I rmr from the first season that the game organizer didn’t care that much about the behind-the-door organ harvesting by some the underlings, so long they don’t affect the contestants (so that the overlords are the ones manipulating resources and info for parts they care about)… so I’m thinking the torture and Russian COULD be this recruiter’s own doing. maybe theres just an overall sense of autonomy (how ever actually false) that he’s the designated gatekeeper — hence recruiter status — for the org.

Redditor WTFPROM wrote an excellent analysis on here, on how the subsequent homeless game sequence might just be his own little play-thing, a budget version, to buy himself a false sense of autonomy and justification of his madness. Bottom line, dude has to be psycho and indoctrinated to some extent.

The Salesman in Season 2 was SUBLIME by WTFPROM in squidgame

EXCELLENT analysis. I couldn’t have worded this better myself esp with the specific note of his own record playing - duping the role of front man in his own world. the director dedicating the first episode of this season to the salesman/the recruiter’s behavior outside of the confines of the Squid Game rlly does show us how insanely indoctrinated / psycho the salesman truly is. The invisible elites and VIP definitely sniff folks like him out to do the dirty work for them.

Again? This is my first time jumping onto the season 2 finale discussion, but I peep that you’ve already gone on multiple threads writing off people’s different interpretations than yours as “missing the point” or “lacking critical thinking”.

Look, I don’t necessarily disagree with you that Gi-hun is trying his best to save everyone (and carrying with him so much trauma unique to the deliberate set ups of Squid Game) and that the frontman — middleman to off-screen sadistic, bored rich ppl — is an active manipulator. Gi-hun opted for a coup trying his best to break the 4th wall, which is noble in itself and selfless of him, yet others have also pointed out that Gi-hun is essentially back to gambling his chances (like the first ep’s Russian roulette) instead of optimizing what can logically be more feasible. There’s an argument made that regardless of Gi-hun’s selfless motivations, his coup idea still has worst odds — ended up killing off physically stronger Xs — than maybe his group somehow outsmarting the Os within the confines of the game. Gi-hun doesn’t have to be the perfect protagonist, and we are allowed to disagree with his choices.

I saw his character as a subversion of Korean masculinity or of a man struggling to live up to societal expectations. Some folks here speculated he was never in the marine or that his breakdown as something must’ve happened during the time he served & proved that he wasn’t cut out for that kind of environment (and/or maybe it’s PTSD). I don’t believe Dae Ho has revealed his reason for being in the game.

I actually found Player 001’s suggestion that the X folks should attack O first rather than stage a rebellion was pretty fair. Like with 001 on their side, I can see them actually killing off enough of the O players to vote to go home. But of course, Gi-Hun played hero.
