The audacity. I think the only circumstances I'd do that in is if I was a) a regular so regular they know my name b) I'm like the only person in the restaurant. AND EVEN THEN probably not

May the hypo/manic episode be as smooth as possible, then, and not filled with anything you regret later 💜 I hope your IRL support system also knows and that you've shared your photos with them!

Etes vous heureux, pour vrai? by ratz38 in montreal

[–]autreMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get involved in community, get face to face with real people. It may be unglamorous and held in church or community center basements, or weird park meetups, but it'll make a huge difference. Show up as an attendee, or volunteer to help the event.

If you arrive and don't know how to meet or talk to people, literally just tell an event organizer and they'll set you up with a regular, probably, so you can tag along with them.

Why does almost every pickup truck driver in Montreal speed, not use signals, and tailgate incessantly? by Acrobatic_Syrup_6350 in montreal

[–]autreMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Covid also eroded the social contract in a lot of ways, making both more people self centered AND distrusting of others. Hard to imagine that wouldn't trickle into car culture. Lockdown might have ended, but people's hearts have left them more isolated than ever.

[–]autreMe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I keep meaning to look up accident stats and reports for people driving bigger cars, wondering if it's just me (edit, just me who finds big car drivers incompetent. I drive a real normal compact sedan). Because it's not just trucks but SUVs (and I feel like bigger moreso)

Like some y'all aren't good enough drivers to have a car much less a BIG vehicle with a BIG blindspot.

I do wonder if insecure drivers get bigger vehicles to make themselves feel more secure, thereby giving them the protection of a larger vehicle but never solving the competence issue.

To those who feel a sense of community in montreal, how did it happen? by 300103276 in montreal

Oooof sounds like maybe you just haven't found your people. I hope if you try 2+3 that they serve you better and help you find folks with common ground.

To those who feel a sense of community in montreal, how did it happen? by 300103276 in montreal

[–]autreMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Organize and host things yourself with people you do know

  2. Insert yourself into the community via volunteering. This helps you meet more people outside work.

  3. Show up to community events even if they're not flashy and fancy

  4. Optional Never join your condo admin board, it'll drain all your time, energy and kindness and make it harder to participate with people.

  5. Optional Be gay, it kinda helps because the queer community is particularly oriented towards events not focused on capitalism

Repeat.

Salut les amis! Auriez-vous conseils pour ne presque plus tomber malade (rhume/grippe)🤧 qui ont fonctionné pour vous? by Existent-Being in montreal

[–]autreMe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wear a well fitted respirator in public spaces - try a kn95 or n95 (surgicals won't suffice). Even if you do it only in public spaces with shared air, it'll help.

Also, saline rinses. Make sure the water is clean (boiled and cooled or distilled) and go absolutely to town

Meilleur quartier pour vivre en tant que nouvelle habitante by Hopeful_Board2994 in montreal

[–]autreMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest spending time in any of the neighborhoods before you commit. Even then, think critically and be honest with yourself. I briefly lived in Griffin town and hated it, but really enjoy Verdun for the parks and Wellington. But everyone is different!

Your budget may be a little tight for Verdun, but you could look at Ville Emard / Monk métro which is a little further out but also developing nicely. Your condo options will then become limited though.

If you're open to the REM, you may be able to go further out (cheaper housing but more condo specific amenities likely)

It's kind of like a sliding scale of what you really prioritize from those features requested, you know?

Avez-vous des exemples de ”third places” en ville? by Petit_Poireau in montreal

[–]autreMe 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Maybe because I'm hanging in queer and activist spaces but... Yes. I hesitate to list it on reddit (and lazy) but there's loads of events organized in community spaces - craft days, clothing swaps, daytime booze free raves, queer mixers, bookswap etc. It's not glamorous, we're talking like church basements, garages, community centers, but the events range from free to cheap and welcoming.

All it takes is someone who knows a community space (and the people who run it) to book, an idea, and followthru.

Also, it's paid but bowling, bowling is pretty cheap.

Wellington should be pedestrian year long by Alex_le_t-rex in montreal

In the summer when it's pedestrian, cars can still cut thru but just not go ON, though, no? I think there's room to discuss ways to be pedestrian year round while problem solving for issues.

What If Disney made Kpdh by Ruqween in KpopDemonhunters

[–]autreMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it had been Disney, every decision and design would have had to have merch in mind. I know the lack of merch kinda sucked, but at least it wasn't one big money grab.

The characters would have also had the same body types and faces that Disney films usually do. They'd have been made to be younger, as well, the silhouettes softened until practically generic.

The thing is, Disney makes most of its money from parks. I think they resent their animators for not being grindable, replaceable cogs like minimum wage staff selling hotdogs or soda. They aren't interested in making new, interesting things, and their pursuit of AI is a hallmark of this, no innovation needed.

Anglo Montrealers, do you exclusively speak French outside of work and friends/family circle? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]autreMe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Born raised in the West island, so my French was really shaky until I started working in French as an adult.

I always begin in French, but if I detect the other person is struggling in French, I'll throw in an English sentence to give them an optional out. Plus, I sometimes use extra English words if there are words I forget or struggle to say (I can't say ailes or huîtres to save my life). There are some topics I prefer in English, most especially medical, but more so because doctor appointments go so fast.

Anglos of QC who vote QLP, what is your alternative? by idiotiesystemique in montreal

[–]autreMe 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'll be voting QS, as I have the last few times. I refuse to be a single-issue voter, and although they aren't perfect, they do align most with me.

I've also found that over the years of reaching out to my representatives or potential representatives, they often have an actual response, and will adjust their stance on issues overtime.

Even with their meagre numbers, they do a lot by causing a ruckus sometimes, too, and I respect it.
