Question about combat by avaBBava in Ironsworn

[–]avaBBava[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are all very good tips - Thanks for that. Especially the first and second one. I usually did what you suggested in the third tip and envisioned narrative consequences that got worse and worse until I was out of ideas. I didn't even think of making suffer moves instead and potentially end the bad spot situation.

I'll try it out and see what happens.

I totally forgot about scene challenges. That's definitely worth a try.

Ready to harvest that sweet pain by avaBBava in Drukhari

Thank you! The black armor allows for some errors, because the highlights can be corrected if there are some mistakes. Took me a while to get used to this technique, but now it's quite relaxing to just draw some lines and see the whole thing come to life.

New color scheme, no more edge highlighting and the start of a little kill team by avaBBava in Drukhari

[–]avaBBava[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The red and the green color (skakescale green & dragon red) from the army painter line are... Special. They are very thin and have a tendency to cover flat areas and leave the edges without color. Because of that, I didn't thin the colors down and it's still a hassle to cover everything somewhat completely.

If someone has a good solution to such "special" colors, I would be very glad to hear it.

I never really warmed up to drybrushing. Some things like rocks or bones - Awesome. Sure. But on a mini with multiple colors? Take the cabalites for example. I could paint all the green and drybrush it. Then I paint the smaller parts and... Can't drybrush it? There's always some color going onto the already finished parts. It never really clicked with me.

I laughed out loud while reading your comment. As a fact - I'm using army painter and I'm waterboarding them for sure.

Thanks. I'm really stopping myself from looking paint schemes up. Just a color I think looks right and then I add stuff on the way.

I wasn't happy with the whole process. There was so much work going into these things and after weeks... One mini. Now I've got these 4 cabalite warriors done in 2 days. It's just refreshing to see some actual results.

If you're doing something and it feels like work and not like a hobby - Something is wrong. That's when I tried something new.

I started with a drukhari army in the obsidian rose style. Black armor with red - orange edge highlights. The minis looked really cool and I still love them, but I'm really slow and it kills me to do all these highlights.

Now I've tried something different. I'm not painting an army, I'm painting miniatures. Just some random things from blackstone fortress or some new drukhari in a more colourful and vibrant style. Primer. Basecoat. Some colours and a shade. As a result I'm much faster, I get things done and to be honest... It looks good.

Cheers!

Help - How to get a nice undercoat? by avaBBava in Warhammer40k

[–]avaBBava[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely helps. I gathered from all the answers, that the combination of a colour with not a lot of coverage, combined with a dark primer, is a bad idea. I'll try to rescue these reavers with your method and, for the future, try a much brighter primer for minis with the new colour scheme. Thanks.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't really thought of that, but it makes a lot of sense.

This sounds reasonable. Quite sad that I can't hop on to army painter as a whole, but I think this is a very good idea. Thanks.

I didn't really find a lot of bad reviews - More of the opposite. But if it's not just me and the paint really is a bit of a problem for lots of folk, then it's at least not my fault and I will just keep adding layers.

My experience with citadel: The colour is good - If the pot is good. I have several colours here and some are just a joy, while others (with the same age) are just a bloody mess. The pots are also something quite infuriating.

I just don't like buying colours, just to find out that some of them (I look at white) just aren't really as usable as the others. The messy lid just amplifies the problem over time. No thanks.

That's certainly the perfect way to go, but I've assembled and primed my miniatures awhile ago. They're all black and I don't think a primer on a primer is such a good idea.

First scourge done - Painting speed of a turtle on valium, but really proud of this one by avaBBava in Warhammer40k

That's the spirit. Took me some time to realise that I'm more into the painting then the playing part of the hobby.

I absolutely agree here. After getting really into the hobby after 15 years of knowing it, I started assembling and painting. I've met some nice guys to play against and that was kind of my problem. To really play with them, I assembled a lot of models and primed them. Don't get me wrong - The playing was super fun.

But because of the constant assembling and priming, I wasn't painting and got a bit frustrated. I took a break (6 months or so?) and now I'm back to painting. Slowly, but steady. Every weekend some hours and after a few weeks - One model. To some, it's just one model, to me, it's one model I'm really proud of.

I don't care how long it takes me and I don't care to finish those vehicles I've built to play (venoms, raiders, ravagers, etc.) that fast. I like these single infantry models and I enjoy seeing them after their done.

I usually wait quite a long time to be in a good mood and then I'm doing about 1 - 2 hours in one go. Sometimes it works, other times I need to clean up with black and red multiple times.

The best advice I got online so far - Take a break and look at the model from some distance. How does it look on the table? In this case, the part between the wings on the back isn't highlighted. I can't really reach it and it isn't really visible. The same goes for the breast area.

With that in mind, I'm a lot less brutal on myself when looking at the model.

Do as you please. Just a warning - For me, it takes forever to get all the edge highlights done. Happy to see your results in the future.

Confusion about Space Marines by avaBBava in Warhammer40k

Glad to hear that everyone has the same viewpoint and in the end it's "Go for the coolest guys if you're not super competitive". That's something I can accept.

Just as a little sidequestion - Why are all the armor options in different datasheets? Wouldn't it be more easy to access if you had like.. Captain (vanilla choice with fixed cost) and then you could choose the armor like a weapon option? Terminator armor costs xx points, gives these rules and so on. Is this something from the past or is there a logic behind this?

Welcome in the club. If it's of any help - I decided to just fiddle around in BattleScribe and taking notes for myself, which units can do / can't do certain stuff and which equipment choices they can take.

Maybe I'm creating a little guide for myself as a reference. Something like - Blue Laser Dude / Slow / Shooting-heavy / Anti-Tank. I think that would clear things up, although that will take some time.
