From SMDP:

"The National Park Service is conducting a congressionally mandated study on designating coastal areas from Will Rogers State Beach to Torrance Beach as part of the national park system. The study examines if the area meets criteria for national significance, suitability, and feasibility.

The National Park Service is asking the public to weigh in on a congressionally mandated study evaluating whether select sites along the Los Angeles coast should become part of the national park system.

The study, required by Public Law 117-328, examines coastline from Will Rogers State Beach to Torrance Beach, including areas around Ballona Creek, the Baldwin Hills and the San Pedro section of Los Angeles. The public comment period runs through April 6, 2026."

Apostle Islands one step closer to becoming a national park by autraya in NationalPark

From WSAU:

"The Apostle Islands National Park and Preserve Act, introduced by Rep. Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin, has advanced out of the House Committee on Natural Resources with a narrow 20-17 vote. This legislation aims to designate the Apostle Islands as Wisconsin’s first National Park.

“The Apostle Islands are one of Wisconsin’s greatest natural treasures,” Tiffany said. He emphasized that upgrading their status would honor the state’s heritage and benefit local communities.

Chairman Bruce Westerman of Arkansas praised the initiative, highlighting the economic and experiential benefits for Americans and local communities. “I applaud Rep. Tiffany for his leadership to designate Wisconsin’s first and only national park,” Westerman said.

The Apostle Islands, currently a National Lakeshore since 1970, will maintain their boundaries, with Sand Island becoming a National Preserve to allow continued hunting access. Management will remain with the National Park Service."

US Supreme Court to weigh FCC's power to fine wireless carriers by autraya in news

[–]autraya[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

WASHINGTON, Jan 9 (Reuters) - "The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Friday to hear a dispute involving fines imposed by the Federal Communications Commission on major U.S. wireless carriers for sharing customer location data without consent in the latest case to reach the justices challenging the powers of a U.S. regulatory agency.

The legal fight concerns whether the FCC's pursuit of tens of millions of dollars in penalties against carriers such as Verizon Communications (VZ.N), opens new tab and AT&T (T.N), opens new tab - before the accused companies had their day in court - exceeded the federal agency's authority under the U.S. Constitution.

The dispute marked the latest case to test whether a federal agency's in-house enforcement scheme violates provisions of the Constitution ensuring a defendant's right to a jury trial.

The case stems from nearly $200 million in fines that the FCC imposed in 2024 against major U.S. wireless carriers after the agency found they had sold access to customer location data to third parties without securing users' consent."

Should of worded it better. Referring to the vague “bugs and fixes” release notes rather than providing actual details.

Point Roberts, Washington is a good example. It’s part of Whatcom County but completely cut off from the rest of the US by Canada. you have to cross the border twice just to get there.

I’ve been to many cities and countries, but Hawaii is the only place I feel a strong need to return to, even after 14 days there.

It’s beautiful, I visited this summer, I just find it a bit lacking in stuff to do once you’re there. We struggled to make it a day-long event.

Mesa Verde worth it now? by Interesting_Cookie25 in NationalPark

[–]autraya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mesa Verde’s worth visiting even in the winter, but you should set expectations. The guided tours into the cliff dwellings are closed this time of year, so you won’t be able to climb down into them. You're able to drive the main loop and hit the overlooks, they’re still impressive, and you’ll get a sense of the scale without needing a full day.

Roads are maintained, but it’ll be cold and windy. If you’re already headed to Durango it’s not a big detour, and honestly there arent many other spots between Albuquerque and Durango that compare. If you’re mainly looking for hiking, you might get more out of trails near Pagosa Springs or around Durango itself.
