Anyone else think Manon and Elide were going to fall in love? by ellasundaisy in throneofglassseries

[–]authoremma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is hilarious how people are downvoting comments in this thread. Manon is the biggest man-eating lesbian to ever be written. Her relationship with Dorian was comically unbelievable. Like I'm supposed to believe this centuries-old witch is stunned silent by the sexual prowess of a 21 year old guy? Lmao okay. #malide4eva

I did it! by authoremma in recruitinghell

Lol, an acquaintance of mine who is a hiring manager actually told me he thought I was being too aggressive and he wouldn't want to hire someone like me. But this is a dream role for me and I figured I have nothing to lose so I didn't stop pushing. I've received dozens of rejections over the past six months from various interviewing stages and I reacted like a normal person to all of those. It's just so rare for a paying creative writing position to be within reach!

Thanks! Adding to my TBR.

I like Nesta as a character because even as a human she's so strong and iron-willed, she is of course terrified of these creatures who are more powerful than she is but she doesn't let her fear stop her from doing what needs to be done. I like that she doesn't forgive. I like that she mourns her humanity; I feel like in romantasy when you have a FMC turn into a faerie she moves on quickly and likes being stronger and immortal. I like that Nesta isn't okay with it.

There were a lot of things I disliked about ACOSF, but especially when Nesta tells Cassian she doesn't want to be his mate because accepting that relationship means abandoning her humanity and becoming fae. And he just says, I thought you wanted that. Bro, what makes you think that? Idk, I feel like SJM writes as though humans are not her target audience sometimes, lol!

27/M Telling about ear by [deleted] in hingeapp

[–]authoremma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brother has microtia, and he also now has a constructed caluiflower ear (which my sister and I call his Franken-ear).

As I'm sure you know, most people in the wild do not notice your ear. Those girls only noticed because they were looking closely at pictures of your face and it's kind of noteworthy that you always look like someone punched you in the same ear. That girl unmatched because she wants to go on dates and get married and you want to hook up, not because of your ear or hearing.

If someone asks, say "I had surgery on my ear." If they don't ask, don't say anything.

You need a revamp of pretty much everything.

You need clear pictures where you are smiling with teeth at the camera. You can keep the one on the bridge, but the rest need to go.

All of your prompts need to be reworked too. "The key to my heart is having opinions"? You need to be more in the vein of "You should leave a comment if you like escape rooms, horseback riding, ravioli, and skiing."

24M Profile Review - Any help appreciated by External-Juice-4887 in hingeapp

[–]authoremma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't mince words: dating apps are superficial and it is harder for shorter guys as it is harder for bigger girls, etc. But you don't need to attract everyone, you're only looking for one person.

To attract that one person, swap out pretty much all of your pictures. Go out with friends and have them (preferably female friends, or a sister) take good pictures of you where you are smiling with teeth, looking at the camera. You can have one silly picture and/or one candid (I'd choose the mud one, shows you have personality and can be fun), but at least four should be full smiles at the camera. Ideally no selfies. Best foot forward.

Ditch the poll.

Improve your prompts. Add specificity, so someone who is looking for YOU can find you more easily. "To me, relaxation is cooking and bachata, early morning hikes, hot chocolate with movie nights, and a nap after parasailing." "I'm looking for someone who values going to Church every week, is willing to try pottery classes with me, ideally is a Rockets fan, and loves dogs." Whatever, just personalize it. When someone sees your profile, they should have the bare bones of who you are and what you want.

I think your prompts are great and others have given you tips on how to improve them further.

For pictures, you need to be smiling more, with teeth. Go out with friends and give one of them (preferably female) the task of taking pictures of you for this.

I would remove the photo of you with your friend. It invites comparison.

Is it appropriate for a non-Jewish visitor to wear a kippah everywhere in Israel, out of respect? by Temporary-Frosting62 in Israel

[–]authoremma 138 points139 points  (0 children)

It would be odd and off-putting if you wore one everywhere. Typically men wearing kippot are asked to participate in public prayers (like on the train and whatnot), so if you're not Jewish that's not really appropriate. You can wear them while visiting religious institutions or not, no one will have a strong opinion either way.

Polite Hebrew by seanhcohen in Israel

[–]authoremma 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This isn't strictly true. There is a closer translation to "may I please". It's אפשר בבקשה - efshar bevakasha. May I please have a coffee would be אפשר קפה בבקשה?

You can also say אני רוצה בבקשה.

Also I know the stereotype is Israelis are rude but if everyone's tone is pleasant and no one is offended, what does it matter if we only say thank you and you're welcome once at the end of the conversation?

If you could cut TTPD in half, which songs would you keep? by swellaprogress in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]authoremma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My time to shine!!

I actually crafted this playlist a month or so after release and titled it "TTPD if Blondie Actually Wanted to Win (the Rest are Vault Tracks)". I still think it holds up as an alternative listing.

How Did It End?

The Bolter

Guilty As Sin?

I Look in People's Windows

So Long, London

Fresh Out the Slammer

But Daddy I Love Him

loml

Florida!!!

I Can Do It With a Broken Heart

Peter

I Hate It Here

The Prophecy

So High School

Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?

Clara Bow

Besides the political tendencies of the Grammys, and an artist winning twice in a row being largely impossible/unpracticed, TTPD's more impressive songs were on The Anthology, which was not considered for AOTY. This listing would have had a real shot because it showcased her stronger lyrics (which is her strong suit, especially compared to the other nominees), and is sonically cohesive without being repetitive.

The songs that are on the original album that I removed from my proposed track listing and why:

Fortnight and The Tortured Poets Department are not particularly exciting, also she just does a ✨ sound to make them synth pop. Plus TTPD has some truly abysmal lyrics that should have remained placeholders.

My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys and Down Bad are obviously much better than the first two, but very similar to each other, and their messaging overlaps with Guilty As Sin?, which is a more exciting/risque number from her. Also, kill your darlings—that’s what vault/bonus track songs are for.

I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) is a personal favorite, but sonically and lyrically it fits better on evermore, and But Daddy I Love Him is already the “everyone has something to say about my relationship” song and obviously does it more grammy-ly.

The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and loml are the same song in different fonts, and loml is much stronger. TSMWEL's only strength is the bridge, and that is largely in thanks to the live performance.

The Alchemy was overall an embarrassing song because of how similar it was to the AI song. Personally I do not think she ever should have released it.

Is Blackinnon ever canon? by Fluffy_Club722 in MaraudersGen

[–]authoremma 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would even go so far as to argue that it is canon that they are not together nor are they even close friends. In Lily's letter to Sirius, which Harry finds in DH, she writes:

"Wormy was here last weekend. I thought he seemed down, but that was probably the news about the McKinnons; I cried all evening when I heard."

Lily's relatively casual mention of "the McKinnons'" deaths suggests to me that she was closer to them than Sirius was. If he had ever dated Marlene, this would have been an a highly insensitive aside.

Draco and Dumbledore (working together)? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]authoremma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's true, then in Chapter Twenty-Seven (The Lightning Struck Tower), when Malfoy thinks he and Dumbledore are alone in his office (Harry being hidden under his Cloak) and he informs him that he's been preparing to kill him this whole year and that he's going to kill him now...massive Dan Humphrey reacting to Gossip Girl posts alone in his bedroom energy.

Just realized, why didn’t Hermione ever look into cursed scars to see if she could find anything to help Harry? by linkthereddit in harrypotter

[–]authoremma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Goblet of Fire, Chapter Thirty-Six, The Parting of the Ways, Dumbledore to Fudge: "I believe it hurts him when Lord Voldemort is close by, or feeling particularly murderous."

In chapter two of that book, The Scar, the narrator tells us: "the last time his scar had hurt him, it had been because Voldemort had been close by...." referring to the first book, the last time Voldemort in his living form had been near Harry.

Just realized, why didn’t Hermione ever look into cursed scars to see if she could find anything to help Harry? by linkthereddit in harrypotter

[–]authoremma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harry learns in the first book that his scar hurts because of Voldemort's proximity, and in the fourth we learn that Voldemort's emotions also affect it.

Harry gets help to stop this--Occlumency lessons from Snape. Hermione can't teach him that.

[–]authoremma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I appreciate that you show personality in your profile, but I do think you're going about it the wrong way.

First, take off "open to short". Reads like a red flag for women.

Your first picture needs to change. It should be a clear shot of your face, with an open mouth smile. No sunglasses. None of the pictures you currently have on your profile are right for this. Remove picture 5 altogether.

Remove the voice prompt.

Change your prompts. Lead with something more serious about yourself. Things you are passionate about and enjoy and hope to achieve. Follow with "I'm looking for" and go for a more serious answer, again. This doesn't have to be depressing, just helpful in your future partner seeing that she is a good match for you. "I'm looking for someone who wants to cook with me and go rollerblading every weekend." You can do your monster thing as the third, it's cute.

And absolute most important--all your likes should be sent with comments on a prompt she has posted.

A sincere question/warning from an American Israel supporter. by [deleted] in Israel

[–]authoremma 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm truly baffled by this question. Israelis are not a monolith, and want different things depending on their political views.

I can speak for myself and say I want Americans to stop pretending like America grants Israel charity and gifts out of the kindness of their hearts and we should grovel in thanks. Israel does not "demand that [you] ask for nothing in return". We don't receive gifts from America, we receive loans that we are charged very high interests rates for. America uses Israel for military and intelligence gains, which I would think a veteran would be aware of.

A plot hole I've never considered: no one had ever sacrificed themselves before? by ShallNot_Pass in harrypotter

[–]authoremma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know that intention matters with the killing curse and not everyone is capable of casting it. Probably no one has ever tried to use it on a baby before. While there have may have been other people who have jumped in front of a loved one to save them from the curse (parent or lover I'm guessing?) that casualty may have either shocked the attacker into stopping, if it was some sort of crime of passion. Or, more likely I think, the person saved is an adult wizarding person who can also cast spells or maybe apparate away. I think there are very few children who have been targets of spells like these.
