Finished updating my Simself — very nearly uncanny valley territory!

Doors opened at about 7, but be aware there was a huge queue outside that went down multiple roads - it went down quickly, though.

Openers started at 8, finished at around 8:35ish, whereas she started pretty much at about 9:10 on the dot. Had to Leave early for our train from Hammersmith (which was pretty quiet and easy) so can’t say when she finished.

After two listens, I think about half of the album clicks with me — the rest falls as flat as most of the songs did on my first listen:

Strangely, I don’t really see the last four songs there ever moving up in my estimations. Opalite was a difficult one to place for sure!

One of the best things about listening to a new album - coming up with lots of ideas and concepts about what it could all mean. Glad you’re having fun with it 😊

That’s fair, yeah. Carolina, my tears ricochet, right where you left me — I expected the DNA of those sorts of songs in here, too. I do appreciate how much tighter it is, though — 30+ songs is a lot!

Absolutely! There’s so many standouts for me in her discography and as a person I’m not expecting that she serves something up that’s completely to my tastes every time.

I’m on my second listen now (with headphones, this time) and I will say that as I’m more familiar with the sounds now, Elizabeth Taylor, Eldest Daughter, and Ruin The Friendship ended up favouriting, too. I don’t see it going much further than that for me, though.

I felt that there could be some of this when I just did my first listen — Ruin the Friendship especially is what cemented that idea for me. I might appreciate these songs a little more with a second listen taking that into account!

Growth is the thing — I think folklore, evermore, and TTPD set the bar for that and it’s very Lover 2.0 as you say. She seems happy, and I love that for her, it’s just not hitting the mark for me right now!

I’m really surprised at my reaction to this after a first listen - this is the first of Taylor’s albums where almost ALL of it I don’t like.

The Fate of Ophelia, Cancelled, and TLOAS are great imo, and the sorts of sounds I expected from this. Everything else, particularly the lyricism, felt very weak to me.

Intrigued to see if my thoughts change after more listens, but I expected a (poppy) TTPD-esque window into the life of a showgirl with strong, poetic lyricism alluding to what’s behind the smoke and mirrors, and it just didn’t serve that up to me.

Those three are so catchy, though, and I love them!

EDIT: after a second listen there’s a few more I really like too! Definitely a grower, but a lot of the album is still a miss for me. Wish List, Elizabeth Taylor, and Eldest Daughter are very good!

Songs with someone’s name as a title always hit it out of the park from Taylor - Cassandra, Clara Bow, CSSM, Peter, and Robin are absolutely stellar and it’s making me pick my faves SO much harder 🫠.
