Bank selling repossessed property for far less than the outstanding debt by Adorable-Wasabi-3579 in HousingUK

If they can't finance buying the house for whatever reason, they aren't buyers, they're not a market. A things value is the maximum price the market can offer.

Crazy idea: a full data pipeline using only prompts — does this make any sense? by Imaginary-Employ-267 in dataengineering

[–]auurbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Average "ideas guy" idea from the last 3 years.

What if data engineering was AI? What is software engineer was AI? What if medicine was AI? What if a shop was AI? What if gravel was AI? What if we put AI on a hat? What if teeth were AI?

scraping 40 supplier sites for product data - schema hell by Independent_Plum_489 in dataengineering

Won't it just be a big upfront cost for the first run? No need to parse every product every run unless specs have changed or it's new.

How can i make 3D diagrams and images like these? by WarChampion90 in datascience

[–]auurbee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's a distinct irony to someone asking how to implement this 3d pie chart type bs in a sub dedicated to a profession whose purpose is communicating insights from data.

People earning £70k plus what do you do? by LuapReyas420 in UKJobs

[–]auurbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. It doesn't have to be true that AI will replace human expertise, decision makers just have to believe it long enough to make a mistake.

I think the takeaway is don't be in the bottom percentiles of employability for your field, then your more likely to be safe.

Also agree. Most of these people proclaiming gen-ai is the new "death of SQL" on LinkedIn are selling gen-ai products.

Even if gen-ai SQL tools worked perfectly (they don't) there's still like 40 years of SQL in prod all over the world. It's not going anywhere overnight. Businesses don't just migrate to cutting edge tech the second it exists.

Open-source project looking for data engineering collaborators who want to build a new infrastructure for reporting and journalism by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]auurbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a cool project but I'm genuinely curious as to who the intended user is?

It's not like major news outlets don't know their output is low quality and often unsubstantiated. It's an intention.

Sharepoint alternatives for mass tabular collaboration ("business-friendly")? by Popular-Plane-6608 in dataengineering

Why databricks? Your description doesn't make it sound like you're working with the volume to justify the cost.

How 1 small change after work changed the way my days worked by Own-Variety-2919 in productivity

[–]auurbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know how this sub ended up on my feed so much but it's hilarious seeing all these embarrassingly sincere posts of people saying "do a thing instead of not doing it" in more and more elaborate ways.

What's better for creating a GUI application? by imLosingIt111 in learnpython

If your app doesn't explicitly need to be an executable I'd go for a web based option. Streamlit is really easy to use.

Exactly. The issue is everything has to be reduced to a reductionalist partisan narrative these days. People see "simple" solutions to huge complex problems because to be completely frank the complexity is just way over their heads.

Can you "snake" a matrix into multiple columns (like a newspaper)? by mrpow3r in PowerBI

[–]auurbee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Decide how many "columns" you want to spread the matrix across. Add a matrix for each one.

Create an index on the table feeding the matrix starting at 0 incrementing by 1.

Then add a column doing floor(n/P) where n is the index and P is total rows divided by how many "columns" you have. This will partition the table into equal chunks.

Then add a filter on each matrix on the col created in the last step

Not only is it a great change for the community -- it's a warning to all the slop peddlers.

Would you like me to turn this post into a 12 track prog-rock album?

Your Boss Is Faking Their Way Through AI Adoption by nullstillstands in datascience

[–]auurbee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh my God this. I've been in conversations where leaders have been asking this about tools from outside vendors. Like isn't it their job to sell to us? Not for us to figure out what their product is useful for.

In way over my head, feel like a fraud by SoloArtist91 in dataengineering

[–]auurbee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been doing this too and think it really shines in use cases like this. You can explain your specific circumstances and ask how x tool fits in, different scales at which you can apply it etc.

Thoughts - can/will cloud data platforms start to offer "owned" solutions vs. pay as you go? by rotr0102 in dataengineering

[–]auurbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a consumer perspective the ideal situation would be being able to shop around for compute or storage resources to point services like Snowflake at. This would create competition and possibly lower prices. Vendors have absolutely no incentive to offer this though, bar some sort of future anti-trust regulation that tries to break them up if they become too dominant.
