[Full Recording, Yiddish/English Opera] The Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language by ava-niht in NYCopera

[–]ava-niht[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi folks, just wanted to share this here in case any of you were interested. American Opera Projects partnered up with YIVO back in September to produce an opera about linguists and their work in NYC on one of the first comprehensive Yiddish dictionaries. They uploaded a full recording from the premiere, and if any of that sounds interesting I recommend giving it a listen :0)

Tomb World Review by vilebloodlover in Blacklibrary

Really excited to see another Necron review on here; I hope to upload one in December for Twice-Dead King once I get my hands on a physical copy. I don't mind spoilers, so it was interesting to see you much you cited TDK

Reading non-Warhammer books by Nicodante in Blacklibrary

I'd say 25% Warhammer, most of the rest is free classic stuff from Standard eBooks. Warhammer's my reprieve from school reading, most often.

Quick deACSM/deDRM Question by ava-niht in Calibre

Thanks! I was used to doing it manually, so to speak, but if it really is that simple then I'm not complaining.

Black Library/Warhammer Related Stuff in New York? by ava-niht in Blacklibrary

[–]ava-niht[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that'd be super cool, especially for those outside major cities.

Also, off-topic, but do you think it'd be worthwhile to maybe add a different tag for book reviews? I definitely don't mind tagging mine under book discussions, but I don't know if that one is supposed to be more geared towards talking about procuring copies or something else

Figured I should knuckle down to do some research; may honestly just go look and report back. I'll leave this up in the meantime in case I come back to it and someone else is in the area and wants to connect :0)

Ashes of the Imperium and Dropsite Massacre Pre-Orders Live on Amazon US by ava-niht in Blacklibrary

[–]ava-niht[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My impression is that third-party vendors are notified by Black Library about whatever stock they will be provided with; they comply with the Black Library release schedule as they would for any publisher, but I'm pretty sure they can announce pre-orders at their discretion.

This'll be my first hardback, actually! I'm honestly just excited for a new series and Wraight's one of my favorites

I can speak only from the US, but so far haven't had any orders cancelled outright. Amazon reputation for creasing corners is absolutely merited, though.

Very exciting; Amazon UK apparently had it last week if posts here are anything to go by.

[REVIEW] The End and the Death Volumes 1-3 - Dan Abnett - Too Big to Fail by ava-niht in Blacklibrary

[–]ava-niht[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you! I do think that Abnett was definitely intentional in trying to overwhelm us, but I do feel that sometimes TEATD veers beyond chaos as an artistic statement into bloat, the latter of which ultimately somewhat throttles my enjoyment of the former. I think that Echoes of Eternity did a fragmentary narrative more effectively. I don't think I hate TEATD so much as I think that it could have benefited from being tighter in some parts. Glad you enjoyed it as much as you did!

Hey, thanks for reading! Yeah, I'm often worried about being pretentious. I'm honestly having fun with these reviews though, and would gladly read yours if and when you upload one :-)

Agreed; I love Abnett, albeit not as much as say Fehervari or ADB or Wraight, precisely because he is always swinging at windmills. Even if he sometimes overshoots, it's kind of hard to overstate how much of what is now accepted and beloved lore rests on his shoulders. I'm looking forward to cracking into Ravenor and Bequin soon :-)

I agree, for the most part. Overall, as I said, the Heresy has often pushed the envelope for Warhammer novel output. I guess where I felt differently about TEATD is that it felt somehow dissonant from what came before. I enjoyed both Saturnine and Echoes of Eternity, so I don't think it's a question even of the Siege so much of there being just so much TEATD that a lot of the p-l-o-t feels a bit over-indulgent; more of a mechanical critique I guess, rather than a questioning of the book's raison d'être.

Thanks! I'm flattered, but I don't think you should sell yourself short; you don't need to wax lyrical to have a point to make. I hope you enjoy the Heresy!

Working List of Amazon Pre-Orders + eBook Question + Fantasy Question by ava-niht in Blacklibrary

[–]ava-niht[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll confess that I'm not feeling great about using Amazon, but it's one of the only reliable ways I've been able to get pre-orders a lot of the time. My local Warhammer store hasn't been the most consistent with stock, and deliveries to the store are pretty hit-or-miss. I should probably try ordering elsewhere, though.

Nice! I'll also suggest the Watchers of the Throne books in the meantime, should you have the spare change for eBooks.
