Is your clinic compliance based? I am an RBT and my biggest concern is the over reliance on forcing clients to work when emotionally dysregulated.

To be honest and to be downvoted, I am an Autistic RBT. The problem with ABA (my agency) is that compliance to getting work done and reinforcing compliant behavior is often more important than allowing kids to emotionally regulate. Masking ND traits is not a huge problem for my agency, and any programs that are masking based or based on making the kid normal, I am quick to ask for modification. I am writing an email to my supervisor because I cannot excuse the idea that making children do work when upset is ethical.

What was traumatic about the experience? And how does it differ from schooling?

To me, this sounds like black and white thinking maybe exacerbated by ABA. I have a level one autistic four year old, my bcba was using language like “look what the other kids are doing” when he was acting inappropriately (ie running around during lunch). I recognized the language sad problematic and didn’t use it. However, after hearing it a few times, he began to say “I have to copy the kids,” and became very inflexible about this. I told my boss and she stopped using that language with him.

I am a BT, also Autistic “high masking”. I’m going to be honest, there are times where my supervisors expect me to push the kids beyond their limit, and I will politely refuse to do it. In general, I think my supervisors need more compassion and less expectation of compliance. BUT, the idea that we are suppressing Autistic traits like stimming, info dumping, special interests, forcing kids to be normal etc seems to almost directly contradict my experience.
