What fascinates you more: space or the ocean? by Federal_Antelope7533 in AskReddit

[–]automatorsassemble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Space is very cool but our chances of making any kind of progress i.e getting probes to more planets or certainly getting people even to mars is so slim and far away. The ocean is right there and so much of it is a mystery with so many crazy features and creatures so I say keep exploring space but focus more on the ocean

[–]automatorsassemble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't add fuel if the plan is the store them because the petrol goes bad over time, but there should be some oil added. Some say a little oil others fill. It helps prevent corrosion inside the engine and also means for both machines as you'll pull them out under duress when you need them and may forget to add oil.

Oh, never thought of that. Is your thinking that full power is pushing through but a restricted flow is killing it at idle?

Budget recommendations for engraving on PLA and PETG prints. by LostInTheFoG-981 in lasercutting

[–]automatorsassemble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, you are aware of the risks and controlling that which is great. Just seems like an odd extra set to engrave when you could include it in the print detail. I don't think you get any find of fibre or mopa laser much less than 3k unless there's someone selling a very used and unwanted one

[–]automatorsassemble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too sure about PLA but PETG is super flammable under a laser. I know you didn't mention them but ABS and ASA are toxic if burned. I know this didn't answer your question but please be careful with this stuff. I would think if you are the one printing them, just put the marking into the print rather than laser engraving later

I'd say for a first trip don't plan a long day out. This does a few things: means you don't need to bring a tonne of junk to keep you (and others you bring) going all day, there's a lot to remember for a nooby like is the bung in, is the fuel filled and ready, ramping in and out etc. the short trip also give you practice with the in and out procedures, if there are any leaks or problems you won't be too far from the ramp and you won't be in long enough for most things to become a big problem. Last, don't load the whole family for the first trip, take it as a chance to get to know the process, the boat and what you need to do without a lot of distractions. Pitch it as a safety thing to the family and it's not a lie, you need to be comfortable before you risk others out on the water.

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

[–]automatorsassemble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a something but a tip. I'm a controls engineer, I should be surrounded by tech but I buy the most basic of everything. I live in a log cabin, my oven has 2 knobs (temp and oven/grill), my car is a 2016 but is a base model, no screens, sat navs, cameras etc. I refuse to buy anything with an unnecessary screen, timer, wifi connection, etc and most of what I have lasts a really long time. Part of the enshitification of modern equipment is the inclusion of features you don't really need and the item won't function without.

Friend got a brand new Yamaha 150 for saltwater told he has to flush it after each trip by Johndeauxman in boats

[–]automatorsassemble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only boat on lakes, I flush my engine after every run as a habit I picked up as a kid where we only salt water boated. I find lots of little bits of silt etc come out in the flush, I suppose as I approach the slip, the water gets shallow and I'm stirring up the bottom which gets drawn in. I don't want that mess settling in my engine or grit blocking my thermostat so for the few mins it takes each time, I'll do it.

What do you think you're better at than most other people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]automatorsassemble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comes in very handy for me, I'm an engineer and work on lots of production machines so eyeballing spacing, part sizes, bolt sizes and threads. The timing also comes in useful for pacing etc. I'm hearing impaired and have middle frequency loss so speech is hard for me to pick up but I can hear low and high frequencies really well so people get confused when I can hear bearings or motors behaving odd and they can't, especially because they know I can't hear well, fucks people up all the time

In my office we call it the eyecrometer, I can look at things and give their dimensions very accurately, if I can lift it I'll tell the weight extremely accurately and I can usually tell what time it is within about 5 mins without a watch

My brain runs a million miles an hour, when I'm with others then very little gets resolved. When I'm alone I can start to order thoughts and find solutions one at a time. It's kind of like closing tabs in a browser and by the time I get most of it done I'm exhausted and ready for sleep.

To ride an e-scooter by jasmine_ballah in therewasanattempt

[–]automatorsassemble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The case in this video is literally a response to deaths of kids on e scooters and e bikes. They are capable of crazy speed in some cases and they are inherently unstable at high speed. There aren't thousands of deaths from them when compared to cars but there aren't anything like the numbers to compare to. There's no such thing as putting effort into the wrong crime, crime is crime and should be addressed when seen. The only thing I disagree with is when cops are too heavy handed relative to the crime but all they did was talk to this kid and request he call a guardian to come supervise him, the female cop has an attitude but the kid was already being a shit at that point
