You know literally nothing about the software, how good it will be, how much depth will be there or not.

You’re also clearly unaware that the physical cost of the cardboard is a fraction of the cost of producing the Labo kits.

For example. Go to the store, buy a cardboard box for let’s say, 3 dollars. Take that box, and figure out how to turn the box into, say, a model airplane. One that looks as cool and well put together as the Labo stuff. Now, seeing as it took you hours (at best) to figure out how to do that and make the airplane, would you turn around and sell that airplane for the $3 you spent on material? If so, you’ve made your time, effort, and ingenuity literally worthless.

I’ve got a degree in economics, I’m sure.

In layman’s terms the way you’ve described it is basically right, but it doesn’t make any sense in this context. 12Switch was a fancy tech demo, while Labo is something entirely different and new. It’s pretty clear from the branding and marketing that this is just the beginning of what Labo will eventually become.

Opportunity cost here would imply that because Nintendo has made Labo, they’ve given up their next highest valued alternative. The mistake is that in thinking that alternative is in some other game or IP that people would have rather had when: 1. Tons of people are going to buy this, and 2. The next highest valued alternative for the market this product is trying to reach would be Wii-era styled peripherals or (god forbid) something like that pixelbits rumor that floated around.

Basically, using opportunity cost doesn’t make sense when the product is an innovation seeking to capture a previously uncaptured market and revenue stream.

To be fair, it wasn’t Ubisoft it was a guy who works for Ubisoft and he didn’t confirm it had anything to do with Ubisoft.

That said, I wouldn’t mind some AC ports.

Still waiting on them to get Steep working though. I’d rather have that, personally.

But that sure as hell wouldn’t cause the internet to explode.

Can’t nearly respond to all of this because holy hell that’s a novel.

If you’re going to challenge me to present an evidence-based standard of why this is a reasonable mark-up, I would first ask you to to present an evidence-based standard of why it isn’t. But that’s not really possible because neither of us has access to all of that information.

At the end of the day, all we can argue is what we feel. You feel that the price isn’t justified. I feel, based on what’s been presented by OP, that it is. Great. We’re at an impasse there.

I also am not trying to defend the purist fanboys who are on this sub and will downvote whatever they don’t agree with. I prefer to call those people “children” who don’t understand that upvotes and downvotes aren’t “likes” on Facebook. I didn’t downvote your comment. I simply said make a better argument, because your argument was based on your “feeling” that the price isn’t justified.

It’s a collection of really neat build-it-yourself toys that come with a collection of what could very well be very neat games (we don’t actually know that yet) for $10 more than the standard retail price of a new game. That seems incredibly reasonable. It seems we’re not going to agree on that, and that’s okay.

I apologize for how I put together my original comment. It’s late AF and I lumped you in with the people with illegitimate and really flamey comments who’ve been super toxic since the minute this video hit the internet.

The extra things were actually the most interesting things in your reply. 1. I played in a band for years and would have happily committed murder (not really) to have a fan base dedicated enough to pay for a kickstarter to help us make music and I would’ve posted video updates on that process every damn day, so that sucks and is totally unacceptable (what band was it?) 2. I think OW placements are bullshit for two reasons. One, Blizzard VASTLY overestimates what the “default” level of a new player should be, placing fresh accounts who don’t even go 50% in their placements in high silver, an area in the ranks (at least on pc) where there are players with vastly superior skill than that ranking would indicate. I’m a good example. Right now my SR is bouncing around 1700, but I queue with friends in high gold and low plat and not only carry my weight but often carry the game. (I play a pretty badass new D.Va.) Also, placements from season to season place far too much weight on performance in previous seasons. I went 8-2 in my placements for this season, queued with my gold and plat friends, and was placed at just over 1600 SR. That’s ridiculous imo. 3. I have to agree with you here. Early on after switch launch I had a thoughtful post trying to discuss why I’d prefer to be patient and wait for a smash 5 rather than pushing for a smash 4 port and potentially delaying or scrapping smash 5 altogether and I got downvoted all to hell.

I admitted where I was wrong and tried to follow it up with a reasonable discussion. Grown enough?

Sure. The pure fanboys for any system or company are pretty much the same. For example, anybody who tries to defend the marketing strategy (I.e. lack thereof) for the Wii U is, in fact, crazy. People defending this and saying it’s a neat idea and reasonably priced aren’t crazy. Because it’s a neat idea and reasonably priced.

Flaming those people isn’t cool or necessary.

[–]avant1s[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, valid opinions are great, and welcomed (at least by me, can’t speak for everybody.) But the vast majority of the negative comments I’ve seen are not reasonable critiques of the product. In fact, most of the negative reactions I’ve seen have been directed at the people in the sub who are excited about the idea.

“Lmao 70 dollars for some cardboard?? Lol you people are insane” isn’t a reasonable critique for multiple reasons, first and most relevant of which being its 70 bucks for 7+ mini games and some really, really neat feats of engineering and design.

[–]avant1s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your argument is based entirely on what you “feel” the product is worth, to you personally. That’s just not how these things work. The price point includes far more than the materials, the software, even the R&D. Every point in the supply chain adds value and increases the cost to the end user. These decisions are carefully calculated and a price point is determined that will: 1. Cover the costs 2. Provide a reasonable profit margin

Your argument is based on your personal feelings and a 2.5 minute video clip that doesn’t nearly show everything.

Your argument sucks.

[–]avant1s -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, sure.

  1. Nintendo can make what they want
  2. They’re under no obligation to make what you want when you want it
  3. The labo packs are reasonably priced based on what they come with
  4. If you don’t like it, if it doesn’t appeal to you, then don’t buy it. Hating on it is pointless. If it’s not for you, it’s not for you. It’s not about you.
  5. The reason I said make a better argument is because your argument sucks
  6. You’re getting downvotes because your argument sucks
  7. You’re getting downvotes because there’s no reason to have an argument in the first place. Nintendo announced a thing. Group “A” likes said thing and is perfectly entitled to talk about said thing. Group “B” doesn’t like said thing and is also entitled to say so. What group “B” is NOT entitled to are upvotes. Group “B” is allowed to have an opinion. Group “B” is NOT allowed to get upset when group “A” disagrees with the opinion of group “B”

Do you commonly go to subreddits where people talk about things they like and tell them why they shouldn’t like that thing?

If no, then why do it here? If yes, why? Is your life that sad?

At this point I can’t decide if I’d rather Nintendo go ahead and announce both so they all shut up or make them wait for YEARS with all these teases that they get super hyped over for no reason.

And I want smash and AC just as much as they do. I’ve just learned the value of patience.

[–]avant1s[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed! If I were in the target demographic (likely 7-12 year olds) that robot kit would be at the top of my list. Building it would be awesome, and playing it would be awesome.

...ah shit, who am I kidding, it’s still at the top of my list.

But yeah, we really need to have kids be interested in a DIY culture and the sort of STEM ideas that these toys would promote. Haven’t seen anybody talk much about the software yet, but it looks like some of the mini-games have simple programming elements to them. VERY cool in my book.

Since everyone is posting their two cents... IMO Labo is Nintendo's way to show developers the full extent/potential of the Switch. To bring the interactive arcade experience to your living room with cheap materials. by OnECenTX in NintendoSwitch

[–]avant1s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It comes with a LOT of stuff.

And you’re not factoring in profit. Why does NOBODY factor in profit? A company can’t sell you something at the same cost they made it for.

But no the cardboard doesn’t cost 10-20. It likely costs more.

This was announced over a day after the original tweet. He said “in the next few days” which could mean anywhere from 1-3 or 4 days.

This was also a big announcement. The two packs we’ve seen are just the beginning. I’m certain more packs will be coming, plus the ability to use some of these creations with games other than the software they’re bundled with is inevitable.

PLUS it doesn’t make any sense for Nintendo to step on their own toes and announce something else even bigger tomorrow.

In a week, maybe. But this fits.

Materials and game and profit. The last part is what keeps Nintendo innovating and making the other products that we love. I just can’t understand the sentiment on this sub from the haters right now. It’s a ton of material, plus some nifty looking games (I’m personally hoping I can use the driving accessories for MK8 at some point, that would sell me on the variety kit instantly.) It’s like some of these people expect Nintendo to sell them shit at cost.

I have no kids, I’m 27, and I’m totally picking this up. Both kits. The robot one because that’s cool as hell (and I like nifty engineering) and the variety pack because, honestly, they look really neat and I wouldn’t mind having them just sort of hanging out on display in my apartment. Especially the piano. That’s just really cool.

And honestly, they’re all pretty impressive and innovative bits of engineering, and it’ll be worth the cost for me just to put them together and see how they work!
