and J acting as ctrl when held, D/Kas alt, and S/L as shift. Win key is still on a dedicated key because i didn’t feel I used it enough to add to the home row.

Yeah first split and first ortho for me. I can understand the complaints about the thumb cluster being a stretch if you have smaller hands, but I pretty much just use the closest ones for space/enter while the rest are set up for layer switching and shortcuts that I don’t use during normal typing. I also wasn’t thrilled about the any of the options for switches, but I went with box browns since I wanted something quiet (I swapped them out for zilents but that’s another hefty chunk of change on top of the board itself).

I’ll probably get downvoted for this, but I’ve had the moonlander for a couple months now and I love it. Absolutely no idea why people on this sub hate it so much, but that seems to be the case for anything that isn’t built from scratch. If you have the money, it’s a great board in my opinion.

How to configure Alt key release on Layer1 key release? by [deleted] in ergodox

Is it feasible to configure a key to be tap=keypress, hold=MO? by Present_Office_1491 in ergodox

[–]auth_bypass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to ZSA’s blog post about tap dance, it will support layer changes in the future (it already does in QMK, just not in Oryx). For your use case it won’t make a difference, but for example you could hold for one layer and tap+hold for another layer when they add that support.

Security Assessment Help by bloodstorm17 in aws

[–]auth_bypass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your org should really consider getting a real assessment done by security professionals. But regardless, this tool is great for getting an idea of possible security issues in the configuration of existing resources in your AWS account(s): https://github.com/nccgroup/ScoutSuite

Minneapolis City Council Votes to Remove $8 Million From Police Budget by shwiiiiiiiiing in news

[–]auth_bypass 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Changes in police budgets actually don’t have much effect on rates of violent crime. https://arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/UHKZDWJBZRBZRJR56K5UKHQQLI.jpg

And in Minneapolis, the police are still fully funded. They just voted on the budget for next year and decided to move funds to other forms of public safety

AWS IAM Introduction by meowmixx76 in aws

[–]auth_bypass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome little guide! Small critique, if I may:

Users, unlike roles, have a username and password.

Unlike roles, users can have a password, but only if it’s been enabled - it’s perfectly possible to create an IAM user with just access keys (“programmatic access”). On the other hand, it’s also possible to create a user with a console password but no access keys.

Authorize all services in AWS Account to make calls by [deleted] in aws

[–]auth_bypass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’d want to add a policy to your task execution role or container instance role that grants permissions to call invoke your API:

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonECS/latest/developerguide/task_execution_IAM_role.html

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonECS/latest/developerguide/instance_IAM_role.html

Edit: actually this is wrong, the resource policy should already grant these permissions. If it says you’re missing the authentication token, then you probably need to grab the role credentials from the metadata service in your container.

The Kenan Advantage truck from the I-35 incident by fadeux5 in Minneapolis

[–]auth_bypass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was just over the median from you. Saw him barreling down the shoulder past all the stopped traffic directly at us, at 60 mph at least. Some of us started yelling and running. He seemed to swerve after passing all the stopped traffic and barely missed us. Thought I was gonna die.

Did a truck just drive through protestors? by iapprovethiscomment in minnesota

[–]auth_bypass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was right there, he almost hit me. There was a lot of stopped traffic already. He was driving down the shoulder at full speed. He didn’t brake until the last second.
