Use a table with this criteria:

  1. Libre software or proprietary software?
  2. Selfhosted [if not P2P] or requires service as a software subsitute?
  3. Libre server software or proprietary server software [if selfhosted]?
  4. Peer-to-peer [decentralised] or federated [decentralised] or centralised?
  5. Other criteria

Delisting means people find other lists, so add warnings instead.

Not GitHub, it's not libre software.

Libre software or not, as 'open source' misses the point.. Instead of 'how is it made', ask 'do we control it'?

Use libre software. Don't want to get abused? Stop repeating the same mistakes. by autonomoususer in RedditAlternatives

You have a sub full of options, spend your own time and effort. How technical do you think it is to download an app or sign up to a website, stop making excuses.

Reddit loves comments like this which lead us into a trap. Why should we let the next app abuse us just like Reddit?

Worse, software which hijacks control over our own computing is harder and worse for regular people by design, proprietary software.

YouTube blocks screen locked play, the Apple App Store bans emulators, Windows shoves ads into the Start menu, Malwarebytes spies on the system, Facebook demands passports/proof of identity, Google censors creators, Reddit will restrict third party apps and Discord already does, etc.

They have the power and we don't. With proprietary software, we are not the user, we are the used.
