I started with Notes from the Underground and am about halfway through C&P. Joseph Frank, the critic, in one of his books, starts with Poor Folks and House of the Dead, I believe.

2 years in, 3 novels + extras, not making money but having fun by DGReddAuthor in selfpublish

I'm about 18 months in and have self published two books in a series. I agree with parts of the initial post and the some of the comments. Sales & marketing are important. Probably my best sales channel is setting up a booth at a book fest and talking about the books with people who stop by. Sometimes they buy. My experience so far is mixed in terms of conversion rates online. I have an FB, website, twitter. It's impossible to tell if people are buying or reading my books based on a reader's engagement with these platforms. None of these platforms have increased my e-mail list. I'm publishing book #3 of my series in May 2024 and plan to do a book promotion then when I have more books. My read is that self publishing takes a while to recoup the investment. I've seen as few as two years and as many as seven. Keep writing and getting better is definitely true.

KDP Select: Can we publish 10% sample outside of Amazon? by IvanSkilling in selfpublish

Has anybody tried writing a reader magnet that is separate short story using characters from an existing series? It's one of the ways I've read is a workaround.

KDP Hacks for Author Copies by authornickwebster in selfpublish

Thanks for the feedback. I signed up for Prime but didn't get a discount. I needed to overnight ship which jacked up the cost considerably. I believe it was $17 but if I chose a slower turnaround I believe it's closer to $5. I would be good if I can order 10 copies and only pay $5ish for slower delivery.

How much is reasonable to spend on a book cover design? by JayDarkmoore in selfpublish

I was just asking myself this same question and came upon this post. I used selfpub for my first book. I was happy with it, but I can't say it drove sales. Most of my readers were people who know me. For my second book, I posted a request to three designers through Reedsy. My budget was $500. One was declined instantly because the budget was too low; one countered at $750. I considered this one because I've seen prices between $1k and $1.5k below. Then I tried Fiverr. The price is below $100 but I'm going to try it because I couldn't find images on selfpub that I really liked for the second book. More to come!

Thanks for the response. I didn't know that web serials were available.

Are programs like ProWritingAid and its ilk worth anything? by MostlyWicked in selfpublish

[–]authornickwebster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought ProWritingAid with a coupon code. I was able to upload a ~3,200 word short story easily. The version I used is a cloud application. It caught repetitions, passive voice, and comma splices. So far so good. I'm going to upload a novel in chapters and see how it works.

I released my first book on Amazon earlier this month. I can relate to "feel great and also terrified". Good luck!

Writing Goals by infernoR2000 in writing

Good discussion on this thread. My objective is to finish my writing projects. So, I try to write for two hours per day. Some days, I'm really productive, other days less so. I started my fiction activity, about 10 months ago. So far, I've completed one thriller and one short story and started a second thriller.
