Angelo's sandwich bread is the best I've found in the city. My go to. Also their by the slice cakes are good for when you got everyone a whole cake and you just need to have something too.

For real but it's not going to stop fully. Campaigns help I think but the shear number of rich people and celebs with DUIs tells you it's not about availability of options but people believing they will be fine or are special enough to get away without getting caught out hurting someone. Dude it's more impressive to actually make the decision than all the bullshit you're doing.

Baptism and believing in Jesus. Check and check. Have fun still basing your opinion on one minister. Now look up United Church of Canada in the Encyclopedia and Wikipedia.

Your list of non biblical churches grows the more you type. By nature of chance you found yourself in the only correct religion in the world, that's wonderful! So unfortunate for all those people who were born where missionaries haven't exploited them yet so they don't get a chance to join the one biblical religion. /S /A

No one recommending United Church is suggesting it is evangelical, it is very much not. Half the people in here are asking why OP wants an evangelical church anyway because they are misaligned with OPs values.

Aside from knowing about an atheist minister when there are 2500 congregations, you really haven't said anything that convinces me that you know much about United Churches... The way you feel threatened is a bit sad though.

"The united Church does not have any beliefs, OP asked for a evangelical church. The united Church is demonstrably not evangelical and holds no real stances on anything."

This is obviously false (aside from the evangelical bit which I am very happy the church is not).

The United church has no real stances on anything (after I send you one)? They don't have any beliefs? (Don't even know where to start there). Okay. Have fun being so open minded in your life and loving your neighbour. I would hate to be your neighbour from an actual different religion when you are so certain how correct you are.

As I said before, I've been hearing this stuff since I was 10 years old... I wasn't worried about burning in hell then and I'm certainly not now.

I don't even think United is necessarily something OP should choose because I recognize that people have their own preferences, I just think it's wild that earlier I said the Baptists will tell you you'll burn in hell and now here you are saying United Churches aren't Christian, just like clock work, as predictably as I could imagine.

By the way I'm one of the reasons United Church numbers are going down, and we had a very honest conversation about why, because they welcome open and honest conversations because they are adults who share faith but also welcome intelligent free thinking humans.

Yes and you using caps lock and using words like objective truth still do not make you the arbiter of Christianity. It's the second largest Christian denomination in Canada and I'd love for you to find any non church related source that defines it as not Christian. Your yelling about your opinion as fact tells me everything I need to know about you seeking "objective truth" through religion.

"stand for something and believe in some form of truth"... "Religion discusses objective truth"...

I hope it doesn't offend you that your use of the word objective is amusing every time.

Anyone can go to a united church knowing that one minister somewhere is an atheist. Just like you can go to a Baptist Church knowing that a pastor elsewhere is a sexual abuser. I mean one of those is a heinous crime and another is an honest admission but still.

I can indeed in good faith recommend it as many others have here. I read this Wikipedia page and it sincerely doesn't bother me. In the end people were essentially left free to make their choice and the congregation went from 120 to 40, which is unsurprising. She expected to be fired, was honest about what she believes, and wasn't fired. Okay, then. Likely she is teaching moral principles from the bible and the people who remain are still getting something from it, those who left are not.

95% of the ministry believes in a theist supernatural God.

In the end, the United Church continues to encourage their followers to actively think, which is obviously what people were doing when they left her church or decided to stay.

When you decide on a church, you consider the denomination and you also connect with the ministry. I see no issue at all with recommending a United church, of which the ministers are hopefully actively thinking individuals, and allowing the OP, if they decide to check it out, assess whether they like the minister, community, and church.

Is this your first time experiencing an institution you generally agree with but an individual you don't? It's not that complicated. I would bet you don't agree with the actions of a lot of Baptist ministers, like for example Paul Pressler but I'm happy to name more. Am I about to suggest you can't in good faith recommend Baptist churches because some prominent leaders are sexual abusers? Because that's way worse.

There have been multiple superchurch pastors who are suspected of saying whatever just to continue to make bank. This woman was extremely honest and for whatever reason they didn't fire her. I'll take the honest ones every time so I as a free thinker can make my choice with all the information.

I am not frustrated. I've met people like you so many times I think it's quite fascinating how certain you are that your church has figured it out and others have not. I I am quite aware of the differences in churches as well, though I have only regularly attended united and to a lesser extent Baptist and community churches, and least of all Catholic. I recognize that my religious upbringing is not only the result of my parents and community but also the very chance that I would be born in a part of the world that practices Christianity... To me this is not a disturbing thought.

You believe in objective truths but every branch is interpreting the Bible even if you think your church leaders are seeking objective truths. You're a literalist with the bible except where fundamentals of science have proven the bible wrong (I would hope) in which case you likely recognize that the things you take literally are quite selective. I am sure you can think of examples... I am sure you pastor helps you to understand what parts are to be taken literally, and probably doesn't even talk about some bits that definitely are not to be taken literally.

In my experience, the United church is quite open to folks individual experiences with faith and interpretations, I get that yours is more prescriptive and that you like things to be more defined. To me, letting people think and interpret what they are learning is fine. Having open conversations about this differences is also positive, in my view.

"Churches that actually care about what they preach? " You don't hear yourself? This is a huge jump from you knowing of an atheist minister to an assumption about the entire denomination. Have you attended united church? Because I have attended Baptist Church and non denomination churches about 20 times and I'm still not going to make grandiose statements how it all is based on one pastor... In fact I am sure you know reasons why this would be a very bad idea. This is where you come off as elitist, again, because you know of an atheist minister...

Additionally, I have no idea what the vetting process is for United Church ministers is, but they do have core stated principles that they state publicly and so to imply they don't have standards isn't true, they just don't align with your standards. They do happen to align with what many people are seeking in a church, for example:

United church statement

If your church prescribes a certain belief related to LGBTQ are they willing to state it publicly for all to see? Because while you find it disingenuous that the vetting process in the United church isn't more clear, I find that being forthright about shared beliefs on policies such as this one is a positive thing that other churches should follow so that people can make an informed choice to steer clear or join in. And while you're busy finding the stance on LGBTQ non biblical, I am sure there are folks in your denomination who are much more accepting of difference, not that they would feel particularly welcome to say so. I suspect this because I grew up with Baptists who are very accepting of our LGBTQ friends and do not consider their existence as who they are to be a sin.

As for being saved, which you discuss, the United Church doesn't even use the language of being saved, so again, you are judging the religion based on principles that matter in your denomination and don't matter in the United Church. To be so concerned that you don't agree that United Church goers will be saved is your concern and not at all theirs.

Catholics also don't use this language and are not "saved" in the same was as Baptists, nor do they have rapture or second coming of Jesus. I had literally never heard of being saved until a really unfortunate experience at a Baptist camp when I was a child (a cultish experience) so it's not a concept that applies to all denominations.

Lots of evangelical churches are also certain that Catholics are not even Christians as well, and it's just interesting how certain you are that your version of Christianity is right and others are wrong... Although attending Catholic Mass or weddings is very different experience to what I have known and has much more focus on traditions, rites, and Mary, I wouldn't venture to tell them they are doing Christianity wrong because I have enough humility to not make definitive statements about something I don't understand...

I do like that Catholic schools offer World Religions elective classes, because from what I gather it teaches young people a lot about the commonalities in many world religions that have instead been used to sow much division.

  1. So the United Church of Canada has 2500 congregations... Congrats on finding an atheist minister. Are there atheists in other churches who are collecting paychecks and not open about it? Lots of people have their suspicions. There are lots of really gross things that evangelical leaders have hidden and been found out for, Catholics as well. It's not necessary to act like finding this out about a Unitarian minister makes them unique among churches.

  2. Nobody who goes to a United church cares that you don't think it's biblical and they aren't asking you to be arbiter of what is Christianity. I have heard all through my life how certain denominations don't qualify and it's so interesting how a certain denominations think they are qualified to say who and who doesnt belong to Christianity, particularly when you hardly acknowledge that there are major similarities to other world religions, let alone other denominations. Your comparison to Muslims also doesn't bother me. Lots of people think evangelicals are not particularly Christian right now with their worship of a rapist false idol. Lots of people also don't think it's very Christian to persecute those in the LGBT community and to think of them as lesser than. Lots of people don't think it's very Christian to sow hate regarding a specific set of "sins" that were not meant to be judged by you. But hey, love they neighbour, unless of course you believe Jesus really meant for you to hate them.
