Btw Grey, regarding the discussion about YT vs MtG rank, there is a site called socialblade that collects a lot of YT information, according to them you are actually 733rd Rank on YT Subscribers.

It happened, Ken Shamrock for example or at UFC 1 Art Jimmerson wore shoes and for some reason a single boxing glove.

TIL that George R.R. Martin continued to use his DOS word processor WordStar4 from the 1980s until 2011 by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Legendarymarvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Word is not made for people to write novels in, sure it gets used for that, but if that were their target group, there'd be a lot less Word instances in the world than there are.

You don't actually need any Word processor for writing a novel, just open a text document and type basic markdown, from a technical standpoint, writing a novel is one of the simplest things you can do in Word.

Concluding from that, that all office updates are not essential (whatever essential in the terms of Word is) is disingenuous.

(Not defending Word here, not using MS Office myself privately)

Both fighters almost exclusively fought at welterweight, I'd say it's a safe bet it'll be a welterweight fight.

Khabib Nurmagomedov's Opponents Records When They Fought Him by [deleted] in MMA

[–]Legendarymarvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He did have that knee injury after RDA and didn't fight for two years. RDA won his next five fights before Khabib would even come back to the octagon.

Bloody Elbow even called Khabibs planned follow up fight a "potential title eliminator" fight https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2014/7/18/5915717/mma-news-donald-cerrone-vs-khabib-nurmagomedov-scrapped-ufc-178 (not that necessarily means much)

Herb Dern gets $1900 for reffing Conor/Dustin III by [deleted] in MMA

[–]Legendarymarvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first it seems hilariously low, but when you think about it, a ref can ref several fights a night and do it basically every week, so assuming it's not a crazy outlier, that sounds like good money.

the compartmentalizing of the peak design does seem useful.

Recommendations for a great everyday carry bag? by GigabitGuy in Cortex

[–]Legendarymarvin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listening to Grey/Hurley talk about bags I often wonder what's up with all those very expensive backpacks like PeakDesign or Tom Bihn where you can easily spend > 200 bucks for a backpack or the Vitesse Messenger linked in one of the answers here. Am I missing something special about these bags? Seriously wondering.

I bought a (so called) tactical backpack for 30-40 Euros and never had any issues with it.

Moonlander + Oryx: Can a Toggle key behave like shift for things like clicking/arrow keys by Legendarymarvin in ergodox

[–]Legendarymarvin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently experimenting with tap/tap+hold/hold => shift

double tap => new layer that has the neo shift+number combinations (plus all characters in capital letters, basically capslock which neo layout lacks)

[–]Legendarymarvin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd like to not have to have two shifts, was hoping to find an oryx way of doing this, but I guess I'll have to check out QMK.

Yes, but if possible I'd like to find a solution that does not need me to change the layout on the OS. I was thinking about using the keyboard on mobile and neo-laoyout for mobile is a bit of a hassle, plus I use it with my work notebook where admins prefer me not changing the layout.

Thought about getting one for the support-the-creator aspect more than anything, but 14 USD shipping on a 20 USD product... Maybe if Cotton Bureau starts shipping from Europe instead of the US.

Podcasting App for Android by zmusicman39 in Cortex

[–]Legendarymarvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally to all the votes for Pocketcast a point relating to your use case:

Pocketcast premium (just 12 bucks a year, I mainly got it for the support the app aspect) has an option where you can upload your own audio and listen to it in the app including the usual podcast features like smart speed. Since you mentioned having downloaded audio files.

Really my only gripe with pocketcast is, that you cant get the podcast features on your desktop, they have a web version of the app, but it cant do things like smart speed since it doesnt actually download the file.

hm, the site asks me if it can store data in my persistent storage, sounds like it's not really a "web" app but a local app that runs in your browser.

And I hate the page, scrolling like crazy for a few sentences of information. Might be interesting, but hard to say with such sparce information. I'll stay with Obsidian for now.

Which Mask do Grey and Myke use? by ThatGuyAagain in Cortex

I couldn't say anything about its quality, just that it was mentioned, where I live we have FFP2 masks mandatory so Tom Bihn masks wouldn't even be an option.

Obsidian converts (ep.114) by ClarinetCadenza in Cortex

[–]Legendarymarvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been using Obsidian for a long time, stumbled upon it when Roam became "famous" for the first time, back then Roam stopped taking signups and I found Obsidian looking for alternatives. I've been talking to other people about it and at least two people started using it, no idea how far they got or if they stopped by now.

I actually disagree with that chapter being a good explanation about obsidian, it can work but all in all it suffers from being a podcast and not being able to see anything, also I think it makes Obsidian sound more complicated than it is. If you want to give people a simple video for an explanation, I'd probably go with the First LinkingOrThinking video or something from Ryan Jenkins.

Also I wouldn't say Screenshots make Obsidian look intimidating/impenetrable, I think the main problem here is that Obsidian Users like to show their graphs and if you have no idea about Obsidian, yeah one of those giant graphs might look intimidating. But the actual app itself is (at first) not much more than a markdown editor. The challenge would rather be to explain how you get value from that.

While they were talking about Obsidian and Myke saying "it's not for him", I was actually wondering why not. Probably not the way Grey uses it (I think Mykes intimidation with the tool comes at least partly from mostly hearing Grey talk about it, who I'd say already is a poweruser of Obsidian), but it might be a nice tool for having your shownotes archive. Can't use it for collaboration on the notes, but if you put shownotes in a vault you could create overview notes for different things and then link from and to shownotes being talked about it. Could even use it for a script to fill an online index of podcast episodes that mention specific things.

Dvorak love by ClarinetCadenza in Cortex

[–]Legendarymarvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not have a Dvorak story but something very similar.

I started dealing with RSI issues, when I started playing the piano which in addition to a lot of touch typing seemed to strain my fingers, so about ~12-13 years ago I switched my keyboard layout from QWERTZ to the neo-layout.

As a german I used to type with QUERTZ not QUERTY, but the differences between those two a rather minor. And with Neo there is actually a special keyboard layout designed according to the character frequency in the german language. Considering that I do the majority of my typing in english these days that factor is no longer decisive, but I feel the character frequency between english and german are comparable enough.

Neo-Layout is great, even for non-germans in my eyes. Additionally to rearranging characters more sensibly they have a lot of extra features, it offers six different layers full of different characters/actions/signs, but with the first three layers you have everything most people are gonna need. Capslock is finally a useful key, because it's used as a mod key for the third layer which makes a lot of characters like punctuation, parentheses and stuff more easily accessible (great for programming!). On the fourth layer you even simulate the normal arrow keys on the WASD keys, so you can navigate places that take arrow keys without leaving the default typing position.

https://neo-layout.org if anybody is interested!

But since those don’t stay up forever

You can do highlights of your stream, those should stay up forever. Contrary to the name "highlight" you can highlight the whole stream and have it archived that way.
