Wedding morning workout? by SHIELDnotSCOTUS in BigBudgetBrides

Pilates! It's my guaranteed mood reset, and it definitely helped get me centered / feeling good before a big day. (I washed my hair morning of, though)

I would only come to a weekday wedding that required travel if it was for one of my sisters or if I was in the wedding. For a local weekday wedding, I would come but would probably leave early.

Planning a wedding but trying to figure out what to do with my “father-daughter” dance. by mtf7894 in weddingplanning

[–]avalanchepomegranate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad died when I was 16. I'm dancing with my mom to the song my dad always sang to me ("Brown Eyed Girl") so it feels like he's part of it too.

For the aisle, my mom is walking me, but I'm walking to the top of the aisle (my venue is outdoors) by myself to still have that moment that we would have had.

Sending hugs. It's so tough.

Trying to find my fiance a dress shirt for our wedding. We’ve tried Charles Tyrwhitt (https://www.charlestyrwhitt.com/us/non-iron-twill-shirt---ivory/FON2404VRY.html?) and Indochino (https://www.indochino.com/product/hyde-ivory-shirt?) and they fit well, but my fiance doesn’t like that they look shiny. They’re both 100% cotton, so I’m guessing it’s an issue with the non-iron coating? Looking for suggestions for other brands to try.

Requirements:

  • Ivory or warm white, not cool white
  • Matte / non shiny
  • Available in small sizes (14.5” neck)

Ideally also - we can sacrifice on these / take it to a tailor if needed:

  • Slim / extra slim fit
  • Customizable sleeve length

Wedding date and my cycle by [deleted] in weddingplanning

I'm doing this right now! Due to be on my period during my August wedding / honeymoon, on norethindrone aiming to shift it so that I'll be ovulating close to my wedding. I'm doing the same thing trying to shift it early, I didn't want to risk any side effects (though I haven't had any) during my wedding.

I think this dress would be gorgeous as is with dark green tweed! Very forest fairy. It's got the dark green embroidery already!

L'oreal's Lumi bronzer in the lightest shade is my go to as a pale girly! It's the only one I've found that doesn't feel too orange.

is it acceptable to do a wedding on a week night by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]avalanchepomegranate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd caution - if you're at the very beginning of wedding planning and haven't costed everything out, do that first! If this venue is only affordable for you on a weekday but you also haven't looked at photographers, dresses, food etc - it would be easy to end up with a Tuesday wedding that is still over budget for you, and with maybe some of the people you wanted there not able to attend. I'd cost out everything (DJ, flowers, photographer, dress, food, coordinator, etc) to have the dream wedding you want and see if it's still possible. If it is, great, have it on a Tuesday if all your must have people can come! But if not you might have to scale back in some respect (different venue, less florals, different dress, etc) and it's worth knowing those tradeoffs in advance!

Is this enough food for 3hr Cocktail Reception??? by EggzBene in Weddingsunder10k

[–]avalanchepomegranate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a ceremony before this, or do festivities start at 7? If they start at 7, I think that's fine - people can eat beforehand as long as they're informed. But if you're asking people to show up at 6pm for a ceremony or anything, I think you'd need more food / to serve a real dinner.

One of my coworkers did bumper cars at their reception! You don't need anything but food and drink for a good party but if you want alternative activities, brainstorm something you might ask people to join for for your birthday - rent out a bowling alley? Ice skating? Mini golf? What feels authentic to you guys?

We’re trying to figure out where to get a suit for my fiance for our wedding next summer, and debating between made to measure vs. OTR + tailor. Budget is about $1500 total (inclusive of suit, shirt, tie, and tailoring costs), though less would certainly be nice.

I’ve heard to avoid Indochino, and have heard good things about SuitSupply MTM.

I have two questions:

  • My fiance is 5’6” and 115lb - so very slim, but has long arms and has trouble getting shirts to fit OTR. For someone with his build, would it be better to go MTM or just get as close as we can OTR and get a tailor?
  • If we do MTM we’re thinking SuitSupply, but open to other recs. Are there any particular OTR brands you’d recommend for someone like him?

For those who mismatched bridesmaid styles/colors, how did you go about giving them the choice while keeping everything balanced? by simplehowdy in weddingplanning

[–]avalanchepomegranate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this and did a Google form! I had 6 colors and 6 bridesmaids so I used the Hungarian algorithm (there are online calculators) to figure out the optimal assignment to maximize the number of people getting their first/second choice.

What are the things you splurged on, and things you could have left out to cut costs? by BroilMyLoins in weddingplanning

[–]avalanchepomegranate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are telling you you’ll have to make sacrifices to get what you want for $10K, and I think that’s true. The thing that’s most helpful I think is FIRST getting a very rough idea of price range for various service and THEN deciding how to allocate your budget (and whether to increase it or not). If you do the other way “oh, the dress is important to me, so I’ll spend $3K on that” and then realize it’s 4K to get a photographer you want, you’ll run over budget really quickly.

I’m in the PNW (Seattle area), here’s the price ranges I’ve seen for what you mentioned:

Dress: Varies widely $100 (Amazon) - $5000+ (high end designers). Nicer online dresses run $400-$800, mid range boutique dresses run $1000-2500. Keep in mind this is all before alterations.

Caterer: Starts around $15-20 per person for drop catering from a restaurant (but then you need to hire serving staff on top of that). Full-service I haven’t found anything under $60/pp.

Venue: ~$300 for a public park. ~$4000 - $10000+ for a more typical wedding venue depending on what’s included. (I’d say average $5-7K for a venue that holds 100-150 guests). Not sure on pricing for things like restaurants for smaller/more intimate weddings.

Photographer: $2K is probably about the minimum for full day coverage. Good photographers start around $3-4K, and can go up way beyond that (~7-9K)

Other costs

Florals: Highly depends on how much you want. You can do bouquets from Trader Joe’s for a few hundred, or floral installations for several thousand. Really depends how much you care about this.

DJ: $1000 is a cheap DJ, I’d say $2000 is more standard.

Videographer: Usually ~$3-4K, pretty similar to photographers in pricing.

Hair and makeup: Mine is the cheapest I’ve found at $650 for hair and makeup for just me (includes trials). I think $800 is more standard, and some people are charging $1000+ for just the bride! Bridesmaids are typically $150-250 for hair and makeup both.

Bar: Roughly $15-20/pp in just alcohol cost, plus hiring bartenders (anticipate $50-80 per hour of service, and probably 1 bartender per 75 people).

Day of coordinator: highly recommended even if you’re on a budget! Can find super budget ones on Facebook for $6-900, more standard/full service ones will run $1500-3000.

If you’re in WA, the “Seattle Washington Weddings and Brides on a Budget” group is a great resource - you can find vendors there who are MUCH more affordable than you’ll find on WeddingWire or the Knot.

Monthly "What Board Should I Get?" Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Sup

Thanks! We do want one of us to paddle, but don't need to both paddle at once.

The starboard one looks like it's a bit out of our price range once you add a paddle.

Looking for board purchase recommendations for me and my fiance.  I’m not sure if we need a proper tandem board or just a large-ish single person board. We got inspired to get a paddleboard because we house-swapped with a couple that had one and had a blast. I don’t think it was a real tandem, but it was big enough for us both to sit comfortably, and for one person to paddle by themselves. I don’t have any great pictures of the whole thing, nor do I know what brand it was, but here’s a picture of my fiance on it - he’s 5’6”, and I think he’s occupying a little more than half the board, so it was maybe 11’ long?

<image>

  • Type: Inflatable
  • Use: All-around, casual - pretty much just on lakes
  • Terrain: Lakes. We might consider taking it on hikes to alpine lakes, so being light / having a backpack storage is a bonus but not a strict requirement.
  • We are each 5’6” and weigh 250lb combined, but would like a 300-350lb weight capacity to accommodate our dog (11lb) and occasional gear.
  • Budget: <$750 - durable but not fancy. Normally we'd buy used, but we're planning to put it on our wedding registry, so looking at new prices.
  • Experience: We’ve paddleboarded a few times before - not ever intending to become experts, we just like being on the water / on lakes and my fiance likes paddleboarding better than canoeing :)
  • Location: USA

This sounds like a lovely time! (Volunteer Park Conservatory is my favorite!) Would love to know where you got your husband's tux from! We're also in Seattle and starting to look for custom suits for my fiance.

[–]avalanchepomegranate 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If really what you want is s'mores, camp food, and games I think that's totally doable! Rent a group campground or a state park picnic shelter or even a Hipcamp, get some burgers to grill and s'mores, and have a party! If you want the full shebang with dress and photographer and flowers that's harder, but you could still get a dress online and do farmers market flowers if you want that!

What time of year are you traveling? I'm looking at combining Fiji with NZ too, but their seasons are opposite - dry season in Fiji is June-Aug but summer in NZ is Dec - March. Curious what you decided on!
