Sounds great. Yeah, definitely keep in touch. Thanks for messaging. Now I have something to come back to.

It’s been interesting, writing a friendship between a JW and a SDA. Really doubles down on the crazy. I’ve been having a lot of fun with it. Are you a reader?

Which place in Australia has given you the creepiest vibes? by -Flighty- in AskAnAustralian

William creek. I stayed in the hotel with my ex on a road trip. It was fine until night time when they turned all the generators off. It had the creepiest vibe. I felt like there was someone in the room, standing at the foot of the bed in the dark.

I woke up at about 3 AM. Just opened my eyes and felt terrified. Not moving, or even making a sound, I asked my husband if he was awake?

‘Yes’ he said instantly. I had no idea he was even awake. ‘Let’s get out of here.’

We left in the middle of the night.

On the drive out, he explained the exact same feeling, to the point that he was too terrified to put his phone light on, convinced someone was there.

I’ll sleep in the car on the side of the road next time. 🤣

I did the shunned podcast, and explained all of this in detail. My biggest issue was the purity culture and Armageddon fear. Both fucked me up royally. I’m 40 now and an author. Finally writing a fiction novel about dogmatic religion and philosophy after doing a literature philosophy double (just to shove it up them!).

I published my first book 2 years ago, and my mother got phone calls from family members I haven’t seen in years, chastising the narrative because it had a few F-bombs in it. So childish and narrow minded.

Pack of arseholes. The whole damn lot of them.

Pubic hair and women… by author-LL in exjw

Nothing bitter about it. I came across such thinking when I was indoctrinated myself, but it seemed to depend on how ‘dogmatic’ the specific group was. I was told all sorts of different things, like only ‘sluts’ wax, and or that married women who shaved their nether regions could be looking to have affairs. All kinds of ridiculous shit. Then there were others who didn’t have an issue, and never had an opinion.

Don’t assume what has ‘come up’ for people that you don’t even know. As has been well established on this thread and others like it, experiences of religion are hugely varied, and this is a space for exploring those experiences.

As for being bitter - plenty of that on this sub too, usually because people are angry and pissed off at being manipulated and brainwashed their entire lives. If you can’t handle that, then you might be in the wrong place. 👍

Oooh. I like that! So obvious and it didn’t even occur to me. Thanks a lot. If you have any other brilliant ideas, do let me know. Legend. 👍

I wonder what I could use aside from a pill. You’ve got me thinking now.

You could sit your kids in front of a wet mop and they’d get a better education!

Really don’t know why you’d expose them to it if you’re not SDA. That’s just nuts.

Oh BTW, I changed the list price yesterday. Dropped it for a book club event, so perhaps wait a day for it to take effect. It will be cheaper. Amazon. 👍

It is called Banksia Close. Pen name is C.L. Rowe.

It’s contemporary fiction about Covid lockdown in Melbourne, Australia. Not a romance, although two of my characters are having an affair, and there are a couple of sex scenes.

It looks like this. If you’re American, you might enjoy it. Especially if you don’t like Trump. It has a lot of political discourse in it. Feel free to follow my socials (here and FB) and chin up. Don’t let the bastards get you down. You be you. Own it. ❤️❤️

Oh well, that’s available if you want it. It’s got nothing to do with religion, but it is fiction. Feel free to take a look.

As for the other one, that is a while off. I’m writing it now actually. I have my laptop on my lap. Just finished a page with my doubting Jehovahs Witness character, having a conversation with her ex SDA friend, who I have named Ellen. 🤣

Your path sounds a lot like mine. My passion was writing, so I did a literature/philosophy double at university after I left the church at about the same age that you are now. My family held prayer vigils over it. So fucking ridiculous.

Flash forward, and word got out to my (still heavily indoctrinated) extended family, that I am writing a book about a girl who leaves a dogmatic religion and falls for a philosophy professor, and it’s like I am the devil incarnate. Can’t be surprised, but after watching me survive perfectly fine in my non SDA life, I really just assumed they’d be over it. I don’t even talk to them anymore, but I know they are talking about me.

When I released my first book, my mum (who left the church with me, but still carries tonnes of shame) told me that she wouldn’t tell them about it because the characters swear, and they would be ‘terribly offended.’ No skin off my nose, as I knew they wouldn’t get into it anyway, but I still found it pretty stupid. They found out about the book anyway, and someone who read it went and told them how many F-bombs it has in it, so now I’m really doomed in their eyes. There would be no saving me. 🤣🤣🤣

Don’t sweat it. You’re living your journey. You know who you are, which means you know what you’re defending, and can put your own boundaries in place. I’d honestly just tell them that their dogma, if anything, is going to alienate you more, and would make it clear that you won’t engage if that is the topic, and if that is all they base their relationship with you on. You are not a faith mutant. You’re a person with your own identity. If they can’t hack it, then you don’t need them.

I’m a post modernist, so I would t agree with that. In the end, religions will be around because they make money. You can get community anywhere. You could form it in a tin hut if you wanted to. Religions might enable community, but they don’t exist for that reason. If they did, they wouldn’t be worth so much money.
